How Long Does It Take to Get an Illinois Tax Refund?

Most people get their Illinois tax refund within four to six weeks of filing electronically, or up to eight weeks after the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) receives a paper return. How long it takes to get an Illinois tax refund also depends on whether you chose direct deposit or a mailed check, whether your return gets pulled for extra review, and whether you owe debts the state can collect from your refund.1Illinois Department of Revenue. Standard Processing Times

E-filing is the fastest route. IDOR estimates electronically filed returns produce refunds in roughly four to six weeks from the filing date.1Illinois Department of Revenue. Illinois Tax Filing Tips and Resources Direct deposit shaves off additional time, since mailing a paper check adds days after the refund is approved.

Paper returns take longer because department staff have to key the information into state systems by hand. IDOR estimates paper-filed refunds arrive in about four to eight weeks from the date the department receives the return, not the date you dropped it in the mail.2Illinois Department of Revenue. Where’s My Refund? Errors on the return, heavy filing volume, and security checks can push either timeline out further.

What Happens After IDOR Approves the Refund

IDOR doesn’t issue your payment. Once the department finishes reviewing your return and approves the refund, it sends your information to the Illinois Comptroller’s office, which actually releases the money.3Illinois State Comptroller. Find Your IL Tax Refund That handoff adds a short window on top of IDOR’s processing time.

Once the Comptroller releases the payment, delivery depends on the method you picked on your return:

  • Direct deposit arrives in up to two business days.
  • A paper check can take up to ten business days to reach you through the mail.2Illinois Department of Revenue. Where’s My Refund?

If you entered the wrong bank routing or account number, the direct deposit will fail and IDOR will have to reprocess the payment, adding weeks.

How to Check the Status of Your Refund

Illinois gives you two online trackers, each covering a different stage.

IDOR’s Where’s My Refund Tool

IDOR’s “Where’s My Refund?” application at tax.illinois.gov shows whether your return is still being processed, has been approved, or has been handed off to the Comptroller for payment. It updates each business day. IDOR also offers an automated phone line, but calling taxpayer assistance will not make the refund arrive sooner.2Illinois Department of Revenue. Where’s My Refund?

The Comptroller’s Refund Tracker

Once IDOR sends your approved refund over, you can get payment-specific details through the Comptroller’s “Find Your Illinois Tax Refund” tool, which asks for your Social Security number and your first and last name.3Illinois State Comptroller. Find Your IL Tax Refund Checking this tracker before IDOR finishes processing won’t show anything, because the Comptroller hasn’t received your information yet.

What You Need to Look Up Your Status

Both tools require your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). The IDOR tool may also ask for the exact whole-dollar refund amount from your return. That figure appears on Line 38 of Form IL-1040, in Step 11.4Illinois Department of Revenue. Step 11 – Refund or Amount You Owe If what you enter doesn’t match the department’s records, the system will not display your status.

What Can Delay Your Refund

A handful of issues account for most late Illinois refunds.

Manual Review

IDOR reviews certain returns for accuracy before releasing funds. The department’s audit program is designed to promote compliance, deter tax evasion, and collect any deficiencies, while also allowing legitimate refunds to go out once the review wraps up.5Illinois Department of Revenue. Illinois Audit Information Returns with inconsistencies between reported income and withholding are more likely to be flagged.

Identity Verification Letters

If IDOR suspects possible identity theft, it may send you an identity verification letter you have to respond to before the refund is released. The letter spells out what to do, which may include taking an online quiz, entering a code, or submitting documents through MyTax Illinois.6Illinois Department of Revenue. Identity Verification Letters Information Miss the deadline in the letter and you’ll have to submit two forms of identification (one from each category listed) within 60 days of the letter’s date. Ignore it and your refund stays on hold.

If you no longer have the letter, Form IL-425 on the IDOR website lets you complete the verification.6Illinois Department of Revenue. Identity Verification Letters Information

Math Errors and Missing Schedules

A missing attachment or a math mistake will delay things. If you claimed a credit on Line 16 of the IL-1040 but didn’t attach Schedule ICR, for example, IDOR has to contact you for the missing schedule before finishing the return.7Illinois.gov Revenue. 2025 IL-1040 Schedule ICR Instructions Each exchange of letters can add weeks or months.

Debts Taken Out of Your Refund

Even after approval, IDOR can reduce your refund to cover certain debts. The IL-1040 instructions say the department will reduce any overpayment by the amount of outstanding tax, penalties, and interest you owe, along with amounts owed to other agencies or governments whose debts have been certified to the department.4Illinois Department of Revenue. Step 11 – Refund or Amount You Owe

Illinois law also lets the Clerk of the Circuit Court intercept state income tax refunds to collect unpaid court-ordered fines and assessments. Those intercepts can’t interfere with the collection of child support debts, which take priority.8Illinois General Assembly. 705 ILCS 105/27.2b If an offset happens, you’ll receive a notice showing the original amount, the offset, and the agency that received the funds.

Deadline to Claim an Illinois Refund

You don’t have unlimited time. Under Illinois law, a refund claim must be filed no later than three years after the date the original return was filed, or one year after the date the tax was paid, whichever is later. Miss that window and the state keeps the overpayment.
