At the 2025 county rate of 6.869 mills, the county portion on an $80,000 assessed value works out to roughly $550.1Haralson County Board of Commissioners. Before bills go out, every owner receives an assessment notice listing the current fair market value and the 40% assessed value. If the number went up, that notice is where any appeal starts.

Once filed, the board has up to 180 days to review. If they agree, they issue a corrected notice. If they do not, your appeal moves to the forum you chose when you filed:

  • Board of Equalization, which hears disputes over value, taxability, and uniformity. The board schedules a hearing within 15 days of receiving the appeal and holds it within 20 to 30 days of notifying you, with a decision at the end of the hearing.6Justia. Once an account is delinquent, the Tax Commissioner can issue a tax lien, called a fi. fa. in Georgia (short for fieri facias). For real property, the county must give the owner 30 days’ notice before filing. The lien is a legal claim against the property that eventually authorizes seizure and sale.

If the debt still is not paid, the county advertises the property for sale in the local newspaper for four consecutive weeks and then conducts a tax sale, with an opening bid equal to the taxes owed plus costs. A tax sale purchase does not transfer ownership right away. Georgia law gives the original owner 12 months to redeem the property.10Justia.
