In Colorado, how long you need your permit depends on your age. Drivers under 18 must hold an instruction permit for 12 months, or until their 18th birthday, whichever comes first.1Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. If You Are Under 18
The 12-month clock starts the day your permit is issued. The “whichever comes first” piece changes the math as you get older. A 15-year-old who gets a permit will wait the full 12 months before testing. A 17-year-old who gets a permit six months before turning 18 only needs to wait until that birthday, not a full year from the permit date.
There is also a hard floor on licensing age. No one under 16 can receive a driver’s license in Colorado, no matter how long they have held a permit.3Justia Law. Colorado Revised Statutes Title 42 – Section 42-2-104 So the earliest possible path is getting a permit on your 15th birthday and testing on your 16th.
If You Are 18 or Older
Adult applicants have no waiting period between permit and license. You can schedule the driving skills test immediately after passing the written knowledge test and receiving your permit.2Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. What Else Has to Happen During Those 12 Months
The holding period runs alongside several other requirements for drivers under 18, and all of them have to be done before you can test. Finishing the 12 months is necessary but not sufficient.
Driver Education
If you are between 15 and 15 and a half, you must complete a 30-hour driver education course before you can even get your permit.1Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Colorado Permits and First-Time Driver License4Colorado Department of Transportation. FAQs and Resources
Behind-the-Wheel Training
If you want to be licensed before you turn 16 and a half, you also need 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with an approved driving school.3Justia Law. Colorado Revised Statutes Title 42 – Section 42-2-104 If no approved school operates within 30 miles of your home, a parent or guardian can provide 12 hours of behind-the-wheel training in place of the school hours, and those 12 hours are added on top of the 50-hour driving log. At 16 and a half or older, the professional training requirement is waived.1Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Colorado Permits and First-Time Driver License
50 Hours of Supervised Driving
Every permit holder under 18 must log at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including at least 10 hours at night.3Justia Law. Colorado Revised Statutes Title 42 – Section 42-2-104 You record them on a standardized Drive Time Log Sheet that you submit with your license application.5Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Colorado Driver Handbook Your supervisor must be a licensed driver at least 21 years old, seated in the front passenger seat and wearing a seatbelt. Usually that is the parent or guardian who signed your Affidavit of Liability, though they can authorize another qualified adult.4Colorado Department of Transportation. FAQs and Resources Foster children have a broader rule: any licensed adult 21 or older can supervise.
The 10 nighttime hours are the ones families most often leave until the end. Start logging them early, since weather and shorter winter days can make last-minute scheduling difficult.
How Long Your Permit Stays Valid
Your instruction permit is valid for three years from the date it was issued.6Justia Law. Colorado Revised Statutes Title 42 – Section 42-2-106 For most teens working through the 12-month holding period, that is more than enough time. If you let the permit expire before you finish your requirements and test, you will have to reapply and pay the permit fee again.
