How Much Are Michigan Car Tax, Title, and License Fees?

Michigan car tax, title, and license fees come to 6% sales or use tax on the purchase price, $11.50 for a standard title (or $15 for a transfer, $20 for an instant title), and an annual registration fee based on the vehicle’s original list price that typically runs from $36 to several hundred dollars. Electric vehicle owners pay an extra $267 or more each year. You have 15 days from the purchase date to complete the paperwork at the Secretary of State before late fees apply.

The 6% Sales or Use Tax

Michigan applies a flat 6% tax to every vehicle purchase, whether you buy from a dealership or a private seller.1Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 205.52 – General Sales Tax Act Dealers collect it at the point of sale. On private sales, you pay the equivalent use tax directly to the Secretary of State when you apply for the title.2Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 205.93 On a $25,000 vehicle, that’s $1,500.

For private sales, the Department of Treasury can assess the tax on the greater of the purchase price or the vehicle’s fair market retail value. Writing a low number on the bill of sale does not reliably reduce the tax.

Trade-In Credit at a Dealership

If you trade a vehicle in at a dealer, Michigan subtracts the agreed trade-in value from the purchase price before calculating tax.3Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 205.51 – Definitions For 2026 the maximum credit is $12,000, and the cap rises by $1,000 each January 1 through 2028.4Michigan Secretary of State. Vehicle Sales Tax Trade-in Credit – Frequently Asked Questions Beginning in 2029, the full trade-in value will be deductible.

Buy a $30,000 vehicle in 2026 and trade in a car valued at $15,000, and you can knock $12,000 off the taxable price. You’d pay 6% on $18,000 instead of $30,000, saving $720. The trade-in value must be separately stated on the invoice. The credit does not apply to private sales.

Family Transfers Are Exempt

Transfers between certain relatives carry no use tax. Qualifying relationships include a spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent, grandchild, stepparent, stepchild, stepsibling, legal ward, legally appointed guardian, and in-laws.2Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 205.93 Aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and former spouses do not qualify.5Michigan Department of Treasury. Transferring a Vehicle Title to a Relative

Step-relationships only qualify while the marriage creating them is intact. If the stepparent and biological parent divorce before the transfer, the exemption is gone.5Michigan Department of Treasury. Transferring a Vehicle Title to a Relative A claim later found invalid can trigger a penalty of up to 100% of the tax owed on top of the tax itself.

Gifts through an estate are also exempt, as are transfers where beneficial ownership doesn’t actually change (for example, moving a vehicle into or out of a business you own).2Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 205.93

Title Fees

The statutory title fee is $10, plus a $1.50 tire disposal surcharge, for $11.50 total.6Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 257.806 – Certificate of Title or Duplicate Certificate of Title, Fees When you’re transferring ownership from another person, the Secretary of State’s office collects $15, which bundles processing costs.7Michigan Department of State. Title Transfer and Vehicle Registration

Want the title printed on the spot rather than mailed? An instant title costs $20 at any branch office. The $5 premium is useful if you need to prove ownership quickly, such as before financing or reselling. A duplicate for a lost or damaged title runs $15 by mail or $20 for same-day service.8Michigan Department of State. Title Replacement/Duplicate

Annual Registration (License Plate) Fees

This is the fee that surprises people. For any vehicle from the 1984 model year forward, Michigan calculates registration as an ad valorem tax based on the vehicle’s original list price (essentially base MSRP when it was manufactured), not what you paid for it.9Michigan Department of State. License Plates and Tabs

The schedule starts at $36 for vehicles listed at up to $6,000 and climbs in $1,000 increments. Above $30,000 in original list price, the fee is $178 plus $6 for every additional $1,000.10Michigan Legislature. Michigan Vehicle Code Chapter VII – Registration Fees A vehicle with a $50,000 original list price starts at $298 in year one.

The fee drops with age, but not by much. It’s reduced to 90% of the prior year’s amount for each of the first three renewals, then stays flat forever.10Michigan Legislature. Michigan Vehicle Code Chapter VII – Registration Fees In practice:

  • First registration: 100% of the scheduled fee
  • Second year: 90%
  • Third year: 81%
  • Fourth year and after: 72.9%, permanently

Because the calculation ties to original list price and never drops below that floor, a 15-year-old vehicle worth $3,000 on the used market can still carry a registration fee reflecting its $40,000 original sticker. Used-car buyers are often caught off guard.

Most personal registrations expire on the owner’s birthday each year.11Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 257.226 – Expiration of Vehicle or Motorcycle Registration Commercial vehicles and business-owned trailers expire on the last day of February.

Electric and Plug-In Hybrid Surcharges

Electric and plug-in hybrid owners pay an annual surcharge on top of the standard registration fee, to offset the gas tax revenue those vehicles don’t generate:9Michigan Department of State. License Plates and Tabs

  • Electric passenger vehicles: $267
  • Electric trucks and buses: $367
  • Plug-in hybrid passenger vehicles: $113
  • Plug-in hybrid trucks and buses: $183

Combine a $267 EV surcharge with a $200 base registration and the annual cost can more than double compared to a similar gas vehicle. Factor this into total ownership cost.

The 15-Day Deadline and Late Fees

You have 15 days from the purchase date to transfer a vehicle title into your name. Miss it and you owe a $15 late transfer fee on top of the standard title cost.12Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 257.234 The vehicle is considered unregistered during that gap, meaning the Secretary of State can pull the plates and you risk a citation for driving without valid registration.7Michigan Department of State. Title Transfer and Vehicle Registration

For renewals, a $10 late fee applies if you don’t renew before your expiration date.13Michigan Department of State. Tab and Plate Renewal Because renewal falls on your birthday, there isn’t much excuse for missing it.

What to Bring and How to Pay

Before your Secretary of State visit, gather the following:

  • Proof of Michigan No-Fault insurance with personal protection, property protection, and residual liability coverage from an authorized insurer. Without it, the Secretary of State will deny your title and registration application outright.14Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 500.3101 – Security for Payment of Benefits Required
  • The signed title from the seller (private sale) or dealer paperwork.
  • The VIN and the vehicle’s original MSRP, needed to calculate the registration fee for 1984 and newer vehicles.
  • The Application for Michigan Vehicle Title (Form TR-11L), which doubles as a use tax return for private purchases.15Michigan Secretary of State. Application for Michigan Vehicle Title

Michigan does not require a safety inspection or emissions test for registration. Booking an appointment through the Secretary of State’s online system will save time over walking in. The clerk verifies your insurance and documents and collects all taxes and fees in one transaction. Cash, check, and major credit cards are accepted, though credit card payments carry a convenience fee. If you’re only renewing an existing registration and nothing else is changing, you can skip the branch entirely and renew online.
