To check your Connecticut pistol permit status, call the office holding your application. While your application sits with the local authority, that office is your only point of contact. There’s no centralized online tracker for initial local applications. Call the police department or first selectman’s office where you submitted your paperwork and ask for an update.

A useful habit at the time you apply: ask who handles permit inquiries. Some towns assign a specific detective or administrative staffer to permits, and getting that direct line at the start saves callbacks later.

By statute, the local authority has eight weeks from receiving a complete application to approve or deny it. A denial has to come in writing with a detailed explanation of the reasons.¹ If you’re still hearing nothing past that eight-week mark, that’s the point to escalate your follow-ups.

Checking the State Permit Stage

Once you’ve converted your temporary permit at a DESPP office, your file moves to the SLFU for state-level review. The SLFU has its own eight-week window to decide. If the national criminal history records check hasn’t come back inside that window, the authority is required to notify you of the delay in writing.¹

What About the eLicense Portal?

Connecticut’s eLicense portal at elicense.ct.gov handles license verification and renewals for more than 850 credential types, pistol permits included. It’s built for people who already hold a permit, not for first-time applicants trying to track an initial decision.⁴

If you already have a state pistol permit, the portal offers two useful things. The License Lookup tool lets anyone verify whether a permit is currently active, which is the quickest way to confirm your permit is in good standing or that a renewal has posted. And when it’s time to renew, you can log in with your User ID and password, or use the Fast Track Renewal option if that appears on your renewal notification. First-time portal users validate an email address rather than creating a new account.⁴

For an initial application still in review, the portal does not appear to provide a status tracker. Phone calls to the local authority or the SLFU remain the reliable way to get updates.

Checking Renewal Status

A state pistol permit is valid for five years. The issuing authority is required to send a renewal notice — by mail or email — at least 90 days before your permit expires, with the renewal form included. You can submit the renewal as early as 31 days before expiration and as late as 31 days after. The renewal fee is $70.²

Miss the 31-day window and your permit still remains valid for 90 days past its expiration date, unless it has been revoked or revocation is pending. Past 90 days there’s no renewal available; you’d start the whole application over.⁵

To confirm a renewal has processed, run your name through the License Lookup on eLicense. If the status doesn’t show active after you’ve submitted, call the SLFU.

What to Have Ready When You Call

Whichever office you call, keep the following in front of you so the person can pull your file quickly:

Full legal name as it appears on your application
Date of birth
Date you submitted the application
Town where you applied (for local-stage calls)
Any application or receipt number you were given
Your temporary permit number, if you’re past that stage

Why Applications Stall

Most status delays trace back to something missing from the file rather than active review. A complete application generally needs the application form, proof of lawful U.S. presence, valid photo ID, fingerprints processed through the Connecticut Criminal History Records Search (CCHRS) system, and a certificate from an approved firearms safety course. For applications filed on or after July 1, 2024, that safety course must have been completed within two years before you submitted the application; older certificates no longer count.⁶ A state and national criminal history records check is part of the background investigation.²

If Your Application Was Denied

A denial is itself a status. If you receive a written denial from either the local authority or the state, you have 90 days from receiving it to appeal to the Board of Firearms Permit Examiners. You don’t need a lawyer or a formal legal pleading; a clear statement of the facts and the relief you’re seeking is enough, and the board cannot reject the appeal for lack of formality.⁷

By statute, the board must schedule a hearing within 10 days of receiving your appeal, and the authority that denied you has to submit a written explanation at least 10 days before the hearing. If they fail to do so without good cause, the board can grant your permit without a hearing. At the hearing itself the board reviews the facts from scratch and orders the permit issued unless the denial was for “just and proper cause.”⁷

The statutory timeline reads fast; the reality doesn’t. A 2025 audit found more than 1,200 pistol permit appeals backlogged before the board, with some applicants waiting months or years for a hearing. If you’re checking the status of an appeal, expect delays well past the 10-day scheduling requirement, and keep records of every communication with the board.

Make Sure You’re Checking on the Right Credential

Not everyone who applies with the SLFU is applying for a pistol permit. An eligibility certificate lets you buy a pistol or revolver and transport it to your home or place of business, but it doesn’t authorize carry.⁸ The number to call is the same — (860) 685-8290 — but knowing which credential you applied for keeps the conversation on the right file.
