How Many Credits to Graduate High School in Oklahoma?

To graduate from an Oklahoma public high school, you need 23 credits. Those credits are split across seven required subject areas plus electives, and students pick one of two tracks: the core curriculum or the college preparatory/work ready curriculum. Both tracks total 23 credits, but the college prep version redistributes some electives into additional language, math, and science work. On top of the credits, Oklahoma requires several non-credit items, including CPR training, a civics test, and a FAFSA submission or opt-out.

Core Curriculum: Where the 23 Credits Go

The core curriculum is the baseline. It breaks down like this:1Oklahoma State Department of Education. 2029 Core Curriculum Graduation Requirements

  • English — 4 credits, typically English I through IV, with an approved substitute allowed for one course.
  • Mathematics — 3 credits. Algebra I is required; the other two commonly come from Geometry and Algebra II.
  • Laboratory science — 3 credits. Biology I is mandatory; the other two must be at or above that level and can come from life, physical, or earth and space sciences.
  • History and citizenship — 3 credits: U.S. History (1), Oklahoma History (½), U.S. Government (½), and one more approved course such as World History, Geography, or Economics.
  • Fine arts — 1 credit in music, art, dance, drama, or humanities.
  • World language or computer technology — 1 credit. Keyboarding and typing do not count.
  • Electives — 8 credits, open to the student’s interests, including career and technical education, AP courses, or concurrent college enrollment.

Oklahoma law lets students earn these credits either through traditional coursework or by demonstrating equivalent competency.2Justia. Oklahoma Code 70-11-103.6v2 – State Board of Education

College Prep/Work Ready Curriculum

Same 23 credits, tighter requirements. Most Oklahoma public universities base admission on this track, so students aiming at a four-year school usually choose it. The differences from the core track:3Oklahoma State Department of Education. College Prep 2029 Curriculum Graduation Requirements

  • World language or computer technology jumps from 1 credit to 2. Two years of the same language, or two years of computer technology. Keyboarding and typing still do not count.
  • All three math credits must be at or above Algebra I in rigor and approved for college admission. Algebra II, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus qualify.
  • The science credits must include Biology I, a physical science (Chemistry, Physics, or Physical Science), and a third course at or above that level.2Justia. Oklahoma Code 70-11-103.6v2 – State Board of Education
  • The 1 fine arts credit can be satisfied with a speech or communications course instead.4Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education. Speech or Fine Arts – Clarifications on History and Usage
  • One additional credit is required from career and technology education, a concurrent college course, an AP class, or an International Baccalaureate course.
  • Electives drop from 8 to 6 because of the added structured requirements.

Students on the college prep track also must participate in at least one service learning or work-based learning activity between grades 9 and 12.

Non-Credit Requirements You Also Have To Finish

Hitting 23 credits is necessary but not sufficient. Several additional requirements apply regardless of track, and seniors sometimes discover them late.

Individual Career Academic Plan

Every student who entered ninth grade in 2019–2020 or later must complete an Individual Career Academic Plan to graduate. The ICAP is built with input from parents, counselors, and teachers, maps career interests to coursework, and is updated each year.5Justia. FAFSA Submission or Opt-Out

Beginning with the 2024–2025 school year, every public high school senior must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid before graduating, or file an opt-out form. A parent or guardian signs the opt-out for students under 18; students 18 or older can sign for themselves; a school counselor can also authorize an exemption. No reason is required on the opt-out.6Justia. Oklahoma Code 70-1210.508-6 – FAFSA Submission Even students planning to go straight into the workforce need to handle one or the other, or risk a hold on the diploma.

CPR and AED Training

Every student must receive instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator at least once between ninth grade and graduation. The training can be built into any course and does not have to produce formal CPR certification. Parents can opt their student out in writing, students in virtual charter schools are exempt, and a school administrator can waive the requirement for students with qualifying disabilities.7Justia. Personal Financial Literacy

Oklahoma requires a half-credit of personal financial literacy during 10th, 11th, or 12th grade. Districts can embed it in an existing class or run a standalone course.3Oklahoma State Department of Education. College Prep 2029 Curriculum Graduation Requirements

U.S. Naturalization Test

Students must also pass a version of the U.S. Naturalization civics test before graduating. This sits separate from the history and government coursework.2Justia. Oklahoma Code 70-11-103.6v2 – State Board of Education

If the Standard Path Isn’t Working

Oklahoma offers a few alternatives for students who can’t or won’t finish 23 credits the usual way.

GED or HiSET

Oklahoma accepts two high school equivalency exams: the GED and the HiSET. Passing either earns a state-issued high school equivalency diploma from the Oklahoma Department of Education.8Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education. Testing – Adult Education and Family Literacy You must be at least 16, not currently enrolled in high school, and not already hold a diploma. The general testing age is 18; 16- and 17-year-olds need consent from both a parent and a school administrator, with a release form submitted to the test center before scheduling.9GED. Oklahoma GED Policies Oklahoma residency is not required for either exam.

Proficiency-Based Promotion

Oklahoma law lets students earn credit by passing an exam instead of sitting through the course. Every district must offer at least two opportunities per school year for students to test out of required courses. You do not need to be enrolled in or have previously taken a course to request the test, and a student, parent, teacher, or guardian can initiate the request.10Oklahoma State Department of Education. OAC 210-35-27-2 – Proficiency Based Promotion and Evaluations of Student Placement This can free schedule space for electives or let a student graduate early.

Students With an IEP

Students with an Individualized Education Program may have graduation requirements adjusted by their IEP team. Federal law under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act requires schools to begin transition planning before the student turns 16, including postsecondary goals and the supports needed to reach them, and to provide a summary of academic and functional performance before graduation or before the student turns 22.

Districts Can Require More

The 23-credit figure is a state floor. Individual districts can add on top of it: an extra year of math or science, a separate financial literacy course beyond the state’s half-credit, or additional electives tied to local industries. Check your district’s own graduation policy against the state baseline before planning out a four-year schedule.
