The gold star on a Florida license is the visual marker that the credential is compliant with the federal Real ID Act. Since May 7, 2025, you need that star (or another federally accepted ID like a U.S. passport) to board a domestic flight or enter a secure federal building.1Transportation Security Administration. TSA Begins REAL ID Full Enforcement on May 7 Florida has issued Real ID credentials since January 4, 2010, but plenty of residents still carry older cards without the star.2Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. What the Gold Star Means
The star confirms that Florida verified your identity, legal presence, and Social Security number before issuing the card, which is what federal agencies require under the Real ID Act.3Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID A Florida license without the star is not fake or invalid. It still works for driving, buying age-restricted products, and other state-level purposes. It just won’t get you past a federal checkpoint.
When You Actually Need It
TSA security lines are the everyday place people run into the requirement. As of May 7, 2025, a non-compliant Florida license alone won’t get you through a checkpoint; expect delays, extra screening, or being turned away if you have no backup ID.1Transportation Security Administration. TSA Begins REAL ID Full Enforcement on May 7
Beyond airports, Real ID-compliant identification is required to enter certain federal facilities, military installations, and nuclear power plants regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.4Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID Frequently Asked Questions If a federal agency controls access to a location, it can demand a Real ID.
One boundary worth knowing: TSA does not require identification for passengers under 18 on domestic flights, so a child traveling with a parent or guardian does not need a gold star or any other ID at the checkpoint.5Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint Airlines set their own rules for unaccompanied minors.
Documents You Need to Get the Star
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) will only add the gold star when you produce originals or certified copies proving three things: your identity, your Social Security number, and your Florida residential address.6Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. What to Bring Photocopies are rejected at the counter.
Proof of Identity and Legal Presence
You need one primary document. For U.S. citizens, that usually means an original or certified U.S. birth certificate, a valid unexpired U.S. passport, a Certificate of Naturalization, or a Certificate of Citizenship.2Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. REAL ID If your current name doesn’t match the name on that document, bring every marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order that traces the change from your birth name to today.6Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. What to Bring
Proof of Social Security Number
An original Social Security card is the simplest option. FLHSMV also accepts other documents that show your full SSN; the full list is on the agency’s website.2Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. REAL ID
Proof of Florida Residential Address
You need two separate documents showing your principal residential address in Florida. A utility bill, a deed, a mortgage statement, or a bank statement will typically do. A P.O. box does not count; the requirement is a physical residential address.
How to Get the Gold Star
Your first Real ID-compliant credential requires an in-person visit to an FLHSMV driver license service center or an authorized county tax collector’s office.2Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. REAL ID There is no way around this for the initial issuance. Staff will review and scan your originals, verify the information against federal databases, and take your old license or out-of-state credential.
The fee for an original or renewal Class E driver’s license is $48. A county tax collector’s office adds a $6.25 service fee; veterans who have previously provided evidence of veteran status are exempt from that surcharge.7Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Fees There is no separate charge for making the license Real ID-compliant. If you bring the right documents, the star comes standard.
Your card with the gold star is mailed to your residential address. You leave the office with a temporary paper license, and this is where people get tripped up: that paper is not accepted at TSA checkpoints.5Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint If you have a flight during the wait, bring your passport.
Renewing Once You Have the Star
After you have a Real ID-compliant credential, most renewals and replacements can be done through the FLHSMV’s MyDMV Portal. There is a catch built into that system: since January 2, 2020, only customers who are already Real ID-compliant can renew or replace online. If your current Florida license has no gold star, the portal will not let you renew there, and you’ll need to go into an office.2Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. REAL ID
Some changes still require an office visit even for compliant cardholders, including a legal name change. A replacement card costs $25, plus the $6.25 tax collector surcharge where applicable.7Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Fees
Non-Citizens and Limited-Term Cards
Non-U.S. citizens with lawful status can also obtain a gold star credential in Florida, but the supporting documents and the card itself work differently. Permanent residents generally present their Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551). People in temporary lawful status, such as those with a valid nonimmigrant visa, a pending asylum application, or approved temporary protected status, present documentation matching their immigration category, and the state verifies non-citizen documents through the federal SAVE database.4Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID Frequently Asked Questions
Federal regulations require that a Real ID card issued to someone with temporary lawful status clearly indicate on its face that it is temporary or limited-term. Those cards carry the gold star but are valid only for the duration of the person’s authorized stay, not the standard eight-year term.8eCFR. Part 37 Real ID Driver’s Licenses and Identification Cards
If You’d Rather Skip the Gold Star
You don’t strictly need a Real ID-compliant Florida license if you already carry another federally accepted ID. TSA accepts a range of documents at the checkpoint, including:
- U.S. passport or U.S. passport card
- Department of Defense military ID, including dependent IDs
- Permanent resident card
- DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
- Federally recognized tribal ID
- Transportation Worker Identification Credential
- Veteran Health Identification Card
Any of these clears a TSA checkpoint without a compliant license.5Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint A passport card is a common workaround for people who only fly domestically: it fits in a wallet and costs less than a passport book.
Starting February 1, 2026, travelers who arrive at a checkpoint with no acceptable ID at all have one more option. TSA’s ConfirmID program lets you pay a $45 fee to go through an alternative identity verification and still board.9Transportation Security Administration. $45 Fee Option for Air Travelers Without a REAL ID Begins February 1 Everyone who uses it faces additional screening and potential delays. Treat it as a last resort, not a plan.
