How Long Is a Wyoming Driver’s License Good For?

A Wyoming driver’s license is good for five years. It expires on your birthday in the fifth year after it was issued, and every standard license follows that same cycle regardless of the driver’s age.¹ If you qualify, you can extend the license by mail or online every other cycle, which means an in-person trip to a driver exam station only comes around about once a decade.

The Five-Year Cycle and Every-Other-Renewal Rule

Wyoming licenses run in five-year blocks tied to your birthday. When the expiration date approaches, you have two paths: renew in person at a driver exam station, or extend by mail or online. The remote option is available once every ten years, so drivers who used it last time will need to appear in person this time.¹

WYDOT sends eligible drivers a notification within 120 days before the license expires letting them know they can extend remotely.¹ Even when extending by mail or online, you still need a vision screening from an eye care provider dated within the past year, submitted with your application.²

Who Qualifies for the Mail or Online Extension

To extend remotely, you need a clean record and a stable file. That means no suspensions or revocations in the five years before your license expires, no medical conditions that could affect driving safety, no vision restrictions on your current license, and no changes to your name or identity documents since the last renewal.¹ If any of those apply, you’re renewing in person.

Renewing in Person

An in-person renewal takes one identity document, two proofs of address, a vision screening, and the fee.

For identity, bring one of the following: a state-certified birth certificate, a valid U.S. passport, a certificate of citizenship or naturalization, a permanent resident card, or an employment authorization document.³ A hospital birth certificate won’t work; it needs to be the state-certified version.

You also need two documents showing your current Wyoming address, each with your name and physical address, no more than 30 to 45 days old. Utility bills, bank statements, insurance documents, vehicle registration, pay stubs, and tax documents all qualify. A P.O. Box does not.³ If your name has changed since your last license, bring the legal documentation, such as a marriage certificate or court order.

The vision standard for a non-commercial license is 20/40 or better with both eyes, corrective lenses allowed, plus a combined horizontal field of vision of at least 120 degrees.⁴ If you fail the screening at the station, you can bring back the results of an evaluation done by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. Needing corrective lenses to pass adds a restriction to the license requiring you to wear them while driving.

The base fee for renewing a Class C license is $30, plus a $5 transportation information system fee, for $35 total.⁵ A motorcycle endorsement adds $11. A lost or damaged license can be replaced at any time for $25 without changing the original expiration date.⁶

Active-Duty Military Exception

Active-duty service members can have the expiration date waived entirely. When you present a valid active-duty military ID at the time of application, your license carries an “I” restriction and stays valid as long as you carry your active-duty orders or military ID with it.⁷ The same deferral applies to a spouse and dependent children living with the service member.¹ Military personnel and their dependents can also renew by mail or online as often as needed; the once-per-ten-years limit doesn’t apply to them.²

If You Miss the Expiration Date

Driving on an expired license is illegal in Wyoming. Once the license has expired, mail and online renewal drop off the table; you must appear in person at a driver exam station with the usual identity and residency documents and complete a vision screening.⁷

A longer lapse makes things harder. WYDOT may require you to retake the written knowledge test and the driving skills test before reissuing a license, and if the expiration stretches into multiple years, you may effectively be starting over as a new applicant.

The penalty for driving with an invalid license, which includes an expired one, is a misdemeanor. A conviction can bring a fine of up to $750, up to six months in jail, or both.⁸ A first offense for a simply expired license is more likely to end in a fine than jail time, but the statute gives judges room to impose either. There’s a separate insurance risk too: if you’re in an accident while your license is expired, your carrier may dispute or deny the claim under the policy’s exclusion for losses tied to illegal activity.

Commercial Licenses Follow the Same Cycle

A commercial driver’s license also runs on the five-year cycle, but a few extras attach to it. The renewal fee is $45.⁶ A hazardous materials endorsement blocks the mail and online option because the written test for that endorsement has to be retaken at each renewal; dropping the endorsement restores the remote path.²

CDL holders also carry a DOT medical examiner’s certificate valid up to 24 months, shorter if the examiner is monitoring a condition like high blood pressure.⁹ An expired medical certificate can downgrade the CDL even when the license card itself is still valid, so commercial drivers track two dates rather than one. The vision standard is stricter as well: 20/40 in each eye individually, not just 20/40 with both eyes together.¹⁰
