How Long Does It Take to Get a Replacement EBT Card in TN?

A replacement EBT card in Tennessee usually reaches you in about seven to ten business days after you report the old one lost, stolen, or damaged. Federal rules give the state two business days to put the new card in the mail or make it available for pickup, and standard mail delivery adds roughly five to seven business days on top of that.1eCFR. 7 CFR 274.6 – Replacement and Issuance of EBT Cards

When the Clock Starts

The wait begins the moment you report the card, so do that first. You have two ways to do it in Tennessee:

  • Call EBT Customer Service at 1-888-997-9444, available 24 hours. Have your name, address, and date of birth ready for identity verification. Your old card number helps but isn’t required.2Tennessee Department of Human Services. EBT Cards
  • Use the ebtEDGE mobile app (iPhone and Android) or the online Cardholder Portal to request the replacement directly. The same tools let you freeze the account instantly, which matters if the card was stolen rather than misplaced.2Tennessee Department of Human Services. EBT Cards

Check the address on your account before you submit the request. The new card gets mailed to whatever address the system has on file, and an outdated one adds days or sends your card somewhere you can’t retrieve it.

Can You Get It Faster?

Federal regulations allow states to make replacement cards available for pickup rather than only mailing them.1eCFR. 7 CFR 274.6 – Replacement and Issuance of EBT Cards If you need benefits urgently, call your local Tennessee Department of Human Services office and ask whether same-day card issuance is available there. The general DHS contact line, 1-833-772-8347, can direct you to the nearest office.3Tennessee Department of Human Services. Contact Us

Your Benefits While You Wait

Your SNAP and Families First balances stay on the account during the wait. Nothing is lost; you simply can’t spend anything until the new card arrives and is activated. There is no manual workaround and no way to draw cash in place of the card.

Reporting quickly also shifts liability. Once you report the card lost or stolen, the state is responsible for any benefits drawn from your account after that point.1eCFR. 7 CFR 274.6 – Replacement and Issuance of EBT Cards Transactions that happened before you reported it are treated differently, which is why the first call or app tap matters more than the exact day the new card lands in your mailbox.

Activating the New Card

The replacement will not work out of the envelope. Call 1-888-997-9444 to activate it, enter the new card number printed on the front, and set or confirm your PIN. The ebtEDGE app can also handle the PIN step.2Tennessee Department of Human Services. A Few Things the Replacement Does Not Fix

Two situations trip people up. First, if your benefits were drained by skimming rather than by someone finding your physical card, a new card does not restore the stolen money. The federal authority that allowed states to replace skimmed SNAP benefits under the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 expired at the end of 2024, and Congress did not extend it. Regular debit and credit card consumer protections do not apply to EBT cards.4Congress.gov. Benefit Theft Through Electronic Benefit Card Skimming You should still report the theft to your local SNAP office and to EBT Customer Service, and freeze the card through ebtEDGE, so there is a record if state-level relief or court-ordered replacement becomes available later.

Second, repeated replacements get flagged. Federal rules require the state to send a formal notice when you request a fourth replacement card within a 12-month period. The notice lists your replacement history, explains what counts as benefit trafficking, and tells you the account is being monitored.1eCFR. 7 CFR 274.6 – Replacement and Issuance of EBT Cards The state can also require you to contact your local DHS office and explain the need before issuing another card, and suspected fraud is referred for investigation.5Food and Nutrition Service.
