Georgia Road Test: Maneuvers, Scoring, and Scheduling

To pass the Georgia road test, you need to score at least 75% on a skills exam that includes parallel parking, straight-line backing, a turnabout, and on-road driving evaluated by a Department of Driver Services examiner.1Georgia Department of Driver Services. Section 3 Continued DDS gives the exam at Customer Service Centers across the state, and also offers a virtual version run remotely through a dual-facing camera setup.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Test and Exams Information You bring your own vehicle, and it has to pass a quick safety check before the driving begins.

What to Bring on Test Day

You supply the car. DDS does not provide one. Before any driving starts, the examiner inspects the vehicle, and if it fails the inspection you’ll be sent home to reschedule. Bring a paper copy of the vehicle registration and a current, valid insurance card.3Georgia Department of Driver Services. Road Test Georgia law requires liability coverage on every registered vehicle, so testing in an uninsured car isn’t an option.4Justia Law. Georgia Code 33-34-4 – Owner Required to Provide Coverage

The safety inspection covers turn signals, brake lights, horn, tire tread, windshield wipers, and window visibility. Illegal tint or cracked glass that blocks the examiner’s view will fail the check.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Test and Exams Information

A rental car works, but your name must be on the rental agreement.3Georgia Department of Driver Services. Road Test If you bought the vehicle within the last 30 days and it still has temporary tags, bring the bill of sale. The road test is given only in English, so instructions will be delivered in English regardless of the language you used for the written exam.

Arrive at least 15 minutes early. If you’re under 18, a licensed driver aged 21 or older has to come with you, and only you and that driver may be in the vehicle during the test.3Georgia Department of Driver Services. Road Test

The Maneuvers You’ll Perform

Three controlled maneuvers happen before you leave the parking area. These catch more test-takers off guard than the on-road portion because the measurements are specific and the examiner is looking for exact technique.

Parallel Parking

You’ll park midway between two standards (poles or cones) in a space measuring 22 feet long by 10 feet deep. The car has to end up no more than 18 inches from the curb.1Georgia Department of Driver Services. Section 3 Continued Touching the curb or the standards costs points. Practice in a space that exact size. Most people overestimate how much room they’ll actually have.

Straight-Line Backing

You’ll back the car roughly 50 feet at no more than 10 miles per hour, keeping it straight and smooth. Physically turn your head and look behind the vehicle the whole time. The examiner is watching your head position, not just your steering.1Georgia Department of Driver Services. Section 3 Continued

Turnabout

The turnabout asks you to reverse direction in a narrow space using a three-point turn.1Georgia Department of Driver Services. Section 3 Continued Control and spatial awareness are what the examiner is watching; rushing it or misjudging the space is a common place to lose points.

On-Road Driving

Once the controlled maneuvers are done, you’ll drive on public roads while the examiner evaluates how you handle intersections, obey traffic signals and signs, hold your lane, and use turn signals. Points come off for rolling through a stop sign, stopping past the white line, missing a mirror check before a lane change, or hesitating enough to disrupt traffic flow. The examiner wants to see confident, safe driving and solid habits, not perfection.

On backup cameras and parking sensors: DDS has no published statewide ban, but the expectation is that you demonstrate traditional safety checks. During the backing maneuver, turn your head and look behind you. Relying on a screen instead of turning around will cost you points regardless of whether the camera is covered.

How Scoring Works

Seventy-five percent is passing.1Georgia Department of Driver Services. Section 3 Continued Points are deducted for each error, with different errors weighted differently. A single missed signal won’t fail you, but repeated small mistakes add up quickly.

Some actions end the test on the spot. Causing an accident or committing a traffic violation, whether or not you’re actually ticketed, results in automatic failure and a mandatory 30-day wait before you can retest.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Test and Exams Information The examiner can also stop the test early for unsafe actions or failure to follow instructions.

What You Need Before You Can Schedule

Both teens and adults have to pass the written knowledge exam and hold a valid Georgia learner’s permit before taking the road test. From there, the prerequisites split sharply by age.

