The 10-to-15-business-day window is a processing window, not a total wait time. It starts when the Department of Revenue has your application in hand along with every supporting document it needs. So a clean application submitted online can turn into a title in your mailbox in about two to three weeks. A clean application sent by mail is more like four to six weeks once you count the trip to Montgomery and the trip back. Anything with a missing document or a name mismatch can add weeks on top of that.

Alabama gives you three ways to file Form MVT 12-1, and the choice matters for speed.

By Mail
Mail is the slowest route. Your envelope has to reach the Motor Vehicle Division in Montgomery, sit in a processing queue, and then the finished title has to travel back to the address on file. What Slows an Application Down
The most common cause of delay is an incomplete or inconsistent application. If the name on Form MVT 12-1 doesn’t match the name on the original title, or the VIN is off, or a required signature is missing, the department holds the file until the problem is fixed. That correction cycle usually happens by mail, which is why a small error can add a week or two.
A few other things push the timeline out:
- A required supporting document is missing. - A recorded lienholder has to sign. If your vehicle has an active lien, an authorized representative of the lienholder must complete the replacement application unless you can provide a separate lien release. - Peak filing periods and state holidays. Volume swings and closures push processing beyond the usual window.
How to Check the Status of Your Application

Where the Finished Title Is Sent
