A standard California driver’s license (Class C) is good for five years and expires on your birthday.1California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code VEH 12816 But that answer only covers one kind of California license. ID cards last six or eight years, commercial driver’s licenses run five years but hinge on a separate medical certificate, and professional licenses issued by state boards typically expire every two to four years. How long any California license is good for depends entirely on which one you hold.
Standard Driver’s Licenses
Every original Class C license expires on your fifth birthday after the date you applied, and renewals follow the same five-year cycle.1California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code VEH 12816 The renewal fee is $46.2California Department of Motor Vehicles. Licensing Fees California does not charge a late fee if you renew after expiration, but driving on an expired license is itself illegal and can get you cited.3California Department of Motor Vehicles. REAL ID Licenses
A REAL ID-compliant license carries the same five-year validity and $46 renewal fee as a standard license.2California Department of Motor Vehicles. Licensing Fees The difference is what it gets you. Since May 7, 2025, a standard California license is no longer accepted for boarding domestic flights or entering secure federal facilities like military bases and federal courthouses. You need a REAL ID, a U.S. passport, or another federally accepted ID for those purposes.4California Department of Motor Vehicles. What Is REAL ID If you haven’t upgraded yet, the DMV suggests waiting for your normal renewal cycle to avoid an extra trip.
Provisional Licenses for Teens
Drivers under 18 receive a provisional license that still runs on the standard five-year cycle. For the first 12 months after it is issued, the license comes with restrictions: no driving between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., and no passengers under 20 unless a licensed driver 25 or older (or a parent or guardian) is also in the car.5California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 12814.6 Documented exceptions exist for medical necessity, school activities, employment, and emancipated minors.
Drivers 70 and Older
Turning 70 does not shorten the five-year cycle, but it does change how you renew. Drivers 70 and older must renew in person at a DMV office every five years; online and mail renewal are not available.6California DMV. Driver’s License Renewal for 70+ The visit includes a thumbprint scan, vision exam, and new photo.3California Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew Your Driver License DL or Identification Card ID A knowledge test may be required if the DMV has concerns about your driving, but it is not automatic.
Commercial Driver’s Licenses
California CDLs are also valid for five years.1California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code VEH 12816 The five-year figure, however, understates how often most CDL holders have to deal with the DMV. Federal rules require a Medical Examiner’s Certificate, and that certificate maxes out at two years. Drivers with conditions like hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, or sleep disorders get a one-year certificate instead.7Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. For How Long Is My Medical Certificate Valid If the DMV does not receive updated certification in time, it can downgrade your CDL to a non-commercial license.
A Commercial Learner’s Permit is a different animal. CLPs are valid for only 180 days and can be renewed once for another 180 days, as long as the renewal expiration falls within one year of the original issue date.8California Department of Motor Vehicles. Commercial Driver’s Licenses
California Identification Cards
A California ID card lasts longer than a driver’s license. A standard ID is valid for six birthdates after the application date. A senior citizen ID card, free to anyone 62 or older, is valid for eight birthdates. The same federal rules apply as with licenses: a standard ID card will not get you through a TSA checkpoint or into a federal building. You need a REAL ID-compliant card, passport, or other federally accepted document for those uses.9California Department of Motor Vehicles. Identification Cards
Professional Licenses
Validity for California professional licenses depends on the licensing board. Most run on two- or four-year cycles, and nearly every renewal requires continuing education.
Physicians and Surgeons
A California Physician’s and Surgeon’s License expires every two years, on the last day of the month it was originally issued. Renewal requires completing continuing medical education and paying the fee before expiration.10Medical Board of California. Physician’s and Surgeon’s License Renewal
Registered Nurses
RN licenses also expire every two years, on the last day of your birth month. Each renewal requires 30 contact hours of continuing education in addition to the fee.11Board of Registered Nursing. Continuing Education for License Renewal
Contractors
Active contractor licenses expire every two years. Placing the license on inactive status stretches the expiration to four years, but no work can be performed under an inactive or expired license.12California Contractors State License Board. General Renewal Information
Real Estate Agents and Brokers
Real estate licenses are valid for four years from the issue date. Each renewal requires 45 clock hours of Department of Real Estate-approved continuing education covering topics such as ethics, agency relationships, trust fund handling, and fair housing.
Attorneys
California attorney licenses do not expire on a fixed cycle in the usual sense, but active status depends on annual fees. Active licensees owe $598 per year and inactive licensees owe $205, due by March 30.13The State Bar of California. Fees and Payment Attorneys also have to meet recurring Minimum Continuing Legal Education requirements. Missing either leads to administrative suspension, which bars you from practicing until you cure the deficiency.
What Happens When a California License Expires
Consequences depend on the license type, and none of them are small.
Driving on an expired license violates Vehicle Code Section 12500, which requires every person operating a motor vehicle on a highway to hold a valid license.14California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code VEH 12500 California charges no late fee on an expired renewal, so the financial penalty is the citation, not an extra DMV charge.3California Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew Your Driver License DL or Identification Card ID Insurance is the bigger risk: carriers generally cannot cancel a policy just because the license lapsed, but many policies exclude losses from illegal activity, and if you are in an accident while driving unlicensed, the claim may be denied or reduced.
For CDL holders, letting the license lapse more than two years triggers a retake of the commercial skills test before renewal.3California Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew Your Driver License DL or Identification Card ID That test involves driving an actual commercial vehicle, which means arranging access to one and finding a DMV with testing capability.
For professional licenses, practicing on an expired credential exposes you to disciplinary action from your board and, in some fields, criminal liability. Late renewal penalties generally run $50 to $300 depending on the board. If a license has been expired long enough, most boards require a full new application rather than a renewal.
Checking a California License Expiration Date
The DMV’s online portal shows the status and expiration date of any California driver’s license or ID card. You will need the license number, name, and date of birth.3California Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew Your Driver License DL or Identification Card ID
For professional licenses, the Department of Consumer Affairs runs a public license search covering every DCA-regulated board and bureau.15Department of Consumer Affairs. DCA License Search It shows whether a license is current, expired, or subject to disciplinary action, which is also useful for verifying a contractor, agent, or other licensed professional before you hire them.
