In California, you have 180 days from the date of the drawing to claim a lottery ticket for most games, one year to claim a Powerball or Mega Millions jackpot, and 180 days from a Scratchers game’s announced end date to claim a Scratchers prize. Miss the window and the ticket is void. The Lottery does not grant extensions.
Deadlines by Game
Almost every California Lottery draw game runs on the same 180-day clock, counted from the date of the winning drawing. That covers SuperLotto Plus, Fantasy 5, Daily 3, Daily 4, Daily Derby, and Hot Spot.1California Lottery. Winner’s Handbook
Scratchers work on a different clock. The 180 days do not start when you buy the ticket or scratch it off. They start on the announced end-of-game date for that particular Scratchers game. What Happens If You Miss the Window
Once the claim period ends, the ticket is void. The California Lottery does not grant extensions, hardship exceptions, or late claims under any circumstances. State law directs unclaimed prize money to public education.3California Legislative Information. California Government Code GOV 8880.321
Roughly $1.1 billion in California Lottery prizes have gone unclaimed over the Lottery’s history, most of it from smaller prizes on tickets nobody bothered to check. The Lottery publishes a list of unclaimed prizes on its website. Checking it against old tickets is a low-effort habit if you play regularly.
How to Claim Within the Window
Where you go to claim depends entirely on the size of the prize.
Prizes of $599 or Less
Take the winning ticket to any California Lottery retailer and collect cash on the spot. No forms, no ID, no appointment. You can also claim small prizes at a District Office or by mail, but the retailer route is the fastest.2California Lottery. Claim a Prize
Prizes of $600 or More
At this level, the Lottery needs a completed California Lottery Claim Form and your signed winning ticket. You have two ways to submit:

- By mail to California Lottery, 700 North 10th Street, Sacramento, CA 95811. Use certified mail with return receipt requested. If the envelope is lost, the ticket is lost, and the Lottery will not replace it.
The Claim Form asks for your legal name, address, Social Security number, and date of birth. Skipping the Social Security number triggers additional federal tax withholding on the prize.4California Lottery. FAQs
Protecting the Ticket While the Clock Runs
Sign the back of the ticket the moment you realize it’s a winner. An unsigned ticket is a bearer instrument, meaning whoever holds it can claim the prize. If a ticket is lost or damaged beyond recognition, your options depend on which game it was for. For California-only games including SuperLotto Plus, Scratchers, Fantasy 5, and Hot Spot, the Lottery has a “substantial proof” process. You submit a timely Claim Form signed under penalty of perjury, and the Lottery may pay the prize if you can validate the claim through its confidential authentication procedures. Powerball and Mega Millions have no fallback. The Lottery will not process any claim on either game without the original physical ticket. There is no substantial-proof workaround for multi-state games.5California Lottery. California Lottery Regulations
A Second Deadline for Jackpot Winners
If you win a SuperLotto Plus, Mega Millions, or Powerball jackpot, filing your claim inside the 180-day or one-year window is only the first deadline. The default payout is 30 graduated annual installments. To take the lump sum instead, you have to file a Jackpot Election Payment Form within 60 days of the date your claim is approved. The short version: check your ticket promptly, sign the back, and move on the claim well before the printed drawing date drops off the six-month horizon. For a jackpot, plan on making the annuity-versus-lump-sum decision within two months of approval, not six.
