A Louisiana driver’s license is good for six years. Whether you hold a Class E regular operator’s license or a Class D chauffeur’s license, the credential expires on the birthday closest to six years from the date it was issued, and the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) sends a renewal notice about 90 days before that date.1Justia. How the Six-Year Term Is Calculated
Count six years from your issue date, then move to the nearest birthday. That is your expiration date. The rule is the same whether you are 25 or 75: Louisiana does not shorten the renewal cycle for older drivers.1Justia. Louisiana Code 32 – RS 32:412 Amount of Fees; Duration of License
The six-year clock can be cut short by a suspension, revocation, or cancellation. Short of that, the printed expiration date on the card is what controls.
Shorter Terms for Non-Citizens
If you are in the United States on a temporary immigration status, your Louisiana license is tied to the end date of your authorized stay rather than the standard six-year cycle. The card will not extend past the date on your immigration documents, and you will need updated paperwork before the OMV issues a new one.
When and How to Renew
The OMV mails a computer-generated renewal notice roughly 90 days before expiration. From there, you have three ways to renew: in person at a field office, online through the OMV ExpressLane, or by mail.2Louisiana Department of Public Safety Office of Motor Vehicles. Policy 4.01 Driver’s License Renewal by Mail or Internet
Online and mail renewals are only available when nothing about your license needs updating. You have to show up in person if your address has changed, if you need a new photo, or if your physical condition has changed since the last renewal.3Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. Driver’s License and Identification Card Renewals Frequently Asked Questions You also cannot renew online twice in a row; after one online cycle, the next renewal has to happen at a field office so the OMV can take a fresh photo.
To use the ExpressLane, you need your mailed renewal notice and a Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express card.3Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. Driver’s License and Identification Card Renewals Frequently Asked Questions The new card arrives by mail.
What Renewal Costs
The base statutory fee for a Class E license at age 70 and older is $6.75, with processing, technology, and credential charges pushing the total for a standard Class E to roughly $32.50.1Justia. Louisiana Code 32 – RS 32:412 Amount of Fees; Duration of License Endorsements and the Real ID designation can shift that total, so the number on your renewal notice is the one to trust.
Miss the expiration date by more than ten days and the OMV adds a $15 late fee if you are under 70. That ten-day window is the closest Louisiana gets to a grace period, and it only waives the fee, not the law against driving on an expired card. Renewing by mail or online after expiration carries a separate $10 late processing charge with no grace window at all, and you have twelve months from the expiration date to use those channels.4Louisiana State Legislature. One exception is worth knowing. If you had no reason to drive between your expiration date and your renewal, you can file an affidavit to that effect and the late fee is waived.4Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Code RS 32:412 – Amount of Fees; Duration of License This mainly helps people who were away, ill, or otherwise off the road for an extended stretch.
Driving Past the Expiration Date
Louisiana law prohibits driving on a public road without a valid license, and an expired license is not a valid license.5Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Code RS 32:52 – Driver Must Be Licensed You are technically driving illegally from the day after expiration, including during the ten-day fee window. An officer who runs your license during a stop can write a citation, and if the card has been expired long enough that you no longer appear as a valid driver in the system, the stop can escalate.
If you have already missed the date, the safer move is to stop driving until you renew. The $15 late fee is far cheaper than a misdemeanor citation and the insurance headaches that follow.
Vision Screening at Renewal
Louisiana’s vision standard is 20/40 acuity in at least one eye, with or without corrective lenses.6Louisiana Department of Public Safety. Class E First Time Driver’s License Adults At renewal, the OMV may screen you again, particularly if you are coming in for an in-person visit after an online cycle or if your medical status has changed. If you need glasses or contacts to meet the 20/40 threshold, your license will carry a corrective-lens restriction.
Real ID at Your Next Renewal
Federal Real ID enforcement at TSA checkpoints began on May 7, 2025.7Department of Homeland Security. TSA Begins REAL ID Full Enforcement Other federal agencies have until May 5, 2027 to reach full enforcement, but TSA is already turning travelers away for showing up with a non-compliant license and no passport or other accepted alternative.8Federal Register. Minimum Standards for Drivers Licenses and Identification Cards Acceptable by Federal Agencies for Official Purposes
A Real ID-compliant Louisiana license has a gold star in the upper-right corner. Getting one requires an in-person OMV visit with four categories of documents: proof of identity (such as a birth certificate or valid passport), your Social Security number, proof of lawful immigration status if applicable, and two documents showing your current Louisiana residential address. The OMV will not issue a Real ID through the ExpressLane or by mail. If you fly domestically and your current card has no gold star, your six-year renewal is a natural time to upgrade.
Commercial Licenses: A Shorter Practical Term
If you hold a commercial driver’s license (CDL), the six-year calendar is only part of the picture. CDL holders who drive vehicles over 10,000 pounds in interstate commerce must keep a current Medical Examiner’s Certificate on file with the OMV.9Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Medical If that certificate lapses, the OMV downgrades your CDL and you lose commercial driving privileges until you submit a current one, no matter how much time is left on the card’s printed expiration date.
CDL holders also self-certify which category of commercial driving they do (interstate, intrastate, excepted, or non-excepted), because the medical requirements differ by category.9Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Medical An unresolved violation in the federal Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse will also block Louisiana from issuing, renewing, or upgrading a CDL until the driver completes the return-to-duty process.10Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse Rulemaking Update – SDLA Requirements For commercial drivers, in other words, the medical and compliance clocks can expire well before the six-year license clock does.
