How Many VEIP Extensions Can You Get in Maryland?

Maryland doesn’t set a hard cap on how many VEIP extensions you can get. Under COMAR 11.14.08.08, the MVA has discretion to grant additional time whenever it finds a vehicle owner has made a genuine effort to comply but hit something outside their control.¹ In everyday practice, most drivers use the standard online extension once. Separate provisions for economic hardship, military duty, and vehicles operated outside Maryland can stretch relief well beyond that first window.

The Standard Extension: About Four Months

The extension you can request yourself through the MVA’s online portal runs roughly 120 days. Your registration stays valid during that period, so you can keep driving while you schedule repairs or find time to test. Each extension has to be “of the shortest duration possible” under the regulation, and the MVA determines that case by case.¹

Miss the new deadline and a $30 late fee kicks in the day after the due date. It repeats every 28 days until you comply.²

How to Request It

Log in to your myMVA account and go to the VEIP extension page. You’ll need your vehicle title number and current tag number, and the new due date should show up as soon as you submit. If you can’t use the online system, mail your request to the VEIP Program at 6601 Ritchie Highway N.E., Glen Burnie, MD 21062, or call the MVA contact center at 410-768-7000.²

When You Can Get More Than One Extension

The online self-service extension is designed for the common case: you need more time, you take it, you test. If four months isn’t going to be enough, three separate provisions in the regulation can carry you further.

Economic Hardship

If repair costs are what’s keeping you from passing, the MVA can grant an extended timeline lasting up to the remainder of your two-year inspection cycle. The eligibility rule is strict: every person listed on the vehicle title must meet the Federal Poverty Level Guidelines published annually by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and you have to submit documentation the MVA can verify.¹ General financial stress won’t qualify. Every title holder has to fall below the federal poverty line.

Military Duty

Active-duty military members can get a full waiver rather than just an extension. Under COMAR 11.14.08.07, the MVA may waive the testing requirement entirely for deployment outside the United States or a duty station in an area without an emissions inspection program. All owners on the title must certify that at least one owner meets those criteria, and the MVA can verify the information.³

Vehicles Operating Outside the Inspection Area

The MVA can also extend the deadline for a vehicle registered inside the emissions inspection area but currently operated outside it. You bring the vehicle in for testing once it comes back.¹ The MVA also notes that military members and those with vehicles outside Maryland may have out-of-state test results accepted.⁴

Alternatives That May Beat Another Extension

Two other tools can end the compliance problem outright rather than pushing it down the road.

Out-of-State Reciprocity

If your vehicle is due while you’re living or traveling outside Maryland, you may not need any extension. Maryland accepts passing emissions results from more than 30 states and jurisdictions, including Virginia, Pennsylvania, the District of Columbia, California, New York, Texas, and Ontario, Canada. Test the vehicle in one of those areas and submit the results to the MVA through your myMVA account or by fax, along with your Maryland emissions notice or your title and tag number.⁵

If you pass, the MVA updates your record and mails a compliance letter to your Maryland address. If you fail the out-of-state test, the MVA issues a four-month extension so you have time to repair and retest. If you’re in a state that isn’t on the reciprocity list, contact the MVA before your due date.⁵

Repair Cost Waiver

If your vehicle keeps failing after real money has gone into repairs, Maryland offers a repair cost waiver. Spend at least $450 on qualifying emissions-related repairs performed by a recognized repair technician, and if the vehicle still fails, you can apply for a waiver that excuses testing for the rest of the two-year cycle.⁶ You must have used any applicable warranty coverage first, the emissions controls can’t have been tampered with or removed, and the MVA or its contractor examines the vehicle to verify the repairs before issuing the waiver.³

Check First Whether You Need VEIP at All

Before you request any extension, confirm the vehicle actually needs a test. The category that catches people off guard most often is diesel and electric vehicles, which are not required to go through VEIP. Motorcycles, historic and antique vehicles, vehicles over 26,000 lbs, and new vehicles and qualifying hybrids in their first 72 months after original titling are among the other categories exempt from the program.⁴

What Happens If You Just Don’t Comply

Ignoring a VEIP notice is a slow problem that gets expensive. The $30 late fee hits the day after your deadline and compounds every 28 days. Beyond the fees, failure to complete the emissions inspection can block your registration renewal, and your tags will eventually lapse.²

Driving on expired registration is a separate offense that can bring a citation and further fines, and most auto insurance policies require a validly registered vehicle. Requesting an extension before the deadline is cheaper and simpler. The online request takes minutes, costs nothing upfront, and buys roughly four months of breathing room. If you need more than that, the hardship, military, and out-of-state provisions are the doors to try next.
