Standard license plates in New Jersey don’t carry a separate price. They come with your vehicle registration, so what you actually pay is the registration fee, which runs from $46.50 to $84.00 a year for a typical passenger car. If you want a personalized or specialty plate, add roughly $50 on top. How much license plates cost in New Jersey, in other words, is really a question about registration fees and any add-ons you choose.
Standard Passenger Vehicle Registration
New Jersey sets the annual fee using two factors: curb weight (above or below 3,500 pounds) and age (within two model years or older). The four combinations:
- Under 3,500 lbs., older than two model years: $46.50
- Under 3,500 lbs., within two model years: $59.00
- Over 3,500 lbs., older than two model years: $71.50
- Over 3,500 lbs., within two model years: $84.00
Drivers 65 and older, and people with disabilities, pay $7.00 less than the amount listed in every passenger category.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Registration and Title Fees
Brand-New Vehicles Pay Four Years Upfront
If the vehicle has never been titled before, New Jersey requires a four-year registration paid in full at purchase. The MVC calls this the accelerated registration, and you can’t choose a one-year term instead. The rate is the “within two model years” amount for your weight class, so the total due is $236.00 for cars under 3,500 lbs. or $336.00 for cars over 3,500 lbs.2New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Personalized Plates
A personalized (vanity) plate lets you pick your own character combination for a one-time $50 fee on top of your regular registration. There’s no separate annual charge for the personalization; you just keep paying the normal registration each year. If you let the registration lapse for more than two years, reactivating the personalized plates costs another $50.3New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Personalized Plates
Specialty Plates
New Jersey offers dozens of dedicated plates tied to organizations, causes, military branches, and colleges. Most cost $50 initially plus a $10 annual renewal that funds the sponsoring group. Two exceptions: the USS New Jersey Battleship plate renews at $15 a year, and the Agriculture plate is $20 upfront with no annual renewal. You can also personalize a specialty plate with up to five characters for an additional $100 initial fee.4New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Dedicated Plates
Replacement and Transfer Fees
Moving your existing plates from one of your vehicles to another costs $4.50, plus any prorated increase if the new vehicle lands in a heavier weight class. Plates can transfer between your own vehicles but not to a different owner.
If plates are lost, stolen, or damaged, replacement costs depend on registration type. One-year registrations pay $5.00. Vehicles in the first three years of a four-year accelerated registration pay $11.00, and those in the final year of that term pay $5.00.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Zero Emission Vehicle Surcharge
Electric vehicle owners pay an extra annual fee on top of standard registration. New Jersey started collecting it in July 2024 at $250 a year, with the amount rising $10 each year through 2028. That puts the 2026 figure at $270. For a new ZEV on a four-year accelerated registration, all four years of the surcharge are collected upfront.2New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Other Charges at the Counter
When you first register a vehicle, the plate-related fees aren’t the only thing you’ll owe. Every vehicle purchase triggers a $60 title transfer fee, which rises to $85 if the vehicle has a lien on it.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Registration and Title Fees
New Jersey also charges 6.625% sales tax on the purchase price of any new or used vehicle. On a $30,000 car, that’s roughly $1,988, often the single largest line on your bill and the one buyers most often forget to budget for.5New Jersey Division of Taxation. Motor Vehicle Casual Sales Notices
