A Michigan CPL class certificate is good for five years from the day you finish the course. File your concealed pistol license application with your county clerk inside that five-year window, or the certificate expires and you’ll have to take an approved training course again before you can apply.1Michigan Legislature. When the Five-Year Clock Starts
The clock starts the day you complete the class, not the day the paper certificate lands in your hands. If your instructor hands out certificates a week later, or mails them, those extra days still count against your five years. Treat the course completion date printed on the certificate as the anchor and work forward from there.
The deadline is about when the county clerk receives your application, so give yourself room for fingerprinting, paperwork, and any trip to the clerk’s office. Waiting until the final weeks leaves no cushion if something in the application needs to be fixed and refiled.
What Happens If the Certificate Expires
There is no grace period and no renewal for the certificate itself. Once five years pass from the completion date, the certificate no longer satisfies the training requirement for a CPL application, and the clerk cannot accept it. The only way forward is to take another qualifying course and start fresh with a new completion date.1Michigan Legislature. Michigan Code 28.425j – Pistol Training or Safety Program
Retaking the class means paying for it again. Course prices in Michigan generally run between $75 and $200 for the required eight hours of instruction, so letting a certificate lapse is a real cost, not just a scheduling nuisance.
The Certificate Deadline Is Not the Same as Your CPL Expiration
Two different clocks confuse applicants, so it’s worth separating them.
The five-year certificate rule applies before you have a license. It governs how long your training stays valid for the purpose of applying.
Once you actually have a CPL in hand, a different rule takes over. A Michigan CPL is valid until your birthday that falls between four and five years after it’s issued, and the same formula applies after each renewal.2Michigan Legislature. Michigan Code 28.425l – License Validity Duration Renewal Renewing a CPL does not require another full eight-hour class. Instead, you self-certify that you completed at least three hours of training review and one hour of range time in the six months before you submit the renewal.3Michigan State Police. So the five-year certificate shelf life matters for first-time applicants and for anyone who let a prior CPL lapse long enough that they’re applying from scratch. If you already hold a current CPL, your training certificate’s age is no longer the controlling deadline; your license’s birthday-based expiration is.
Make Sure the Course Qualified in the First Place
A certificate only starts a valid five-year clock if the underlying course met Michigan’s requirements. If the training didn’t qualify, the certificate was never usable, no matter how recent it is.
Michigan requires at least eight hours of instruction, with a minimum of five hours in the classroom and at least three hours of live-fire range work in which you shoot at least 30 rounds. The classroom portion has to cover safe storage and handling (including child safety where minors are in the home), ammunition knowledge and shooting fundamentals, shooting positions, firearms and the law, and strategies for avoiding and controlling a violent confrontation. The firearms and law portion must be taught by an attorney or by someone specifically trained in the use of deadly force.1Michigan Legislature. Michigan Code 28.425j – Pistol Training or Safety Program
The course itself has to be certified by Michigan or by a recognized national or state firearms training organization, and the instructor has to be certified by one of those bodies. County clerks can’t add their own certification or registration requirements on top of that.1Michigan Legislature. Michigan Code 28.425j – Pistol Training or Safety Program
If any of those elements were missing from your class, the certificate won’t be accepted at the clerk’s office regardless of its date. When in doubt, ask the instructor or school for written confirmation that the course was state-certified and that it included the full classroom and range hours before you count on using the certificate to apply.
Practical Takeaway
Mark the completion date on your certificate and set a reminder well before the five-year mark. If life gets in the way of applying soon after the class, you still have years of flexibility, but the deadline is firm. Miss it and the training is gone; keep inside it and the certificate does exactly what it was issued to do.
