Personalized Plate Price
What most drivers mean by a “vanity plate” is officially called an Environmental License Plate (ELP) in California. It looks like a standard California plate but carries the letter-and-number combination you pick. Special Interest Plate Price
Special interest plates carry unique artwork tied to a cause or organization. Cost depends on whether you let the DMV assign a sequential number or pick your own characters:
- Sequential (DMV-assigned): $50 initial, $40 annual renewal.

Kids Plates and Legacy Plates
Two designs price differently from the rest of the special interest lineup:
- Kids Plates, which fund the Child Health and Safety Fund: $20 initial and $15 annual renewal for sequential, or $50 initial and $40 annual renewal for personalized.
- California 1960s Legacy Plates, styled after the classic black-and-gold design: $50 initial and $40 annual renewal for either sequential or personalized.

Veterans and Military Plates
Standard Veterans’ Organization plates follow the usual special interest pricing at $50 sequential or $78 personalized.3California Department of Motor Vehicles. What You’ll Actually Pay Over Time
Custom plate fees never go away. Every year you keep the plates, the renewal is added to your registration bill. Over five years, a $53 personalized plate costs $225 total ($53 plus four annual renewals at $43). If you no longer want the plates on a car but want to keep the configuration reserved, you can keep paying the annual renewal ($43 for ELPs) even when the plate isn’t assigned to a registered vehicle.1California Legislative Information. Transfer and Replacement Costs
Getting a new car doesn’t force you to give up the plate. You can reassign a special interest or personalized plate to another vehicle registered in your name using a REG 17 application along with a REG 156 to remove the plates from the old vehicle.4California Department of Motor Vehicles. A duplicate for a single damaged or unreadable plate costs $35.5California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code Division 3, Chapter 1, Article 8.4 If both plates on a passenger vehicle are lost or stolen, though, the DMV will not reissue the same configuration. You have to pick a new combination and pay the fees over again, and the lost configuration gets locked out of the system for four years from the date it was reported missing.6California Department of Motor Vehicles. How to Order and How Long It Takes
You can order three ways:
- Online through the DMV website, for original orders only (not renewals, transfers, or replacements).
- By mail using the Special Interest License Plate Application (REG 17) with payment.
- In person at any DMV office with the completed application and payment.

Your vehicle must be registered in California, and not every design is available for motorcycles.8California Department of Motor Vehicles.
