To file for unemployment in Florida, create an account on the CONNECT portal at connect.myflorida.com and submit a Reemployment Assistance claim as soon as possible after losing your job. Your claim’s effective date is the Sunday before you complete the application, so every week you wait is a week of benefits you can’t recover. The maximum weekly payment is $275, and benefits run between 12 and 24 weeks depending on the state’s unemployment rate.
Who Qualifies
Two things have to be true. First, you earned enough during the base period, which is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file. You need at least $3,400 in total base-period wages, earnings in at least two of those quarters, and total wages equal to at least 1.5 times your highest single quarter.1Florida House of Representatives. Florida Statutes 443.111 – Payment of Benefits
Second, you lost the job through no fault of your own. Layoffs, position eliminations, and business closures qualify. Quitting voluntarily or being fired for misconduct disqualifies you unless you can show good cause, which Florida defines narrowly: something your employer did that would make a reasonable person leave, or an illness or disability that forced you to stop working. If you’re disqualified, you can’t collect until you find new work and earn at least 17 times your weekly benefit amount.2Florida Senate. Florida Code 443.101 – Right to Benefits
You must also be physically able to work, available for full-time work, and actively looking for a job every week you claim.3Florida Senate. Florida Statutes 443.091 – Benefit Eligibility Conditions If you receive Social Security retirement income, it may reduce your weekly benefit; confirm the specifics with FloridaCommerce when you file.4Social Security Administration. Documents To Have Ready Before You Start
Open the portal with everything in front of you. FloridaCommerce cross-checks what you enter against employer records, and mismatched dates or earnings trigger delays.
- Social Security number
- Florida driver’s license or state ID card
- Work history for the last 18 months: employer names, addresses, phone numbers, and exact start and end dates for each job
- Gross earnings from your last week of employment and any severance received
Non-citizens need their Alien Registration Number. Former military members should have the DD-214 (Member 4 copy). Federal employees need Standard Form 8 or Standard Form 50.5Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. Documents Needed for Application
Filing on CONNECT
Go to connect.myflorida.com and create an account. The system walks you through screens for identification, work history, earnings, and the reason your employment ended. It asks about severance, vacation payouts, and other income. Review the final confirmation screen, submit, and save the confirmation number the system gives you. If a question about your claim comes up later, that number is your proof of filing.
Remember that the effective date is the Sunday before you complete the application. Filing on Wednesday means your claim starts the previous Sunday; filing the following Monday means you lose a week.

How Much You’ll Get and For How Long
Florida takes your highest-earning quarter in the base period and divides it by 26, rounded down to the nearest dollar. The minimum weekly benefit is $32 and the maximum is $275.1Florida House of Representatives. Florida Statutes 443.111 – Payment of Benefits That cap applies regardless of how much you earned above the qualifying threshold.
Duration ranges from 12 to 24 weeks and moves with the state’s unemployment rate: lower rate, shorter benefit window. At the $275 maximum, a full 12-week claim pays $3,300 and a full 24-week claim pays $6,600.
How You Get Paid
During the application, choose direct deposit to your bank account or a Way2Go prepaid debit card. You can change the method later in your account.8FloridaJobs.org. Payment Method Options Guide Direct deposit is faster and avoids fees.
No money arrives during the first week. Florida requires a one-week waiting period during which you must meet all eligibility conditions but receive nothing.3Florida Senate. Florida Statutes 443.091 – Benefit Eligibility Conditions
What You Have To Do Each Week To Keep Benefits
Filing the initial claim is only the start. Miss any of the ongoing requirements and payments stop.
Biweekly Certification
Every two weeks you log into CONNECT and “request” your payment by answering a short set of questions: did you work, did you earn income, did you refuse a job, did anything change about your availability. Miss the certification window and benefits stop with no grace period.
Work Search Contacts
You must contact prospective employers every week. In counties with 75,000 or more residents, that means five contacts per week; in smaller counties, three. As an alternative for a given week, you can report in person to a CareerSource center for reemployment services.9FloridaJobs.org. Work Search Requirements
Log the date, employer name, and method of contact for each. You can’t list the same employer at the same location three weeks in a row unless that employer has indicated it’s hiring since your first contact.3Florida Senate. Florida Statutes 443.091 – Benefit Eligibility Conditions FloridaCommerce runs random audits on these logs.
Employ Florida Registration
You also have to register at employflorida.com, the state’s job-matching database. It’s separate from CONNECT, and skipping it is enough on its own to suspend your benefits.
If Your Claim Is Denied
You have 20 calendar days from the date on the determination to file an appeal. If day 20 falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day.10FloridaJobs.org. File an Appeal The appeal goes to an impartial referee who holds a hearing, usually by phone, where both you and your former employer can present evidence and question each other. If the denial was based on alleged misconduct, the employer has to prove it happened; you don’t have to prove your innocence.11U.S. Department of Labor. A Guide to Unemployment Insurance Benefit Appeals Principles and Procedures
Bring documentation. Emails, written warnings or the lack of them, performance reviews, and any communications about why you were let go all strengthen your case. If you quit, bring evidence of the conditions that forced you out.
Taxes, Overpayments, and Reporting Income
Unemployment benefits are taxable federal income. Florida has no state income tax, so only federal tax applies. You can elect to have 10% withheld from each payment when you file or change the setting later in your account.12FloridaJobs.org. Tax Form 1099-G Either way you’ll get a Form 1099-G by January of the next year.13IRS. Instructions for Form 1099-G – Certain Government Payments If you skip withholding, set the money aside yourself.
If FloridaCommerce later decides you received benefits you weren’t entitled to, you have to pay them back, and fraud cases carry a 15% penalty on top of the overpayment. Overpayments can also be collected through the federal Treasury Offset Program, which intercepts your federal tax refund.14Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Treasury Offset Program Frequently Asked Questions for Debtors in the Treasury Offset Program Intentional fraud carries federal penalties up to $1,000, up to one year in prison, or both.15eCFR. Overpayments; Penalties for Fraud
The most common trigger for a fraud finding is failing to report earnings during a week you claimed benefits. If you pick up freelance work or a part-time job, report every dollar on your biweekly certification. An honest mistake can usually be worked out with a repayment plan. A deliberate omission cannot.
