A routine U.S. passport application filed from Minnesota currently takes 4 to 6 weeks to process, and expedited service takes 2 to 3 weeks. Mail time is on top of that: the State Department estimates about two weeks for your paperwork to reach a processing center and another two weeks for the finished passport to come back, so how long it takes to get a passport in Minnesota is realistically 8 to 10 weeks for routine service and 6 to 7 weeks for expedited, counted from the day you drop the envelope in the mail.1U.S. Department of State. Passport Processing Times If you need to travel sooner than that, Minnesota has a passport agency in Minneapolis that can issue a passport in a matter of days when you qualify.
The Three Speeds and What They Cost
You have three realistic paths, and each one trades money for time.
Routine service is the default. Processing runs 4 to 6 weeks, and the application fee is $130 for an adult passport book. If you apply in person, add the $35 facility acceptance fee for a total of $165. Plan on 8 to 10 weeks door to door once mail time is included.2U.S. Department of State. Passport Fees
Expedited service adds $60 to the application fee and cuts processing to 2 to 3 weeks. You can also pay $22.05 for 1-3 day return delivery, which trims most of the back-end mail time. Pairing expedited processing with faster return shipping is the standard move when you have travel coming in roughly six to seven weeks and don’t want to risk the routine window.2U.S. Department of State. Passport Fees
A passport agency appointment is the fastest option, with same-day or next-day service possible for travelers who meet the rules. Minneapolis has one of the limited number of U.S. passport agencies, so Minnesotans don’t have to leave the state for in-person emergency service.3U.S. Department of State. When Peak Season Matters
Processing times published by the State Department aren’t flat across the year. Demand climbs from late winter through summer, and the quoted windows tend to stretch toward the upper end during that stretch. If you’re booking summer travel, applying in January or February gives you the most breathing room. Waiting until April to apply for a June trip is the sort of timing that pushes people into paying for expedited service they didn’t originally need.
Mail Renewal Can Be Faster and Cheaper
If you already have a passport, you may be able to renew by mail using Form DS-82 and skip the acceptance facility entirely, which saves you the $35 facility fee and spares you the appointment. You qualify for mail renewal only if your most recent passport:
- Is in your possession and can be submitted with the application
- Is not significantly damaged
- Has never been reported lost or stolen
- Was issued within the last 15 years
- Was issued when you were 16 or older
- Was issued in your current name, or you can document a legal name change
Miss any one of those and you have to apply in person with Form DS-11.4U.S. Department of State. Renew a Passport First-time adult applicants, anyone replacing a lost or stolen passport, and anyone whose last passport was issued before age 16 or more than 15 years ago all have to show up in person as well.5U.S. Department of State. Apply in Person Mail renewal and in-person application run on the same posted processing clock; the time savings comes from not having to schedule and attend an appointment, not from faster processing at the center.
Acceptance facilities in Minnesota include post offices, county offices, and public libraries. Most take appointments only, so call before you drive. The State Department’s online facility finder lets you search by ZIP code.6U.S. Department of State. Where to Apply for a U.S. Passport
What Actually Slows Applications Down
The posted processing times assume a clean application. Several common problems reset your clock.
Photos. A rejected photo is the single most common reason an application stalls. The photo must be in color, taken within the last six months, 2×2 inches, on a white or off-white background, with no glasses. Shadows on the face, a tinted background, or a head sized wrong in the frame will get the application kicked back.7U.S. Department of State. Online Renewal Photo Requirements Many post offices and pharmacies take passport photos and know the spec.
Missing citizenship proof. You need an original or certified U.S. birth certificate from a state or county vital records office, a previous undamaged U.S. passport, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Naturalization. Hospital birth certificates and photocopies are not accepted. If your birth certificate has gone missing, ordering a certified replacement from the state where you were born can take weeks of its own before you can even start the passport clock.
Signing Form DS-11 at home. Fill it out online and print it, but don’t sign it. The acceptance agent has to witness the signature.8U.S. Department of State. U.S. Passport Applications and Forms
Letters or emails from the State Department. If the processing center needs something else from you, your application sits frozen until you respond. That delay comes directly out of your window, which stings when you’ve paid for expedited service. Respond the day you receive the request.9U.S. Department of State. Respond to a Letter or Email
One boundary worth knowing: children under 16 must apply in person with both parents or legal guardians present, and child passports are valid for only 5 years instead of 10. If one parent can’t attend, the absent parent fills out a notarized Form DS-3053.10U.S. Department of State. Apply for a Child’s Passport Under 16 Build the second parent’s schedule into your timeline, because that’s often the real bottleneck for families.
Tracking Your Application
Once you’ve submitted, you can check progress through the State Department’s online Passport Status System using your last name, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number.11U.S. Department of State. U.S. Passport Application Status It typically takes 7 to 10 business days for an application to appear in the system, since the paperwork has to physically arrive at a processing center first. Silence during that window is normal. After that you’ll see statuses like “In Process,” “Approved,” and “Mailed.”
If You Need a Passport in Days, Not Weeks
When even expedited service is too slow, the Minneapolis Passport Agency can handle you in person. There are two tracks.
Urgent travel appointment
If you have international travel coming up and can’t wait for standard processing, you can book an appointment at the agency. You need proof of upcoming international travel, such as a flight itinerary, to qualify.3U.S. Department of State. Passport Agencies
Life-or-death emergency appointment
A separate category covers true emergencies. You may qualify if you need to travel to a foreign country within the next 14 days because an immediate family member outside the United States has died, is dying, or has a life-threatening illness or injury. The State Department defines immediate family narrowly: parent, child, spouse, sibling, or grandparent. Aunts, uncles, and cousins don’t qualify.12U.S. Department of State. If your passport was lost or stolen
Report it to the State Department right away using Form DS-64, by phone at 1-877-487-2778, or by mail. Once reported, the passport is permanently invalidated and can’t be used even if you find it.13USAGov. Lost or Stolen Passports A replacement requires an in-person application with Form DS-11, full fees, and standard processing from scratch. Mail renewal is off the table.5U.S. Department of State.
