The Hickory NC property tax rate is $0.46 per $100 of assessed value for fiscal year 2025-2026, a half-cent increase over last year’s $0.455.1City of Hickory, North Carolina. Hickory Fiscal Year 2025-2026 Recommended Budget That city rate is only part of what you owe. Combined City and County Rates
Every Hickory property owner pays the $0.46 city rate. Add your county’s rate to get the combined figure that actually drives your bill:

Most Hickory addresses sit in Catawba County, but if you’re not sure, your parcel identification number on your tax bill or county assessment record will tell you which county and tax district apply.
Some parcels also fall within special taxing districts that add a small additional levy. Your bill will list every district that applies, so check the line items rather than assuming only the city and county rates are in play.
How Your Assessed Value Is Set
North Carolina law requires each county to revalue all real property at least once every eight years. Catawba County completed its most recent revaluation in 2023, with the next one scheduled for January 2027.4Catawba County. Revaluation Burke County also revalued in 2023 (next in 2027), and Caldwell County revalued in 2025 (next in 2029).3North Carolina Department of Revenue. 2025-2026 County Tax Rates
During a revaluation year, the county reassesses every parcel to reflect current market conditions. That new value becomes the basis for your tax bill until the next revaluation cycle. Between cycles, counties generally only adjust values for new construction, additions, or demolitions. When values rise sharply, counties often lower the rate to stay “revenue-neutral.” Hickory did exactly that in FY2023-2024, dropping the city rate from $0.6275 to $0.455 after Catawba County’s revaluation.5City of Hickory, North Carolina. Calculating Your Bill
Divide your assessed value by 100, then multiply by the combined rate for your county. For a $200,000 home:
- Catawba County: 2,000 × $0.8585 = $1,717
- Burke County: 2,000 × $1.015 = $2,030
- Caldwell County: 2,000 × $0.9575 = $1,915
If you have a mortgage, your lender almost certainly collects property taxes through an escrow account built into your monthly payment, and federal rules require your servicer to analyze that account annually and send you a statement showing the projected balance, upcoming disbursements, and any surplus or shortage.7Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 1024.17 Escrow Accounts After a revaluation, escrow shortages are common because the servicer budgeted for the old tax amount.

Programs That Can Lower What You Owe
North Carolina offers several property tax relief programs that apply to Hickory homeowners regardless of county.
Elderly or Disabled Homestead Exclusion
If you’re 65 or older, or totally and permanently disabled, you can exclude the greater of $25,000 or 50% of your home’s appraised value from taxation. On a $200,000 home, that drops $100,000 off the taxable value and cuts your bill roughly in half. There is an income limit; the base was $25,000 and adjusts annually with Social Security cost-of-living increases. Your county tax office can give you the current threshold.11North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 105-277.1 – Homestead Exclusion
Disabled Veteran Exclusion
Veterans with a 100% permanent and total service-connected disability, or those receiving benefits for specially adapted housing, can exclude the first $45,000 of their home’s assessed value from property taxes.12North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. Veterans Property Tax Relief Surviving spouses who have not remarried also qualify. At the Catawba County combined rate, this exclusion saves roughly $387 a year.
Circuit Breaker Deferment
The circuit breaker program doesn’t eliminate taxes; it defers them. Qualifying owners who are 65 or older (or permanently disabled), have owned and occupied the home for at least five years, and meet the income threshold can defer any property taxes exceeding 4% of their annual income. For incomes slightly above the standard limit but below 150% of it, the threshold rises to 5%. The deferred amount becomes a lien on the home, and when you sell, move out, or pass away, the deferred taxes plus accrued interest come due.13North Carolina General Assembly. Appealing an Assessment You Think Is Too High
If your assessed value looks wrong, you can challenge it before your county’s board of equalization and review. The board convenes each year starting between the first Monday in April and the first Monday in May.14North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 105-322 – Board of Equalization and Review Submit a written request for a hearing, or appear in person, before the board adjourns for the year.
At the hearing, you present evidence that the appraisal doesn’t reflect market value. The strongest cases rest on recent comparable sales below your assessment, an independent appraisal, or documentation of damage or defects the assessor missed. The board can lower your assessment, raise it, or leave it unchanged, and you’ll receive a written decision by mail within 30 days of adjournment.14North Carolina General Assembly.
