How Much Does a Kentucky Driver’s License Cost?

A Kentucky driver’s license costs between $21.50 and $48.00 for the card itself, depending on whether you choose the four-year or eight-year term and the standard or REAL ID version. Add the $15.00 or $18.00 learner’s permit you have to buy first, and the state fees run roughly $36.50 to $66.00 from your first visit to your final license in hand. Documents, optional driving lessons, and the auto insurance you’re required to carry push the real total higher.

What the Permit Fee Covers

The $15.00 standard or $18.00 REAL ID permit fee covers your application, the written knowledge test, and the vision screening administered by the Kentucky State Police. The permit is valid for three years. If it expires before you pass the road test, you can renew for the same fee, and there’s no cap on renewals.2Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Is the REAL ID Worth the Extra $2.50 to $5.00?

Starting May 7, 2025, a REAL ID-compliant license (or a valid passport) is required to board domestic flights and enter certain federal buildings. A standard Kentucky license still works for everyday driving but won’t get you through TSA. If you fly at all and don’t carry a passport, the small premium pays for itself on your first trip to the airport.

Document Costs

Kentucky requires one proof of identity, one proof of your Social Security number, and two proofs of Kentucky residency such as utility bills or bank statements.3Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Valid Proof Documents Hospital-issued birth certificates don’t count; you need the certified copy from the state where you were born.

A certified Kentucky birth certificate costs $10.00 through the Cabinet for Health and Family Services.4Cabinet for Health and Family Services. Certificate Purchase Options Out-of-state birth certificates typically run $10 to $30. A replacement Social Security card is free through the Social Security Administration. Residency documents like utility bills usually cost nothing extra since you already receive them.

Vision Screening

Since January 1, 2025, all Kentucky drivers must pass a vision screening to obtain or renew a license.5Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. You can also see your own optometrist or ophthalmologist, who will provide a Driver Vision Testing Certification Form you can bring to your appointment or upload when renewing online. Private providers set their own prices. If you’ve had an eye exam in the past 12 months, your specialist may complete the form without a new appointment.

Extra Costs for Drivers Under 18

Teen drivers move through three phases: learner’s permit, intermediate license, and full unrestricted license. During the permit phase, a parent or guardian must document at least 60 hours of supervised practice driving, with 10 of those hours at night.7Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Graduated Driver Licensing Program The practice itself is free if you have access to a vehicle and an insured licensed driver.

Before moving from the intermediate license to a full unrestricted license, teens must complete a Kentucky State Police-approved driver education course with four hours of classroom training. The classroom version is offered free to Kentucky drivers, and a high school driver education course also satisfies the requirement. The online RightLane course costs $12.50.7Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Graduated Driver Licensing Program

Driving School (Optional)

Professional lessons aren’t required for adults. A single behind-the-wheel lesson in Kentucky typically costs around $50 to $100, and multi-lesson packages range from roughly $400 to $800 depending on the school and hours included. Prices vary by provider and region. For teens working toward 60 supervised hours, families often mix free practice with a parent and a handful of paid sessions to cover trickier skills like highway merging or parallel parking.

Retest, Renewal, and Reinstatement Fees

Retaking a Test

Kentucky doesn’t charge a separate fee for retaking the standard knowledge or road skills test. You can reschedule and try again at no additional state cost beyond the permit fee already paid. Commercial applicants pay $50.00 plus a $2.50 portal administration fee for a CDL retest.8Kentucky.gov. CDL Test Payment

Renewing an Expired License

If your license expired within the past five years, you can renew without retaking any tests. If it’s been expired for more than five years, you have to start over as a new driver, paying for a new permit and passing the knowledge, vision, and road tests again.2Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Reinstating After a Suspension

Reinstating a suspended license costs $40.00 on top of whatever’s needed to resolve the underlying suspension.9Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. License Reinstatement Suspensions can result from unpaid tickets, DUI convictions, too many points, or failure to maintain insurance. The fee applies each time a suspension is lifted.

Motorcycle and Commercial Endorsements

Adding a motorcycle endorsement costs the same as the base license fee: $21.50 for standard or $24.00 for REAL ID if your license expires in four years or less, and $43.00 or $48.00 if it expires in more than four years.1Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Motorcycle Credentials You also have to pass a separate motorcycle skills test or complete the RideSmartKY training program.

CDL fees are higher than standard license fees and are listed separately on the KYTC pricing page. Budget for the permit, each endorsement test, and the road skills test, plus the $50.00 retest fee if you don’t pass on the first attempt.8Kentucky.gov. CDL Test Payment

Insurance You’ll Need Before You Drive

Kentucky law requires every vehicle on public roads to carry minimum liability insurance of $25,000 per person for bodily injury, $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $25,000 for property damage. A single combined limit of $60,000 also satisfies the requirement.10Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Mandatory Insurance

Premiums vary widely by age, driving record, and vehicle. New teen drivers often see several thousand dollars per year even when added to a parent’s policy. Adults with clean records can find minimum coverage for significantly less. Insurance is usually the largest ongoing cost of having a license and dwarfs the one-time state fees, so comparing quotes from several insurers before you get your license is worth the time.
