To renew a Hawaii driver’s license, gather your identity and residency documents, complete the State of Hawaii Driver’s License Application, and submit it at your county licensing center. Eligible drivers can now also renew online or by mail. The fee runs $10 to $40 depending on how long your new license will last, and the permanent card arrives by mail about six to eight weeks after your appointment.
Licensing is handled county by county on Oahu, Maui, the Big Island, and Kauai, so appointment systems and office hours differ, but the underlying rules come from state statute and the paperwork is the same everywhere.
When You Can Renew
You can renew as early as six months before your license expires.1County of Maui. Fees and How Long the New License Lasts

- Ages 25 through 71: eight-year license, $40.
- Ages 18 through 24: four-year license, $20.
- Ages 72 through 79: four-year license, $20, under the Kupuna Driver’s License extension that took effect January 1, 2023.
- Age 80 and older: two-year license, $10.
Before 2023, drivers aged 72 to 79 were limited to a two-year license; the Kupuna extension doubled that to four years.6Hawaii County, HI Vehicle Registration & Licensing. Documents to Bring
If you have not previously submitted REAL ID-compliant documents since May 1, 2014, you need originals or certified copies at your renewal appointment. Even if you submitted them before, confirm with your county office that they are still on file.
Proof of Legal Name, Date of Birth, and Legal Presence
One document that proves all three. Common choices are an unexpired U.S. passport, a birth certificate with a raised seal from a U.S. state or territory, or a Certificate of Naturalization. Social Security Number
Bring your original Social Security card, a W-2 showing your full SSN, or a Social Security Administration statement. Photocopies and notarized copies are not accepted.7Hawaii Department of Transportation. Two Proofs of Hawaii Residency
You need two documents from different sources showing your name and physical Hawaii address, each no more than two months old. Utility bills (electric, water, cable), bank or credit card statements, and residential rental agreements of six months or longer all qualify. Make sure the name and address on your residency documents match exactly what you write on the application. Mismatches are one of the most common reasons a clerk sends people home.
Completing the Application Form
The form is titled “State of Hawaii Driver’s License Application.” You can download and print it from the Hawaii Department of Transportation website or pick up a paper copy at any county licensing center or Satellite City Hall. The application asks for your full legal name, date of birth, residential address, and Social Security Number. A section on medical conditions that could affect safe driving must be answered honestly, because the examiner can issue a shorter-term license if a condition warrants it.4Justia. Renewing in Person
Most renewals require an in-person visit. On Oahu, you schedule through the AlohaQ system at a Driver Licensing Center or select Satellite City Hall, and Honolulu offers Saturday renewal appointments for licenses expiring within six months.10City and County of Honolulu. At the counter, the clerk reviews your completed application and original documents. You then complete a vision screening and fingerprinting.8Department of Customer Services. Once your documents are approved and you have paid the fee, the clerk issues a temporary paper permit you can use immediately. The permanent plastic card, with the REAL ID gold star if you provided compliant documents, arrives at your mailing address within about six to eight weeks.12Department of Customer Services. Renewing Online or by Mail
As of July 1, 2025, Hawaii law allows eligible drivers to renew online or by mail, rather than by mail only as before.13Justia. Hawaii Code 286-107 – License Renewals, Procedures and Requirements To qualify, all of the following must be true:
- No more than two consecutive remote renewals. After two in a row, the next one must be in person.
- No more than 16 years since your last in-person visit. This cap does not apply to active-duty military members or their immediate families stationed outside Hawaii on official orders.
- You are not otherwise disqualified. A suspended or revoked license cannot be renewed remotely.
Your application must include a notarized statement certifying that you do not hold a valid license from another state for the same vehicle categories, plus a medical statement from a licensed physician, physician assistant, or advanced practice registered nurse who examined you no more than six months before your license’s expiration date.13Justia. REAL ID and Air Travel
REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025. To board a domestic flight or enter certain federal facilities, you now need a REAL ID-compliant license, a U.S. passport, or another federally accepted form of ID. A Hawaii REAL ID license has a gold star on the front and is issued automatically when you renew with the full set of compliant documents. If Your License Already Expired
Within the 90-day grace period, you can still renew under the normal process, though driving on an expired license is its own legal risk. After the grace period, the license shifts to expired-reactivation status: $5 for each 30-day period (or fraction of one) beyond those first 90 days, added to the standard renewal fee.2Justia.
