How Long Does It Take to Get a Florida Personalized Plate?

Getting a personalized license plate in Florida takes about 60 to 90 days from the day you submit your application to the day the plate arrives. Most of that wait is manufacturing: the production facility needs a minimum of 45 workdays after it receives your order.1Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. What Happens During Those 60 to 90 Days

The clock has three stages, and only one of them is production.

First, your application is processed. When you hand your form to a tax collector’s office, staff screen your configuration choices, collect your fees, and submit the order into the FLHSMV system. Mailed applications sit in transit before this step even starts.

Second, the order is reviewed and sent to the manufacturer. The FLHSMV’s Inventory Control Unit screens every configuration for profanity, drug references, slurs, and sexually suggestive phrases. Third, the plate is manufactured. The 45-workday minimum starts when the production facility receives the order, not when you applied.1Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. After production, the plate ships to your address or to the tax collector’s office for pickup, depending on how your order was set up.

Driving While You Wait

You won’t be driving without a tag. When you apply for a personalized plate, the tax collector’s office can issue a 90-day temporary tag to cover the manufacturing period.2Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. What Pushes You Past 90 Days

Most orders land inside the 60-to-90-day window. A few things stretch it:

  • Incomplete or illegible applications, which force back-and-forth before the order can be submitted.
  • Configurations flagged by the Inventory Control Unit for additional management review.
  • High-volume periods at the production facility, which handles every personalized and specialty plate order in the state.
  • Mail transit, both for applications sent to Tallahassee and for finished plates mailed to applicants.
  • State holidays and system outages at the FLHSMV or the manufacturer.

A rejected configuration is its own kind of delay. If the FLHSMV turns down your choice and your application didn’t include backup options, you’re starting over. The department must return a rejected application and all fees within 15 days of receipt, so you aren’t out any money, but you are out the time.3Florida Legislature. How to Keep Your Order on the Fast End

A few choices at the start decide whether you land near 60 days or near 90.

Check availability before you apply. The FLHSMV runs a free online tool that tests up to four configurations at once and tells you immediately whether each is already assigned.4Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Apply in person rather than by mail. Florida doesn’t accept online submission for personalized plate applications. Walking the completed form (HSMV 83043) into a tax collector’s office with proof of Florida auto insurance, your current registration or renewal notice, and payment lets the staff screen your choices on the spot and submit the order the same day.5Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. List all four configuration choices on the form, ranked by preference. If your first pick is rejected or turns out to be unavailable, the department moves to the next option without requiring a new application.6Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Stay within the character rules so your form isn’t kicked back. Plates can be numbers only (1 through 999), letters only, or a mix. Letter and mixed plates allow up to seven characters plus an optional hyphen if the plate design has a center graphic; designs with a left-side graphic drop the limit to five characters, including spaces or hyphens.3Florida Legislature. If Your Plate Hasn’t Arrived

If 90 days have passed and nothing has shown up, contact your local tax collector’s office or call the FLHSMV directly for a status update. They can tell you whether the order is still in manufacturing, has shipped, or was held for a configuration review you didn’t know about. If the plate was lost in transit during original shipping, the FLHSMV will replace it free of charge as long as you apply within 180 days of the issuance date.
