How long a handicap placard lasts in Nevada depends on which of the three types you receive: a temporary red placard is valid for up to six months, a moderate-duration blue placard for up to two years, and a permanent blue placard for ten years from the date of issuance.1Nevada Legislature. The Three Placard Durations
Nevada does not issue a single generic placard. The DMV uses three categories, and the one you get is tied to how long your medical provider expects your condition to last.
- Temporary (red placard): Valid for up to six months. Your medical provider must specify the start and end dates on the application itself.
- Moderate duration (blue placard): Valid for up to two years. This covers reversible conditions expected to last longer than six months.1Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes 482.384 – Special License Plates and Special and Temporary Parking Placards and Stickers
- Permanent (blue placard): Valid for ten years. This category is reserved for conditions certified as irreversible.2Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Disabled Parking
You may see older summaries online stating that permanent placards last five years. That figure is incorrect. The statute sets the expiration at ten years from the date of issuance.1Nevada Legislature. What Determines Which Placard You Get
You don’t pick the duration. Your physician, physician assistant, or advanced practice registered nurse does, by indicating on the bottom half of Form SP-27 whether your qualifying condition is temporary, moderate, or permanent.3Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Disabled Persons License Plates and/or Placards Application A broken leg that will heal in a few months lands you in the temporary category. A condition expected to last well over six months but likely to improve puts you in the two-year moderate category. A condition certified as irreversible qualifies you for the ten-year permanent placard.
Chiropractors cannot sign the medical certification. Veterans with a service-connected disability may submit a certificate from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or the Department of Defense in place of a physician’s statement.1Nevada Legislature. What Happens When It Expires
Each placard type has its own renewal path, and the rules are not interchangeable.
Permanent placards. As the ten-year expiration approaches, the Nevada DMV mails you a renewal notice. You do not need a new doctor’s signature. Return the notice or complete the top half of a new SP-27 form, and the DMV issues you a replacement.2Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Disabled Parking
Moderate-duration placards. Renewal requires a fresh medical certification. Your provider must confirm that the disability still exists and is expected to continue beyond six months.1Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes 482.384 – Special License Plates and Special and Temporary Parking Placards and Stickers Without that updated certification, the two-year clock simply runs out.
Temporary placards. These cannot be renewed. If your condition persists past the six-month window, you submit a brand-new application with updated medical certification. Depending on what your provider certifies at that point, you may end up with another temporary placard, a moderate-duration one, or a permanent one.
There is no fee for the placard itself at any stage, whether you are applying for the first time or renewing.3Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Disabled Persons License Plates and/or Placards Application
If You Lose It Before It Expires
A lost, stolen, or damaged placard does not shorten the underlying authorization. Contact the Nevada DMV to request a replacement, and the same mail, fax, or in-person channels used for the original application apply. There is no replacement fee. Having the placard’s identification number ready moves things along, so it’s a good idea to photograph your placard when you first receive it and keep the image somewhere you can find it.
A Note on Usage During the Validity Period
However long your placard is valid, it belongs to you rather than to a vehicle. You can use it in any car as long as you are the one being transported or doing the driving. Lending it to someone who does not qualify, using a placard issued to another person, or continuing to display one issued to someone who has died all count as misuse under Nevada law, and the placard holder can be cited for allowing improper use. One other boundary worth knowing: a valid Nevada placard does not exempt you from parking meter fees. You still pay the meter.2Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Disabled Parking
