How Much Are License Plates in Ohio? Fees by Vehicle Type and Plate

A standard passenger vehicle in Ohio costs $36.00 per year in base registration, and once you add the $8.00 deputy registrar fee and local permissive taxes, most drivers pay between $44.00 and $74.00 for one year of license plates. The exact figure depends on where you live, what you drive, and whether you pick a specialty plate.

What a Standard Passenger Car Costs

The base annual registration fee for a passenger car is $36.00.1Ohio BMV. Documents and Fees That covers the license tax and the administration and enforcement fee collected under Ohio Revised Code Section 4503.10, which increased on January 1, 2026.2Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code 4503 – Section 4503.10

Two things get added on top. Every one-year renewal processed at a deputy registrar agency carries an $8.00 service fee.1Ohio BMV. Documents and Fees Then come local permissive taxes, which can add anywhere from $0 to $30 depending on your taxing district. So the floor for a standard passenger car is $44.00, and the ceiling in a maxed-out district is around $74.00.

Why the Local Portion Varies

Ohio counties, municipalities, and townships can each levy $5.00 motor vehicle license taxes under Ohio Revised Code Chapter 4504.3Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code Chapter 4504> Multiple levies stack, but the total permissive tax in any single taxing district is capped at $30.00 per vehicle per year.4Ohio BMV. Not every district hits the cap. Some rural counties have only one or two levies in effect, so the local portion might be $5.00 or $10.00. Urban areas are more likely to approach $30.00. Your district’s actual rate shows up when you begin an online renewal or ask at a deputy registrar office.

Fees by Vehicle Type

Registration fees vary by vehicle class. These base fees do not include the deputy registrar fee or local permissive taxes:1Ohio BMV. Documents and Fees

  • Motorcycle: $30.00
  • Passenger car: $36.00
  • Motor home: $51.00
  • Non-commercial truck (up to three-quarter ton): listed separately on the BMV fee schedule and higher than the passenger rate

Commercial trucks are registered by gross vehicle weight rather than a flat fee. The 2026 rates already include a $35.00 administration and enforcement fee, and they range from $105 for a truck up to 6,000 lbs to $1,375 for one in the 78,001–80,000 lbs bracket.5Ohio.gov. Commercial Truck Registration Fees Commercial fees are prorated by month for partial-year registrations.

Extra Fees for Hybrids and Electric Vehicles

Ohio adds annual surcharges to vehicles that use less gasoline or none at all, to offset the fuel tax revenue those vehicles don’t generate:2Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code 4503 – Section 4503.10

  • Hybrid: $100.00
  • Plug-in hybrid: $150.00
  • Battery electric: $200.00

These stack on top of the $36.00 registration, the deputy registrar fee, and any local taxes. An EV owner in a district with the maximum $30.00 in permissive taxes pays $274.00 for a one-year renewal. The surcharges are prorated when the registration covers less than a full year.

Specialty and Personalized Plates

Ohio offers dozens of specialty plate designs, and each adds an annual fee on top of standard registration:6Ohio BMV. Documents and Fees – Section: Vehicle Registration Related Fees

  • Personalized plates: $50.00 per year
  • Initial reservation for a new specialty plate: $25.00
  • Collegiate and professional sports team plates: $35.00 per year
  • Other organizational plates: $0.00 to $50.00 per year, depending on the organization
  • Military plates: no additional annual fee
  • Accessible plates: no additional annual fee

Most specialty plates split the fee between a contribution to the sponsoring organization and a BMV administrative portion. The fee stays the same at renewal as it was at initial issuance.7Ohio BMV. Specialized Interest Plates General Information

Multi-Year Registration

You can register an eligible passenger vehicle for up to five years at once. The registration fee and permissive taxes are multiplied by the number of years, so those don’t shrink. What gets discounted is the deputy registrar fee:1Ohio BMV. Documents and Fees

  • 1 year: $8.00
  • 2 years: $12.00 (saves $4.00)
  • 3 years: $16.00 (saves $8.00)
  • 4 years: $20.00 (saves $12.00)
  • 5 years: $24.00 (saves $16.00)

The larger benefit is skipping four trips to the registrar. You’ll still need continuous insurance regardless of the registration term.

Costs When You’re Buying or Bringing In a Vehicle

If you’re registering a vehicle for the first time after a purchase, the plate fees are only a slice of the bill. Ohio charges a 5.75% state sales tax on vehicle purchases, and county or transit authority taxes push the combined rate as high as 8.75% depending on where you live.8Ohio Department of Taxation. Sales and Use Tax On a $25,000 car that’s between $1,437.50 and $2,187.50 in sales tax alone.

The title transfer fee is $18.00 in most counties, though some counties charge $23.00 where local officials have approved the higher amount.1Ohio BMV. Documents and Fees The title needs a notarized signature, and Ohio caps notary fees at $5.00 per act for in-person notarization.9Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code 147 – Section 147.08 Bringing a vehicle in from another state adds an $8.00 VIN inspection at a deputy registrar location, plus proof of financial responsibility.

Seven counties require an emissions test (E-Check) before renewal: Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, and Summit.10Ohio EPA. Testing Information The first passing test each year is free for established Ohio residents.

What Happens If You Renew Late

Ohio doesn’t charge a late fee if you renew within 30 days of expiration. After that grace period, a $10.00 late fee applies.1Ohio BMV. Documents and Fees The bigger risk isn’t the $10.00 charge. Driving on expired plates is a traffic offense that can bring a citation and additional fines.
