How Long Does It Take to Get a CT State Tax Refund?

If you e-filed your Connecticut return, expect your refund within a few weeks. If you filed on paper, plan on 10 to 12 weeks. That is the short answer to how long it takes to get a CT state tax refund, and the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services (DRS) handles the processing on both tracks.1Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services. How Filing Method and Payment Method Change the Wait

E-filing through myconneCT or tax software puts your return into the DRS system immediately. Paper returns have to be opened, keyed in, and handled manually, which is why they run 10 to 12 weeks during filing season.1Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services. How you asked to be paid matters too. Direct deposit is the fastest route; allow at least two business days after DRS processes your refund for the money to show up in your account.1Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services. How to Check Your Refund Status

DRS offers a free status lookup through myconneCT. From the DRS website, open myconneCT and choose “Where’s my Refund?” in the Individuals panel on the Welcome Page.2Connecticut Department of Revenue Services. About the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services myconneCT Portal You’ll need:

  • Your Social Security number (for a joint return, the primary filer’s SSN, listed first on the return).
  • The tax year the return covers.
  • The exact whole-dollar refund amount you requested.

A status of “under review” means DRS is taking a closer look and processing will take longer. “Undeliverable” points to a mailing-address problem. Paper returns won’t appear in the system at all until DRS has processed them, which can be several weeks after you mailed them.1Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services. Why a Refund Can Take Longer Than Expected

Errors on the return are the most common reason refunds slip past the usual windows. A wrong Social Security number, income figures that don’t match what your employer reported, or a math mistake can pull your return out of automated processing and into manual review. Once a human reviewer is involved there’s no set timeline; it depends on the issue and on how quickly you respond if DRS asks for more information.

Returns that trigger fraud-prevention filters, often because of unusual credits or deductions, also get extra scrutiny. That doesn’t mean you did anything wrong. The filters cast a wide net. Volume slows things too: late March through mid-April is peak season, and everything moves more slowly then. Filing early is the simplest way to get ahead of the crush.

When Your Refund Is Reduced to Pay a Debt

Your return can be accepted and your refund approved, and you still might receive less than you expected, or nothing. Under Connecticut law, the Commissioner of Revenue Services can withhold a state income tax refund to cover debts the state is collecting, including debts reported through the Commissioner of Administrative Services, defaulted loans through the Connecticut Student Loan Foundation or the Connecticut Higher Education Supplemental Loan Authority, and past-due child support.3Justia Law. Connecticut Code 12-742 – Withholding of Refund From Persons Owing Debts or Obligations to the State or in Default of Certain Student Loans For child support in a state-enforced (IV-D) case, the Department of Social Services can direct DRS to apply your refund to the arrearage.4Justia Law. Connecticut Code 52-362e – Withholding From Income Tax Refunds for Past-Due Support Through the federal Treasury Offset Program, your Connecticut refund can also be intercepted for federal debts.5Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services. If an offset happens, DRS will notify you. You have 60 days from the date of that notice to request a hearing if you think the debt amount is wrong or the claim is invalid. Miss that window and DRS releases the money to the agency that reported the debt.3Justia Law. Delays Caused by Identity Theft

If your e-filed return is rejected because someone has already filed under your SSN, or a refund check arrives that you never requested, you’re likely dealing with tax-related identity theft. These cases take significantly longer than ordinary processing delays, and your legitimate refund will be held until DRS finishes its investigation, which can take several months.

The DRS Fraud Prevention Unit handles these cases at 855-842-1441. If a fraudulent return was filed in your name, you’ll need to file a paper Connecticut return with a completed federal Form 14039 (Identity Theft Affidavit) attached and mail it to the Fraud Prevention Unit at 450 Columbus Blvd., 5th Floor, Hartford, CT 06103. If a check arrived that you didn’t request, write “VOID” across it and mail it to the same address.6Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services. ID Theft

When to Call DRS About a Missing Refund

Give the process the time it needs before you call. For paper returns, wait at least 12 weeks. For e-filed returns, wait a few weeks. Calling earlier only puts you in a queue for information the system doesn’t have yet.

The automated refund line runs 24 hours a day at 860-297-5962, or 800-382-9463 from within Connecticut but outside the Greater Hartford area.1Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services.
