Guido Reichstadter: Five-Day D.C. Bridge Protest and Charges

Guido Reichstadter is a 45-year-old Marine veteran and anti-AI activist who, in May 2026, spent five days camped on the 168-foot steel arch of the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge in Washington, D.C., in protest against the U.S. war in Iran and the unchecked development of artificial intelligence.1The New York Times. The May 2026 climb was not his first on that bridge. In 2022 he scaled the same arch for 28 hours to protest the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, setting off green smoke bombs during the standoff.5NBC Washington. Protester Scales Frederick Douglass Bridge Sparking Shutdown

In 2024, he co-founded Stop AI with Sam Kirchner. The group, initially based out of a shared house in West Oakland, calls on the government to halt artificial intelligence development, which members describe as a “suicide race” toward human extinction.6KQED. OpenAI Critic Arrested for SF Protest Ahead of Activist Groups Criminal Trial Between October 2024 and February 2025, Stop AI staged repeated protests at OpenAI’s San Francisco headquarters. In February 2025, members chained the company’s front doors shut and sat in front of them until police removed them; Reichstadter was charged with trespassing and other misdemeanors, and was jailed again in December 2025 for violating a court order barring him from OpenAI’s premises. Around September 2, 2025, he began a hunger strike outside Anthropic’s San Francisco office that lasted at least eight days.7SFGate. San Francisco Anthropic Hunger Strike

The Five-Day Bridge Protest

On the afternoon of Friday, May 1, 2026, Reichstadter scaled one of the bridge’s steel arches, unfurled a black banner he said symbolized mourning for civilian casualties in Iran, and pitched a small tent.5NBC Washington. For five days he posted updates and demands on X while inbound and outbound lanes stayed blocked and traffic delays stretched toward the Maryland state line.10Fox Baltimore. He descended on the morning of Wednesday, May 6, as rain began to fall and high winds picked up. He later said he had run out of water days earlier. Metropolitan Police took him into custody immediately, transported him to a hospital for medical evaluation, and then jailed him for a day.12NewsNation. Why He Did It

Reichstadter described the protest as driven by two linked concerns: the U.S. war in Iran and the dangers of unregulated AI. He said he was “outraged by the civilian casualties” and called on Americans to “nonviolently withdraw our support, our cooperation, from the system, from the regime, which is prosecuting these acts of murder in our name.”4Democracy Now. Guido Reichstadter Bridge Iran War Protest He framed AI as the connection, pointing to reports that AI systems had been used to pick targets in U.S. strikes on Iran.

Those reports had a factual basis. The Pentagon confirmed it used the Maven Smart System, an AI-powered targeting program produced by Palantir Technologies, during Operation Epic Fury, which began on February 28, 2026.13Arms Control Association. AI Plays Major Role War Iran A February 28 strike on the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls’ school in Minab, Iran, killed more than 170 people, many of them children; a preliminary Central Command assessment found the school had been added to an AI-generated target list without adequate human review because intelligence maps had not been updated to reflect its conversion from a former military base to a civilian school.

From the arch, Reichstadter warned of a “point of no return” in AI development, citing risks of “catastrophic harm” and “potentially human extinction.”12NewsNation. The Charges He Faces

After his arrest on May 6, D.C. police charged Reichstadter with three offenses:

He also reported facing a federal unlawful entry charge.16NBC Washington. He also had outstanding warrants in San Francisco from the Stop AI protests at OpenAI. He was unable to appear at a scheduled San Francisco court date on May 5 because he was still on the bridge, and as of mid-May 2026 he planned to travel to California to address those cases.

What He Plans Next

In a post-protest interview with the Washingtonian, Reichstadter said he intended to relocate permanently to the Washington, D.C., area to focus on community organizing and activism. He acknowledged the possibility of jail time but wrote on X that he hoped the protest would serve “as fuel for greater commitment and action in the cause of peace and in the fight for our future.”17KCRA.
