A Virginia tax refund usually takes about two to four weeks to arrive if you filed electronically, and up to ten weeks if you mailed a paper return. The clock starts when Virginia Tax receives your return, not the day you sent it, and direct deposit lands in your account faster than a paper check.1Virginia Tax. Where’s my Refund
How Long Each Filing Method Takes
Virginia Tax uses two sets of processing windows depending on its workload. During peak filing season, e-filed returns can clear in as little as two weeks. Outside that window, estimate up to four weeks.1Virginia Tax. Where’s my Refund
Paper returns move much more slowly. Plan on up to eight weeks during filing season and up to ten weeks the rest of the year. If you sent your return by certified mail, add roughly three more weeks, because certified mail passes through extra handling at the post office before it reaches the processing center.1Virginia Tax. Where’s my Refund
Direct deposit is the fastest way to actually receive the money once your return clears. If the bank information on your return is wrong, the bank rejects the deposit and Virginia Tax mails a paper check instead, which can add about two more weeks.2Virginia Tax. Where’s my Refund?
How to Check Your Refund Status
Virginia Tax has two ways to look up a refund, both available 24 hours a day. The “Where’s My Refund” tool is on the Virginia Tax website, and an automated phone line at 804-367-2486 provides the same information. Both pull from the same system a customer service representative would see, so calling during business hours will not get you a different answer.2Virginia Tax. Where’s my Refund?
You need three things to use either option:
- The primary Social Security Number on the return
- The tax year the return covers (not the year you filed)
- Your expected refund amount, taken from Line 36 of Form 760 and rounded to the nearest whole dollar; entering cents or a figure that does not match will cause the lookup to fail3Virginia Department of Taxation. Virginia 2025 Form 760 Resident Individual Income Tax Return
Once you submit, the tool shows where your return sits in the pipeline. When processing finishes, it displays the date your refund was issued.
Why a Refund Can Run Late
A handful of issues push refunds past the standard timeline.2Virginia Tax. Where’s my Refund?
- Identity verification. Virginia Tax sometimes pulls a return for a closer look before releasing the refund. This is the delay that catches most people off guard, since you may not have done anything wrong.
- Missing information. If your return is incomplete, the agency sends a letter asking for what it needs, and the refund waits until you respond.
- Errors on the return. Math mistakes or inconsistencies get corrected, and Virginia Tax mails a letter explaining the change.
- Outstanding debts. If you owe money to a state, local, or federal agency, your refund can be reduced or withheld entirely. You will receive a notice naming the agency that made the claim, the amount applied, and a phone number for questions.4Virginia Tax. Why Was Your Refund Reduced or Withheld (Offset)?
- Wrong bank account information. A rejected direct deposit means a paper check gets issued instead, adding about two weeks.
- Paper filing. Paper processing is simply slower, and certified mail adds more time.
The best way to avoid delays is to file electronically with direct deposit and double-check your routing and account numbers before submitting.
If You Get a Refund Verification Letter
Virginia Tax will mail you a letter if it needs to verify your identity or confirm details on your return. Receiving one does not mean you made a mistake. The agency describes it as an extra step to make sure refunds go to the right person.5Virginia Tax. Refund Verification Letter
Some letters, such as those titled “Refund Verification Needed” or “Did you file a Virginia income tax return?”, let you respond online, which is the fastest way to clear the hold. To respond online you need your Social Security Number or ITIN, the Correspondence ID printed on the letter, and the tax year.5Virginia Tax. Refund Verification Letter
If your letter does not offer an online option, follow the mail or fax instructions it gives. Mailed responses go to the Virginia Department of Taxation, RAP Unit 1, P.O. Box 27003, Richmond, VA 23261-7003. Faxes go to 804-344-8565. Responding quickly is what keeps your refund moving.
When Virginia Owes You Interest
If the state holds your refund long enough, it owes you interest. Interest starts accruing 30 days after you paid the tax if you filed electronically, or 60 days after payment if you filed on paper. The rate is set by the Tax Commissioner and changes periodically.6Virginia Code Commission. Virginia Code 58.1-1833 – Interest on Overpayments or Improper Collection
You do not need to file a separate claim. If your refund qualifies, Virginia Tax calculates the interest and includes it automatically. Most refunds go out well before interest kicks in, but the rule matters if your return gets stuck in an extended review.
A Note on Virginia’s Filing Deadline
Virginia’s individual income tax deadline is May 1, not the April 15 date on federal returns.7Virginia Tax. When to File If May 1 lands on a weekend or holiday, it shifts to the next business day. Because the deadline is later, Virginia refund season also runs a bit behind the federal cycle. Filing in February or March gives you the best chance of landing in the early-season window where e-filed returns can clear in as little as two weeks.
