To qualify for Georgia SNAP, your household’s gross monthly income generally must sit at or below 130% of the federal poverty level, which works out to $1,696 for one person and $3,483 for a family of four in fiscal year 2026. You also need to live in Georgia, meet citizenship or qualified immigration status rules, and comply with work requirements if you are between 16 and 59 and able to work. Thanks to Georgia’s categorical eligibility rules, most households never have to worry about an asset test.
Income Limits for Fiscal Year 2026
Federal rules set two income tests. Gross income is everything your household brings in before deductions, and it must fall at or below 130% of the federal poverty level. Net income is what remains after allowable deductions, and it must fall at or below 100% of the poverty level.1eCFR. 7 CFR 273.9 – Income and Deductions Most Georgia households must pass both. If your household includes someone age 60 or older or a person with a disability, only the net income test applies.

| Household Size | Gross Monthly Limit (130% FPL) | Net Monthly Limit (100% FPL) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | $1,696 | $1,305 |
| 2 | $2,292 | $1,763 |
| 3 | $2,888 | $2,221 |
| 4 | $3,483 | $2,680 |
| 5 | $4,079 | $3,138 |
| 6 | $4,675 | $3,596 |
| 7 | $5,271 | $4,055 |

Count every person who normally lives with you and buys and prepares food together as part of the same household. Spouses living together are always one household, and children under 22 living with a parent generally count with the parent even if they cook separately. An elderly or disabled person who cannot prepare meals due to a permanent physical limitation can sometimes be treated as a separate household, which often means lower countable income and a better chance of qualifying.
Deductions That Lower Countable Income
If your gross income is close to or just above the limit, the deductions used to figure net income can decide whether you qualify. Report everything that applies:
- A standard deduction of $209 per month for households of one to three people, with higher amounts for larger households.3Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Eligibility
- 20% of earned income (wages and salary).
- Dependent care costs paid so a household member can work, train, or attend school.
- Shelter costs, including rent or mortgage, utilities, and property taxes, to the extent they exceed half your income after other deductions. A cap applies unless the household includes an elderly or disabled member.
- Out-of-pocket medical expenses above $35 per month for elderly or disabled household members, including prescriptions, doctor visits, dental care, insurance premiums, and transportation to medical appointments.4Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Special Rules for the Elderly or Disabled
Plenty of households that look over the gross limit at first glance qualify once deductions pull net income down. Document everything.
Assets Rarely Matter
Georgia uses a form of categorical eligibility tied to its TANF Community Outreach Services program. Households with income at or below 130% of the federal poverty level are categorically eligible, which means bank accounts, vehicles, and property are not counted. If every adult in the household is elderly or disabled, that threshold rises to 200% of the poverty level.5Division of Family and Children Services. Georgia SNAP Policy Manual – 3210 Categorical Eligibility
The federal asset test only comes into play for the narrow set of households that fall outside categorical eligibility, usually because of a specific program violation. When it does apply, FY2025 limits are $3,250 for most households and $5,000 for households with an elderly or disabled member; these amounts adjust each October.1eCFR. 7 CFR 273.9 – Income and Deductions
Residency and Citizenship
You must live in Georgia and be able to prove it with something like a utility bill, lease, or mortgage statement. You also need to be a U.S. citizen, a lawful permanent resident, a Cuban or Haitian entrant, or a citizen of a Compact of Free Association nation (Micronesia, Marshall Islands, or Palau).6Division of Family and Children Services. Georgia SNAP Policy Manual – 3320 Citizenship and Alien Status Some lawful permanent residents must have held that status for five years before they qualify, with exceptions for refugees and asylees. Every person seeking benefits must provide a Social Security number or apply for one.
Work Requirements
If you are between 16 and 59 and able to work, you must register for work, accept a suitable job if offered, and avoid quitting a job or dropping below 30 hours a week without good cause. You may also be referred to a SNAP Employment and Training program. You are exempt if you already work at least 30 hours a week, care for a child under six or an incapacitated person, attend school at least half-time, or cannot work because of a physical or mental condition.7Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Work Requirements
A failure to comply without good cause disqualifies you for at least one month the first time, three months the second, and six months the third. Georgia can extend those minimums or impose a permanent disqualification after a third violation.8eCFR. 7 CFR 273.7 – Work Provisions
The ABAWD Time Limit
A stricter rule hits Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents. Georgia defines an ABAWD as someone 18 to 65 who is physically and mentally fit, has no dependents, and is not otherwise exempt. In that category, you can get SNAP for only three months out of any 36-month period unless you meet the ABAWD work requirement.9Division of Family and Children Services. Georgia SNAP Policy Manual – 3355 ABAWD Requirements
Meeting the requirement means working at least 80 hours a month, participating in a qualifying training program for at least 80 hours a month, or combining the two to hit 80. The time limit does not apply if you are pregnant, a veteran, experiencing homelessness, living with a household member under 18, or a former foster youth who aged out of care at 18.7Food and Nutrition Service. College Student Rules
Students enrolled at least half-time in a college, university, or vocational program that requires a high school diploma are ineligible unless they meet one of these exemptions:10eCFR. 7 CFR 273.5 – Students
- Working at least 20 hours a week, or earning the federal minimum wage multiplied by 20 hours weekly
- Participating in federal or state work-study approved for the current term
- Caring for a child under 6, or a child under 12 when adequate child care is unavailable
- Receiving TANF benefits
- Being a single parent enrolled full-time with a dependent child under 12
- Having a physical or mental condition that prevents employment
- Being under 18 or 50 or older
Students enrolled less than half-time are evaluated like any other applicant. Students who receive most of their meals from an institutional meal plan cannot get SNAP.11Federal Student Aid. SNAP Benefits for Eligible Students
