A South Carolina tax refund takes up to eight weeks when you file electronically, measured from February 2 or your filing date, whichever is later. Paper returns take longer than eight weeks, and amended returns take at least twelve weeks regardless of how you filed them.1South Carolina Department of Revenue. Refunds
The February 2 start date matters. The South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) does not begin processing returns until that date each year, giving employers time to meet the January 31 W-2 submission deadline.2South Carolina Department of Revenue. Tax Season Opens January 26, 2026 If you file in late January, your eight-week clock still starts February 2.
Timeline by Filing Method
- E-filed returns. Up to eight weeks from February 2 or your filing date, whichever is later. A confirmation from your tax software means the SCDOR has your return.1South Carolina Department of Revenue. Refunds
- Paper returns. Longer than eight weeks. The SCDOR does not publish a specific paper timeline, but mail delivery, sorting, and manual data entry all happen before processing starts.1South Carolina Department of Revenue. Refunds
- Amended returns. At least twelve weeks from the date you filed the amendment, whether electronic or paper.1South Carolina Department of Revenue. Refunds
When you file during the season affects your wait. Returns filed in late January or early February move faster because volume is low. Returns filed close to the April 15 deadline compete with a surge of other filings and tend to land near the upper end of the eight-week window.
For the 2025 tax year (filed in 2026), the SCDOR has noted that processing is taking longer than usual because South Carolina does not currently conform to the federal One Big Beautiful Bill Act.1South Carolina Department of Revenue. Refunds
How to Check Your Refund Status
Use the SCDOR’s “Where’s My Refund?” tool on the MyDORWAY portal. You need two pieces of information:1South Carolina Department of Revenue. Refunds
- Your Social Security Number or ITIN
- The exact whole-dollar refund amount from your SC1040
Status updates post nightly, so checking more than once a day shows nothing new. When your refund is approved, the status displays an issued date and tells you whether payment is coming by direct deposit or mailed check. For direct deposits, most banks make government electronic payments available the next business day after they receive the transfer.
What Can Push Your Refund Past Eight Weeks
Several things delay a return beyond the standard timeline:
- Errors or missing information. Mismatched Social Security numbers, incorrect names, or missing schedules force the SCDOR to pause and contact you. Each round of correspondence adds days or weeks.
- First-time filers. If you have never filed a South Carolina return, the SCDOR may take extra time to establish your tax history and verify your identity.
- Federal conformity issues. When state law has not caught up to recent federal changes, reconciling the two returns takes longer, as is the case this filing season.1South Carolina Department of Revenue. Refunds
- Peak filing volume near April 15.
If You Receive an Identity Verification Letter
Some filers get a letter from the SCDOR directing them to complete an Identity Verification Quiz or Individual Code Verification on MyDORWAY. This is a fraud-prevention step to confirm no one else filed using your information.3South Carolina Department of Revenue. Security Center Your refund will not move until you complete it, so log in and follow the instructions as soon as the letter arrives.
The SCDOR does not initiate identity verification by phone or email. If someone contacts you that way asking for personal information, treat it as a scam.
If Your Refund Is Smaller Than Expected
South Carolina’s Setoff Debt Collection Act lets state and local agencies collect delinquent debts directly from your refund, including court-ordered fines, penalties, unpaid fees, and amounts owed to any “claimant agency.”4South Carolina Legislature. The agency you owe must notify you at least 30 days before intercepting your refund. The notice goes by mail to your last known address.4South Carolina Legislature. South Carolina Code Title 12 Chapter 56 – Setoff Debt Collection Act If only part of your refund is taken, you receive the balance. Dispute the debt with the claimant agency named in the notice, not the SCDOR.
Federal debts can also reduce a federal refund through the Treasury Offset Program.5Bureau of the Fiscal Service, U.S. Department of the Treasury. Interest If the SCDOR Takes Too Long
South Carolina Code Section 12-54-25 requires the SCDOR to pay interest on refunds that take too long. Interest does not accrue if the refund is issued within 75 days after the filing deadline, or within 75 days after you filed if you filed late.7South Carolina Legislature. South Carolina Code 12-54-25 – Interest Due on Late Taxes; Applicable Interest Rate After that, interest runs from the later of your payment date or the original return due date.
The rate matches the federal underpayment rate, currently 7 percent per year for the period from January 2025 through March 2026. For fiscal year 2025–2026, state budget provisos reduce the rate paid on eligible refunds by three percentage points.8South Carolina Department of Revenue. SC Information Letter 25-22 You do not file a separate claim; the SCDOR adds any interest owed automatically.
When to Contact the SCDOR
Check “Where’s My Refund?” first. Phone representatives see the same information the online tool shows, so calling earlier rarely helps. If the online status directs you to call, or if you are past the expected timeline:9South Carolina Department of Revenue. Contact Us
