The guide covers traffic signs, pavement markings, right-of-way rules, speed limits for different road types, and safe-driving practices in bad weather. Road sign recognition makes up a significant portion of the exam, so give extra attention to warning signs, regulatory signs, and guide signs. Expect questions on impaired-driving laws, signaling and lane changes, and what to do at intersections.
Because the questions are pulled from a fixed source, reading the guide cover to cover is the most reliable way to prepare. Focus on anything numeric — following distances, blood alcohol limits, speed limits by road type — and on the pictorial sign section.
Languages the Test Is Offered In
The computerized test is available in ten languages: English, Arabic, Bosnian, Chinese, French, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese. A paper version adds German, Greek, and Italian. If your language isn’t on either list, you can request a state-approved interpreter, but you’ll need to schedule an appointment in advance and cover the interpreter’s cost yourself.4Missouri Office of Refugee Administration. The Other Screenings You Take the Same Day
The 25-question knowledge test is one of three components you have to pass at the exam station. The other two are a vision screening and a road sign recognition test.5Missouri Department of Revenue. Missouri Graduated Driver License Law Brochure
For the vision screening, the examiner uses a Snellen chart or equivalent device. You need at least 20/40 acuity in one or both eyes for an unrestricted permit.6Missouri Department of Revenue. 12 CSR 10-24.090 Missouri Driver License or Permit Vision Test Guidelines If you only meet that standard with glasses or contacts, your permit will carry a restriction code requiring corrective lenses while driving. The sign recognition portion checks whether you can identify road signs by their shape and color, which is another reason to study the sign section of the driver guide carefully.
What to Bring to the Exam Station
Come with original documents — the exam station won’t accept copies. At a minimum, plan on proof of your full legal name and date of birth (a certified U.S. birth certificate or valid passport works), your Social Security number, and proof of Missouri residency.7Missouri Department of Revenue. If you want a REAL ID-compliant permit, the document list is longer: one document proving identity and date of birth, one proving U.S. citizenship or lawful immigration status, one proving your Social Security number, and two documents verifying your Missouri residential address. If your current legal name doesn’t match your identity document, bring proof of the name change, such as a certified marriage license or court order.8Missouri Department of Revenue. After You Pass
Once you pass, the examiner gives you a Driver Examination Record (Form 100).7Missouri Department of Revenue. Driver Licensing Checklist The exam station itself doesn’t issue permits. Take Form 100, your identification documents, and payment to any Missouri Department of Revenue license office, where staff verify your paperwork, collect the fee, and issue a temporary paper permit you can use right away. A permanent card is mailed afterward; for a REAL ID-compliant card, allow 10 to 15 days.8Missouri Department of Revenue. One deadline worth knowing: your written test result is good for a year. If more than 12 months pass between the knowledge test and your road skills test, you’ll have to retake the vision, sign, and written tests before you can attempt the driving portion.5Missouri Department of Revenue.
