How Do Georgia HOPE STEM Weighted Courses Work?

Georgia’s HOPE STEM weighted courses give you a 0.5 grade-point boost on B, C, and D grades earned in approved science, technology, engineering, and math classes when the state calculates your HOPE Scholarship GPA. A B in an approved course counts as a 3.5 instead of a 3.0, a C counts as a 2.5, and a D counts as a 1.5.1Georgia Student Finance Commission. Understanding the College HOPE GPA (STEM Directory) That adjustment can be the difference between keeping and losing your scholarship in majors where the grading runs hard.

How the 0.5 Boost Is Applied

Your HOPE GPA uses a standard 4.0 scale: A is 4.0, B is 3.0, C is 2.0, D is 1.0, and F is zero. For each approved STEM course on your record, the state adds 0.5 to the grade points for grades of B, C, or D.1Georgia Student Finance Commission. Understanding the College HOPE GPA (STEM Directory)

  • B in a STEM course: 3.0 becomes 3.5
  • C in a STEM course: 2.0 becomes 2.5
  • D in a STEM course: 1.0 becomes 1.5

Grades of A and F receive no boost. An A already sits at the top of the scale, and an F earns zero grade points. The incentive is built to reward passing performance in difficult courses, not to lift a failure.1Georgia Student Finance Commission. Why Your HOPE GPA Doesn’t Match Your Transcript

Your college reports raw grades to the state without the STEM adjustment. The 0.5 weight is applied afterward, which produces a HOPE GPA that lives in your GAfutures account and is often higher than the number on your transcript. When you want to know whether you’ll clear a scholarship checkpoint, check the state’s calculation rather than your college’s.

Which Courses Qualify

Approved courses fall into four categories: Natural Science, Mathematics, Computer Science, and Engineering. Natural Science covers biological, life, agricultural, and physical sciences, so biology, chemistry, and physics courses can qualify when they appear on the approved list. The courses selected lead toward degrees in high-demand fields including engineering, software development, nursing, physician assistance, physical therapy, pharmacy, and secondary math and science teaching.2Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC). College STEM Course Weighting Report FY 2025

Not every science or math class on your campus is on the list. Weighting applies only to degree-level courses, so remedial and developmental classes are excluded. Course codes also differ between schools, which means a biology class that qualifies at one university may carry a different number or be absent from the list at another.

Looking Up a Course in the STEM Directory

The Georgia Student Finance Commission runs an online STEM Weighted Courses Directory where you can confirm a specific course. Pick your institution from the dropdown and search by keyword or course number to see whether the class appears on the approved list.3Georgia Student Finance Commission. STEM Weighted Courses Directory Each listing shows an effective beginning term and an effective ending term; an ending term of “2099” means the course is approved indefinitely. Check the directory before you register each semester, because the list is updated annually and a course that qualified last year may not qualify this year.

The council that maintains this list publishes updates in February each year, with changes taking effect the following fall term.4Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC). College STEM Course Weighting Report

Where and When the Weighting Applies

STEM weighting applies at any HOPE-eligible postsecondary institution in Georgia, including the 26 schools in the University System of Georgia, the 22 colleges in the Technical College System of Georgia, and more than 30 eligible private institutions.5GAfutures. HOPE Scholarship Eligible Institutions You do not need to be a full-time student. HOPE has no minimum enrollment, so even students taking a single course per term receive both the scholarship payment and the STEM GPA adjustment.6Georgia Student Finance Commission. Two boundaries worth knowing. First, the weighting is a college-level benefit. Dual enrollment courses taken in high school do not get weighted in your HOPE GPA; your initial HOPE eligibility is based on a separate high school GPA calculation with a minimum 3.0 and at least four full rigor credits.7GAfutures. Initial Academic Eligibility for the HOPE Scholarship Second, STEM weighting has been in effect only since fall term 2017. Approved STEM courses taken before that semester do not receive the 0.5 weight, even if they would qualify under the current list.6Georgia Student Finance Commission. Why the Boost Matters at Checkpoints

The state checks your HOPE GPA at several points in your college career, and this is where the weighting earns its keep. The checkpoints are:

  • 30 attempted semester hours (or 45 quarter hours)
  • 60 attempted semester hours (or 90 quarter hours)
  • 90 attempted semester hours (or 135 quarter hours)
  • End of every spring term in which you received HOPE during the academic year

At each checkpoint, HOPE requires a 3.0.8GAfutures. Academic Eligibility in College When a spring-term checkpoint and an attempted-hours checkpoint land together, the attempted-hours checkpoint takes priority. A student sitting at 2.85 on raw grades can clear the 3.0 line once the 0.5 weight is applied to a semester of STEM Bs and Cs.

If you fall below 3.0 at a checkpoint, you lose the scholarship, and you can regain it only once, by bringing your HOPE GPA back to 3.0 at a later attempted-hours checkpoint. The 90-hour checkpoint is the last chance to do so. Lose it a second time and you are permanently ineligible.9GAfutures. Frequently Asked Questions That is why the STEM weight does real work in engineering and pre-med tracks: it helps keep the scholarship alive through the hardest semesters and preserves that single reinstatement for later if you need it.

Withdrawing From a Tough STEM Class

Every credit hour you attempt counts toward your lifetime HOPE hour total regardless of the grade. Fail a 4-hour STEM course and those 4 hours still count as attempted, with zero grade points and no STEM weight. Withdraw and the W stays out of your GPA calculation, but the hours still add to your attempted total.10Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC). 2025-2026 HOPE Scholarship Program at Public Institutions

That is a real tradeoff for STEM-heavy schedules. Withdrawing protects your GPA now but burns hours without producing credit. Failing drags your GPA down and eats hours. Pushing through for a C or D often serves you better in a weighted course, because the 0.5 boost turns a passing grade into something that actively helps your HOPE GPA rather than just avoiding damage.

Zell Miller Scholarship

The same HOPE GPA calculation, including the 0.5 STEM weight, determines eligibility for the Zell Miller Scholarship. The threshold is higher: Zell Miller requires a 3.3 at each checkpoint instead of HOPE’s 3.0.11GAfutures. Academic Eligibility in College for the Zell Miller Scholarship If your GPA slips below 3.3 but stays at or above 3.0, you drop off Zell Miller while remaining on HOPE.
