A new standard passenger license plate in Indiana costs $21.35 for the plate itself, plus a $15 title fee if the vehicle is being titled in Indiana for the first time, plus an annual vehicle excise tax that depends on the car’s original MSRP and age, plus any county surtax where you register.1IN.gov. BMV Fee Chart For a brand-new vehicle with an MSRP of $42,500 or more, the combined bill in year one can top $550. For an older, low-value car, the whole transaction can come in under $50.
The Fixed Part: Plate and Title Fees
The registration fee is set by vehicle type, not value. A passenger car is $21.35. A truck at 11,000 pounds or less is $30.35. First-time Indiana titling adds a $15 title fee on top.1IN.gov. BMV Fee Chart

Vehicle Excise Tax Is Usually the Biggest Line
Indiana charges an annual excise tax on every registered vehicle in place of a local property tax, and you pay it when you register or renew.2Indiana General Assembly. Indiana Code 6-6-5-2 – Vehicle Excise Tax Imposition The BMV sorts vehicles into 17 price classes based on original MSRP, and the tax within each class drops as the vehicle ages.
A vehicle with an MSRP of $42,500 or above owes $532 in its first model year, falls to $63 by year nine, and stays at $50 from year ten onward. A vehicle valued under $1,500 owes $12 regardless of age.3IN.gov. BMV Excise Tax Information A mid-range new car around $35,000 runs about $469 in year one; the same car at five years old drops to roughly $242.
County Surtax Can Add More
Many Indiana counties add a vehicle excise surtax on passenger cars, motorcycles, and light trucks. It’s set either as a percentage of your excise tax or as a flat dollar amount. For most counties the range is 2% to 10% of the excise tax, or a flat $7.50 to $25. Counties operating under a state-approved transportation asset management plan can go up to 20% or a flat $50. The surtax cannot fall below $7.50 per vehicle.4Indiana General Assembly. Indiana Code 6-3.5-4-2 – Imposition and Rate of Surtax Wheel Tax
Not every county charges it, so identical vehicles can cost noticeably more to register on one side of a county line than the other. Your BMV receipt breaks out the county portion when it applies.
Extra Fees for Electric and Hybrid Vehicles
If your vehicle is all-electric, add $150 per year. If it’s a hybrid, add $50 per year. These supplemental fees stack on top of the standard registration and excise tax. As of January 1, 2026, those are the locked-in figures; the BMV recalculates them annually using an adjustment factor, so future years may shift.5Indiana General Assembly. Specialty Designs and Personalization
Every organizational plate carries a group fee that goes to the sponsoring organization plus a separate BMV administrative fee, and the group fee varies by plate.6Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Indiana’s Organizational License Plates An authentic model year or civic event plate adds $37. Custom characters on any eligible plate cost an additional $45, and that fee stacks with any specialty fee.1IN.gov. BMV Fee Chart A personalized organizational plate can easily add $60 or more.
Transferring a Plate Costs Less Than Buying a New One
If you already have an Indiana plate on a vehicle you’re selling, you can move it to your new vehicle for $9.50 rather than buying a fresh plate. The same $9.50 covers a duplicate or replacement if the original was lost, stolen, or damaged.1IN.gov. BMV Fee Chart Indiana generally does not refund unused registration fees when you sell, so a transfer is the practical way to hold onto the value you’ve already paid for.7Indiana General Assembly. Deadlines and the $15 Late Penalty
You have 45 days from the purchase date to register a newly bought vehicle. New Indiana residents have 60 days after establishing residency to register vehicles they already own.8Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Vehicle Registrations Miss either window, or let a renewal lapse past the expiration date, and the BMV adds a $15 administrative penalty. Mail renewals only need to be postmarked by the expiration date to avoid it.9IN.gov. Will I Have to Pay Extra if I Don’t Renew My Plates on Time
How You Pay Affects the Total
Credit and debit card payments at the BMV carry a transaction fee of $0.40 plus 2.06% of the total.10IN.gov. BMV Fees and Taxes On a large first-year bill for a new car, that surcharge alone can run over $10. Cash or check avoids it.
Putting It Together
For a rough estimate on a standard passenger car, add up four numbers: $21.35 for the plate, $15 for the title if this is a first Indiana title, the excise tax for your MSRP class and vehicle age, and your county’s surtax if it has one. Then layer on the $150 EV or $50 hybrid fee if it applies, and any specialty or personalization fees you choose. That’s your out-the-door number before the card surcharge.