If you’re 16 or 17, you’re applying for a Class D provisional license, and you must hold a valid Class CP learner’s permit for at least one year and one day before applying.5Georgia Department of Driver Services. How Do I Class D During that year you cannot have any serious traffic convictions, including DUI, hit-and-run, racing, reckless driving, or any offense carrying four or more points.6Justia Law. Georgia Code 40-5-24 – Instruction Permits Georgia’s Joshua’s Law also requires 30 hours of classroom or online driver education and 40 hours of supervised driving, 6 of them at night.7Georgia Department of Driver Services. Joshua’s Law Requirements Minors must complete the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program (ADAP), either in school or through the online eADAP version,8Georgia Department of Driver Services. ADAP Regulated Programs and bring a notarized Certificate of School Enrollment (Form DDS-1).9Georgia Department of Driver Services. School Enrollment Documents A parent or guardian must be present at the appointment and attest in writing that the supervised driving hours were completed.

If you’re 18 or older and have never been licensed in Georgia or any other state, you need a valid Georgia non-commercial learner’s permit, but there’s no mandatory holding period. You sign an affidavit confirming 40 hours of supervised road driving, including 6 at night, before the skills test.3Georgia Department of Driver Services. Road Test The 30-hour driver education course and ADAP are not required for adults.10Georgia.gov. Apply for a Georgia Drivers License (Class C) If you’re transferring from an out-of-state license, you’ll surrender it to DDS.

The license application itself is submitted online through DDS Online Services or the DDS 2 Go mobile app; there is no paper application at the service center.11Georgia Department of Driver Services. DDS Forms You still bring physical documents to the appointment to verify identity, Social Security number, and Georgia residency, and for a REAL ID-compliant license (the one with the gold or black star), you’ll need original or certified copies in each of those categories.12Georgia Department of Driver Services. Scheduling, and the Virtual Option

Road test appointments are required. There are no walk-ins. Book through the DDS online appointment system or the DDS 2 Go app, both of which show real-time availability at centers around the state.13Georgia Department of Driver Services. Appointments You’ll need your permit number. Slots fill quickly, so book several weeks ahead, especially in summer when teen applicants flood the system.

Georgia also offers a virtual road test as an alternative to the in-person exam. It’s conducted remotely with a dual-facing camera and a hands-free device while a licensed adult aged 21 or older rides along.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Test and Exams Information DDS reports a high pass rate and positive feedback from both customers and examiners.3Georgia Department of Driver Services. Road Test It’s worth considering if your nearest center has long wait times.

Certified driving schools can also administer the test through Georgia’s Third Party Testing Program, which can mean shorter waits and the convenience of testing where you trained.14Georgia Department of Driver Services. Third Party Testing Fees vary by school and are separate from the DDS license fee.

If You Fail

The waiting periods are shorter than most people assume. After a first failure, you can retest the next day. After a second failure, you wait seven days.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Test and Exams Information The exception is a test that ended because of an accident or traffic violation, which triggers the 30-day wait regardless of how many attempts you’ve had.

Ask the examiner which areas cost you the most points. They’ll tell you. Most people who fail lose it on the controlled maneuvers, and parallel parking in particular, rather than on the on-road portion.

Restrictions After You Pass (Under 18)

Passing the road test at 16 or 17 doesn’t mean unrestricted driving. A Class D license comes with graduated restrictions that ease over the first year:5Georgia Department of Driver Services. How Do I Class D

  • No driving between midnight and 5:00 a.m., with no exceptions.
  • For the first six months, only immediate family members may ride as passengers.
  • From months seven through twelve, one non-family passenger under 21 is allowed.
  • After one year, up to three non-family passengers under 21 are allowed.

These passenger limits apply to non-family only. Parents, siblings, and other immediate family can ride with you from day one. At 18, you become eligible for a full Class C license without the passenger and curfew limits.
