How Do I Check a Personalized License Plate in NC?

To check whether a personalized license plate is available in NC, use the myNCDMV online portal. There is no standalone lookup page; the availability check is built into the ordering flow. You type in the combination you want, and the system tells you on the spot whether it’s open. If it is, you can place the order in the same session or note it and apply later by mail or in person. Ordering costs $30 on top of your regular registration renewal, and the plate arrives in about six to eight weeks.¹

How to Run the Availability Check

Your vehicle has to be titled and registered in North Carolina before you can use the tool.² Have two things ready: your current license plate number and the last five digits of your vehicle title number. Both appear on your renewal notice and on your registration card.

Go to myNCDMV, open the “Order Personalized & Specialized Plates” section, and enter the combination you want. The portal returns an immediate result. There’s no cap on how many combinations you can try, so it’s fine to run several before you commit.

What “Plate Not Available” Means

If the portal tells you the plate isn’t available, one of three things is going on: another North Carolina vehicle already has that exact combination, the text conflicts with an existing plate class or series, or the NCDMV has flagged the wording as potentially inappropriate.¹ The system doesn’t tell you which reason applies. If you think the problem is a conflict with a plate class rather than a direct duplicate, try a small variation and run it again.

Character Rules That Affect Your Check

Before you spend time on combinations, know what the plate will actually hold. Limits depend on the plate type:

Personal vehicle: up to 8 characters
Private motorcycle: up to 7 characters
Private trailer: up to 8 characters
Disabled plate: up to 6 characters
Personalized specialty plate: up to 4 characters, and at least one must be a letter

You can use letters, numbers, and several special characters, including the question mark, ampersand, dollar sign, and “at” symbol.¹ The application form also lists the number sign, plus sign, slant line, equal sign, asterisk, and single quotes; each counts as one full character space.³

A few characters take up only half a space: the apostrophe, dash, comma, exclamation point, colon, and period. Half-space characters are allowed on motorcycle plates, which gives you a little more room on those shorter seven-character layouts.¹ One quirk to plan around: the letter “O” is automatically converted to a zero on all personalized plates, to avoid confusion with official plate numbering. If your idea depends on a visible “O,” it won’t survive manufacturing.

What the NCDMV Will Reject Even If It’s Open

An available combination isn’t automatically an approved one. The NCDMV can refuse any wording it considers offensive to good taste and decency, that exceeds the space limit for the plate style, or that duplicates a plate already issued in North Carolina.¹ “Offensive” is read broadly. Combinations referencing profanity, sexual content, drugs or alcohol, slurs, contempt for law enforcement, and bodily functions all get turned down. The agency keeps an internal “Do Not Issue” list and can recall a plate after approval if complaints come in.

The legal footing for that discretion: the U.S. Supreme Court has held that state-issued license plates are government speech, which gives the issuing agency wide latitude to refuse or recall combinations without triggering First Amendment protections.¹ If you apply by mail and get rejected, the NCDMV notifies you by mail. You can reapply with a different combination whenever you want. The NCDMV doesn’t publish a formal appeal process for rejected personalized text.

Ordering Once You Find One That’s Open

You have three ways to place the order:

Online through myNCDMV. Fastest route, but the third-party payment vendor (PayIt) adds a $3 transaction fee and a 1.85 percent card processing fee on top of the plate cost.⁴
By mail. Download the personalized plate application, fill it in, and send it with a $30 check to N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles, 3155 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27697-3155.²
In person at any NCDMV license plate agency, with the completed form and payment.

The $30 personalization fee is due at application and again at each annual renewal.³ It sits on top of the standard registration renewal fee, which is $46.25 for a private passenger vehicle.⁵ Keeping a personalized plate on a passenger car costs at least $76.25 a year before county taxes or specialty plate surcharges.

You can personalize both standard and specialty plate designs. Personalizing a specialty plate drops the character limit to four and requires at least one letter, and the $30 fee stacks on top of the specialty plate’s own cost.¹

After You Order

Plan on six to eight weeks between placing the order and the plate reaching your mailbox. An outside vendor makes the plate, ships it to the NCDMV, and the agency mails it to the address on your registration record with a new registration card and validation sticker.¹ Keep your current plate on the vehicle until the new one arrives; there’s no temporary tag issued during the wait.

The NCDMV doesn’t offer online tracking for individual plate orders. If nothing has arrived after eight weeks, contact the NCDMV Customer Contact Center with your current plate number and vehicle details ready.
