A license plate in Florida costs about $32.50 a year for most passenger cars, but the first time you put a plate on a vehicle here you should expect to pay roughly $300 to $400 in state fees before sales tax, because a one-time $225 initial registration fee, a title fee, and the annual registration tax all hit at once. Sales tax at 6% of the purchase price is usually the largest line on the bill.
The $225 Initial Registration Fee
The single biggest fee most people don’t expect is the $225 initial registration fee. Florida charges it once, whenever a vehicle is registered in the state for the first time, and it covers passenger cars, lightweight trucks, and motor homes.1Florida Senate. Florida Code 320.072 – Additional Fee Imposed on Certain Motor Vehicle Registration Transactions Buying from a Florida dealer? You pay it. Moving to Florida with a car titled in another state? You pay it too.
Two situations avoid the $225. It does not apply to annual renewals, so once your plate is on the road, next year’s bill will not include it. And it does not apply when you transfer an existing Florida plate from an old vehicle to a new one, which costs just $4.50.2Official Internet Site of the Florida Legislature. Annual Registration Tax by Weight
Florida charges an annual registration tax on top of any initial fee, and passenger car rates are set by net weight:3Florida Senate. Florida Code 320.08 – License Taxes
- Under 2,500 pounds: $14.50
- 2,500 to 3,499 pounds: $22.50
- 3,500 pounds or more: $32.50
Most modern sedans and SUVs land in the heaviest bracket, so $32.50 is what the majority of car owners pay each year. Motorcycles are $10 annually, plus a $2.50 motorcycle safety education fee. Heavy trucks are billed by gross vehicle weight, starting at $60.75 in the 5,001- to 6,000-pound range and reaching $1,322 at 72,000 pounds or more.3Florida Senate. Florida Code 320.08 – License Taxes
You can pay for one year or two at renewal. The two-year option doubles the tax but locks in the price and spares you a second visit. Renewals can be filed up to three months before expiration, online through the MyDMV Portal or in person at a county office.4Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Title Fees That Come With a First-Time Plate
Getting a plate on a vehicle for the first time almost always means getting a title too. The base title fee is $70,6Florida Senate. Florida Code 319.32 – Fees; Service Charges; Disposition plus $1 for the security materials used to print it.7Official Internet Site of the Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 319.32 – Fees; Service Charges; Disposition Two situations add more:
- An extra $10 for any vehicle previously titled in another state.6Florida Senate. Florida Code 319.32 – Fees; Service Charges; Disposition
- A $40 charge when a VIN inspection is required before the title is issued.8Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Schedule of Motor Vehicle and Mobile Home Title and Lien Fees
For a car brought in from another state, that puts title-related fees at $81 at minimum, or $121 if a physical inspection is also needed.
Sales Tax and County Surtax
Florida’s 6% state sales tax applies to the purchase price of the vehicle, and it must be paid before the state will register it.9Florida Senate. Florida Code 212.05 – Sales, Storage, Use Tax On a $30,000 car, that alone is $1,800.
Most counties add a local discretionary sales surtax, but for motor vehicles the surtax applies only to the first $5,000 of the price.10Florida Department of Revenue. Florida’s Discretionary Sales Surtax Rates commonly run from 0.5% to 1.5%. At a 1% rate, the surtax on that $30,000 purchase would be $50, bringing the combined tax bill to $1,850.
Transferring a Plate or Getting a Temporary Tag
If you already have a Florida-plated vehicle and are replacing it, transferring the plate to the new one costs $4.50 and skips the $225 initial fee entirely.2Official Internet Site of the Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 320.0609 – Transfer and Exchange of Registration License Plates; Transfer Fee If the new vehicle stays in the same weight class, no additional registration tax is due for the rest of the current period.
If you need to drive before your permanent plate arrives, a temporary tag costs $2 and is generally valid for 30 days. No more than two can be issued for the same vehicle. Vehicles waiting on a personalized or specialty plate get 90 days.11Official Internet Site of the Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 320.131 – Temporary Tags
Specialty Plates
Florida offers dozens of specialty license plates for colleges, causes, and organizations. A specialty plate costs the standard registration tax plus an additional annual fee that varies by design, and a $5 processing fee.12Official Internet Site of the Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 320.08056 – Specialty License Plates Check the FLHSMV website for the exact annual fee attached to your chosen plate before committing.
Late Fees If You Miss the Deadline
A delinquent fee applies starting on the 11th day of the month after your registration expires, scaled to the size of your registration tax:4Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Motor Vehicle Registrations
- Registration tax up to $25: $5 late fee
- $25.01 to $50: $10 late fee
- $50.01 to $100: $15 late fee
- $100.01 to $400: $50 late fee
- $400.01 to $600: $100 late fee
- $600.01 and higher: $250 late fee
For most passenger car owners with a $32.50 annual tax, the delinquent fee is $10. Driving on a registration expired six months or less is a noncriminal traffic infraction. Past six months, it becomes a criminal matter, and a second or subsequent offense is a second-degree misdemeanor.13Official Internet Site of the Florida Legislature. A Sample Total
Here is what a typical first-time registration looks like for someone buying a $30,000 passenger car weighing 3,500 pounds or more, with no existing Florida plate to transfer:
- Initial registration fee: $225.00
- Annual registration tax: $32.50
- Title fee: $70.00
- Title security materials: $1.00
- State sales tax (6%): $1,800.00
- Local surtax (1% on first $5,000): $50.00
- Estimated total: about $2,178.50
Your county’s surtax rate may differ, and transferring an existing Florida plate wipes out the $225 line. The bulk of the money is sales tax on the car itself. In a renewal year with no title work, most passenger car owners are looking at roughly $32.50 to $35 including the online processing fee.
