How Early Can You Renew Your MA Driver’s License?

In Massachusetts you can renew your driver’s license up to one year before the expiration date printed on the card. Renewing early doesn’t shorten your next term: the new five-year cycle still runs from the original expiration date, so acting ahead of schedule costs you nothing.¹

Class D (passenger) and Class M (motorcycle) licenses are valid for five years and expire on your birthday. The Registry of Motor Vehicles does not mail renewal reminders, so tracking the date is on you. Setting a calendar note around 11 months before your birthday in your expiration year gives you a full cushion inside the one-year window.¹

How to Renew Within That Window

Online

Online is the fastest route if you qualify. The RMV lets you renew online when all of the following are true:

You are renewing an existing REAL ID or standard license, not applying for the first time.
You have a Social Security number on file.
Your license is not suspended or revoked.
You have no unpaid parking tickets, excise tax, or EZ-Pass violations.
You are 74 or younger.

If you hold a limited-term license or have no SSN, you must renew in person.¹² On the RMV portal you’ll enter your license number, the last four digits of your SSN, and an email address, then pay by card or checking account.

In Person

If you don’t qualify online, book an appointment at an RMV service center. Some locations don’t take walk-ins at all, and those that do usually have long waits. Several AAA branches in Massachusetts also process license renewals on the RMV’s behalf, which can mean shorter lines.³

By Mail (Active-Duty Military Only)

Mail renewal is limited to active-duty military members stationed outside Massachusetts and their spouses and dependents; the RMV issues a non-photo license in these cases. Send a completed application, a copy of your military ID, and the fee to the RMV.⁴

What to Have Ready

The renewal fee is $50 for a five-year Class D or Class M license, and it’s the same whether you pick a REAL ID or a standard credential.⁵

Every renewal includes a vision screening. You can take it at the service center or bring a completed RMV Vision Screening Certificate from a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist. A pre-completed certificate is worth having if you’re renewing online, since you’re not visiting a counter.⁶

A REAL ID renewal requires more paperwork than a standard renewal: one document proving lawful presence (such as a U.S. passport or certified birth certificate), one verifying your full Social Security number, and two proving Massachusetts residency (like a utility bill dated within 60 days, a current lease, or a bank statement). These apply even if you already hold a REAL ID and are just renewing it.⁷ A standard license renewal needs one proof of lawful presence, one proof of Massachusetts residency, and an SSN that validates with the Social Security Administration (or a denial notice if you don’t have one).⁸

If You Are 75 or Older

State law requires drivers 75 and older to renew in person at an RMV service center, no matter how clean the record. Online renewal isn’t available at that age. The vision screening happens at the same visit, so plan the appointment with that in mind.⁹

Why Not to Wait

The one-year window exists so you don’t have to cut it close. Letting the license lapse creates real problems:

Driving with an expired license is a violation in Massachusetts, carrying a fine and a citation on your driving record.
Auto insurance doesn’t cancel automatically when your license expires, but a claim can be denied or disputed if you were driving illegally when a crash occurred, since many policies exclude losses tied to unlawful activity.
A citation for driving with an expired license counts as a moving violation and can raise your premium at renewal.
If the license stays expired long enough, you may lose the ability to simply renew and have to reapply from scratch, which can include the written and road tests.

When Your New License Arrives

Once the renewal is processed, the RMV mails the new card to the address on file within 10 to 14 business days. Update your mailing address before you submit the renewal, not after.¹ If you renewed in person, you’ll usually leave with a temporary paper license that serves as valid ID until the permanent card arrives. If 30 days pass with no card, contact the RMV to check status or request a replacement.¹⁰
