How long you have to live in Wyoming to be a resident depends on what you’re trying to do. Voting takes no waiting period at all once you’ve moved and established a home here. To be reclassified, you need to document at least five of eight criteria, each in place for the full 12 months: a Wyoming-registered vehicle; a Wyoming driver’s license or state-issued photo ID; gainful employment of at least 20 hours per week or 1,000 hours across the year; active Wyoming voter registration; a Wyoming address on your most recent federal tax return; documented use of a Wyoming bank; a Wyoming address on all pertinent records dated from when you changed it; and benefits received from a Wyoming state, city, or county agency. This is the strictest residency test Wyoming imposes. During that entire year, you cannot have claimed residency in any other state for any purpose. That covers voting elsewhere, filing another state’s income tax as a resident, or buying a resident hunting or fishing license in another state. The Game and Fish Department investigates violations. The gap between this test and the general domicile rule catches people out. You can be a legal Wyoming resident for voting, taxes, and your driver’s license and still fall short for a resident hunting license until the full 365 days have run.
