How the 10% Breaks Down
The combined 10% rate applies to tangible goods sold at retail and to admissions and participation fees at amusement and entertainment venues.1City of Gulf Shores Alabama. - State of Alabama: 4%
- Baldwin County: 3%
- City of Gulf Shores: 3%
If a business sits in the city’s police jurisdiction rather than inside the corporate limits, the city portion drops to 1.5% and the total becomes 8.5%. The state and county shares are unchanged. The line between the two zones matters at the edges of town, so confirm the exact location with the city Revenue Department before collecting.1City of Gulf Shores Alabama. Sales Tax

Lodging Is Taxed Separately
Hotels, motels, condos, and short-term vacation rentals in the corporate limits carry a combined 16% lodging tax: 4% state, 2% county, and 10% city. In the police jurisdiction the city share is 5%, for a total of 11%.5City of Gulf Shores Alabama. Lodging Tax
Stays of 180 continuous days or more at the same property are exempt from state, county, and municipal lodging tax, because at that point the occupant is no longer treated as a transient under Alabama law.6Alabama Administrative Code. Alabama Administrative Code – Persons, Firms, And Corporations Subject To Lodgings Tax The exemption requires an uninterrupted stay at one location, so property managers need to track durations carefully.
What Isn’t Taxed
Professional services are generally not subject to Alabama sales tax. Consulting, accounting, legal advice, and similar work without a tangible product usually fall outside the tax, though the picture changes when services are bundled with goods or involve fabricating a new product.
Wholesale purchases for resale are exempt. A buyer with a valid Alabama sales tax license can present it so inventory isn’t taxed twice.7Alabama Administrative Code. When to File
Returns are due by the 20th of the month after the reporting period.11Alabama Department of Revenue. When Is the Sales Tax Due Monthly filing is the default. Less frequent filing is available on request:
- Quarterly, if the preceding calendar year’s liability was under $2,400
- Semi-annual, if liability was under $1,200, or sales occurred in two or fewer 30-day periods
- Annual, if liability was under $600, or sales occurred in one 30-day period or less
The reduced frequency is not automatic. You have to request it from the Department of Revenue.12Alabama Department of Revenue. Sales Tax All filings go through My Alabama Taxes, which accepts ACH debit directly.13Alabama Department of Revenue. E-Filing, Payments and Assistance
The Discount for Filing on Time
Alabama lets on-time filers keep a slice of the tax collected: 5% of the first $100 in tax due, plus 2% of everything above that, capped at $400 per month.14Alabama Department of Revenue. Is the Seller Allowed a Discount for Timely Filing and Paying the Sales Tax Due The discount disappears entirely if the filing is a single day late.
Penalties and Interest for Late Payments
Two penalties can apply at once. The failure-to-pay penalty is 10% of the tax not paid by the due date. If the balance remains unpaid 30 days after a Notice and Demand from the Department of Revenue, a second 10% penalty attaches.15Alabama Administrative Code. Alabama Administrative Code – Penalty For Failure To Timely Pay Tax
The failure-to-file penalty is separate. It equals the greater of 10% of any additional tax due or $50, and the $50 minimum applies even when nothing is owed for the period. Remote Sellers and the SSUT Program
Out-of-state sellers do not need to compute Gulf Shores’ specific rates. Alabama’s Simplified Sellers Use Tax program lets accepted remote sellers collect a flat 8% on all sales into Alabama. Sellers have to apply and be accepted before collecting at the flat rate.18Alabama Department of Revenue. Simplified Sellers Use Tax (SSUT)
The obligation starts once a remote seller or marketplace facilitator passes $250,000 in retail sales into Alabama. At that point the seller either joins SSUT or complies with Alabama’s reporting and customer-notification rules. Wholesale sales for resale and sales handled by a participating marketplace do not count toward the threshold.18Alabama Department of Revenue. Simplified Sellers Use Tax (SSUT)
Consumer Use Tax on Untaxed Purchases
If you buy from an out-of-state seller that didn’t collect Alabama tax, you owe consumer use tax on the purchase. The rate mirrors the sales tax: 4% at the state level for general goods, 2% for vehicles, and 1.5% for farm equipment and manufacturing machinery.19Alabama Department of Revenue.
