How long a CEC is good for in Louisiana depends entirely on which board issued your license: continuing education certificates are tied to the license renewal cycle, which runs one year for most professions and two years for others. Real estate agents, engineers, land surveyors, and pharmacists work on an annual cycle. Registered nurses and insurance producers work on a two-year cycle. There is no statewide shelf life for a CEC itself; its validity ends when the renewal period it was earned for ends.
Validity by Profession
Each licensing board sets its own hour requirement and its own window. If you hold licenses in more than one field, you are tracking more than one clock.
Real Estate
Brokers and salespersons must complete 12 hours of continuing education every calendar year, with all coursework finished on or before December 31.1Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Revised Statutes 37:1437 – Application for License Missing that date is itself a violation of LREC law and can trigger a fine.2Louisiana Real Estate Commission. Nursing
Registered nurses run on a two-year licensure period. In each cycle, an RN must either complete 30 board-approved contact hours of CE or log at least 900 practice hours verified by an employer.3Legal Information Institute. Louisiana Administrative Code tit. 46, XLVII-3335 – Continuing Education-Nursing Practice The hours must be completed before the renewal application goes in.4Louisiana State Board of Nursing. Engineering and Land Surveying
Professional engineers must earn 15 professional development hours per calendar year, with at least one in ethics. Professional land surveyors need eight PDHs per year, with an ethics hour and an hour covering Louisiana boundary survey standards.5Legal Information Institute. Louisiana Administrative Code tit. 46, LXI-3105 – Continuing Professional Development Hours accrue annually, but LAPELS verifies compliance at the end of each biennial renewal period, so a shortfall in one year can sometimes be corrected before the two-year check.
Pharmacy
Pharmacists must earn at least 15 hours of approved continuing pharmacy education each year as a condition of renewal. A pharmacist who earns fewer than three of those hours through live presentations must complete 20 total hours instead of 15.6Louisiana Board of Pharmacy. Pharmacist Continuing Pharmacy Education
Insurance
Producers and adjusters licensed for property, casualty, life, or health lines need 24 hours of CE per two-year cycle. Title-only producers need 12 hours per cycle. Bail bond producers also need 12 hours per cycle.7Louisiana Department of Insurance. Continuing Education Requirements
Social Work
Social workers are also subject to CE rules under LAC 46:XXV.317.8Legal Information Institute. Louisiana Administrative Code tit. 46, XXV-317 – Continuing Education Requirements
When the Clock Actually Runs Out
The length of your cycle is not the same thing as your submission deadline. Real estate renewal opens August 1 and runs through September 30 for timely filing, with the coursework itself still due by December 31.9Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Revised Statutes 37:1443 – Fees2Louisiana Real Estate Commission. Continuing Education Requirements
Pharmacists need their CE credits reflected in the CPE Monitor system by their license expiration date. If the system cannot verify compliance, the board halts the renewal process and returns the application unprocessed.6Louisiana Board of Pharmacy. Pharmacist Continuing Pharmacy Education
Deadlines for nurses, engineers, and insurance producers vary by individual license date and biennial cycle. Check your board’s portal well before expiration, and verify that your provider actually reported your hours. A certificate in your file is not proof the board sees it.
How Long To Keep the Certificate Itself
Even after a CEC has been used for a renewal, you may still need to produce it. Louisiana boards can audit after renewal, and failing to document completed hours is treated the same as not having done them.
Engineers and land surveyors face the longest retention requirement: at least six consecutive calendar years of CPD records.10Legal Information Institute. Louisiana Administrative Code tit. 46, LXI-3115 Social workers must keep records for at least one year.8Legal Information Institute. Louisiana Administrative Code tit. 46, XXV-317 – Continuing Education Requirements Other boards set their own periods, and some do not publish a window but still expect records on demand. Keeping certificates for at least one full renewal cycle beyond your current one is the safe default.
What Happens If a CEC Lapses
The consequences depend on how long you wait and which board regulates you.
Real estate is the harshest. If you fail to renew by December 31, you cannot simply catch up. You must reapply as a brand-new applicant, retake both the state and national licensing exams, and redo the fingerprint background check. The one break: the LREC does not require you to retake the 90-hour pre-licensing course.11Louisiana Real Estate Commission. I Forgot to Renew My License by December 31 – What Should I Do
LAPELS treats CE non-compliance as a disciplinary matter. The board can reprimand, place on probation, suspend, or revoke a license, impose fines up to $5,000 per violation, and assess the costs of the investigation, including attorney and investigator fees.12Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board. Louisiana Revised Statutes Title 37 Chapter 8 – Professional Engineering and Professional Surveying
The Board of Pharmacy treats CE failure as a violation of R.S. 37:1241(A)(2), which can serve as grounds to refuse renewal entirely.6Louisiana Board of Pharmacy. Pharmacist Continuing Pharmacy Education A pharmacist whose renewal is refused cannot practice until compliance is restored.
An RN who misses the CE or practice-hour requirement cannot complete renewal, and the license lapses. Reinstatement involves additional fees and re-verification, with the specifics depending on how long the license has been lapsed.
Exceptions Worth Asking About
Relief from CE deadlines is not automatic, but it exists. LAPELS offers an Active/Military Exemption status for engineers and surveyors on active military duty, with no renewal fee.13Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board. License Renewal Invoice – Military Exemption Natural disasters and public health emergencies have prompted temporary relief: during COVID-19 the Louisiana State Board of Nursing adopted an emergency rule allowing it to waive CE requirements for reinstatement of lapsed, inactive, or retired RN licenses during declared public health emergencies.14Louisiana State Board of Nursing. Louisiana Administrative Code 46:XLVII.3335 – Emergency Rule The LREC has granted similar extensions after major hurricanes.
If you face a personal hardship like serious illness or a family crisis, contact your board directly. Some boards handle accommodations through informal processes that are not spelled out in their published rules.
