Checking Whether Someone Is in Custody

Before calling, try the online inmate search on the Sheriff’s Office website under Justice Center Services. It returns current inmates by name, usually with booking date, charges, and bond amount.2Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. Justice Center Inmate Search The database can lag new bookings by several hours, so if someone was just arrested and isn’t showing up, call Intake at 513-946-6139.

Phone Calls From the Jail

You cannot call the jail and ask to be connected to a specific inmate. Calls are inmate-initiated. When one comes through, you’ll hear an automated greeting that identifies the caller and the facility and prompts you to press a key to accept. A different key typically lets you block your number from future calls.

For the call to connect, your phone number needs to be on the inmate’s list and funds generally need to be available in the account linked to your number, unless your carrier accepts collect charges. Setting the account up before the first call avoids missed connections.

Standard calls are usually capped around 15 minutes so others in the housing unit get a turn. Three-way calling and call forwarding are blocked and will trigger an automatic disconnection; the system detects the line change almost immediately.

What Calls Cost

Federal rate caps now limit what jail phone providers can charge. Under rules implementing the Martha Wright-Reed Act, a jail with an average daily population of 1,000 or more — which includes Hamilton County — is capped at $0.08 per minute for audio calls and $0.17 per minute for video calls. Providers can add up to $0.02 per minute for facility-related costs.3Federal Register. Monitoring and Privacy

Assume every non-legal call is recorded. The automated greeting at the start of each call is the facility’s notice. Anything said during the call can be reviewed by law enforcement and prosecutors.

Attorney-client calls are privileged and are not supposed to be monitored, but the inmate normally has to have the attorney’s number registered as a legal line to trigger that protection. If the number isn’t flagged, the call may be recorded by default.

Visits: Remote and On-Site

The Justice Center uses HomeWAV for video visits and voice calls. You create an account on homewav.com or through the HomeWAV mobile app. Registration requires a clear profile photo without social media filters, a photo of a valid government-issued ID, and your date of birth and ID expiration date. Once approved, you get a notification when the inmate logs into a HomeWAV kiosk or tablet, and you start the call from your end.4Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. Phone Visitations

Remote visitation hours are Monday through Saturday, 9:00 AM to 8:40 PM, and Sunday, 11:00 AM to 8:40 PM. The inmate must be more than 30 days from their release date. You can’t visit if you have an active warrant or a protection order outstanding against you. No more than four visitors at once, and minors need an adult present. Breaking a rule during a visit can end the call with no credit and lead to a ban on future visits.4Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. Phone Visitations

On-site visits run Monday through Friday, 11:00 AM to 6:30 PM, and are closed on holidays. They are coordinated through HomeWAV as well, with the same ID and conduct rules.4Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. Phone Visitations

Putting Money on an Inmate’s Account

Kiosks in the lobbies of the North and South buildings at the Justice Center accept cash deposits for an inmate’s commissary account, typically posting immediately.5Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. Commissary If you can’t visit in person, HomeWAV, the current phone and visitation provider, is the place to check for online deposit options; those methods can change when the facility switches vendors.

You’ll need the inmate’s full legal name and booking or identification number. Misdirected deposits are difficult to reverse, so verify details before confirming. If you need to confirm an ID number, the online inmate search or a call to Records at 513-946-6309 will get it.1Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. Contact Us
