A REAL ID in Arkansas costs $10 if you already hold a valid, unexpired Arkansas driver’s license and just want the gold star added (your current expiration date stays put), or $40 for a new license or a full eight-year renewal issued as a REAL ID.1Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Reminder – Real ID Available at All Revenue Offices So the honest answer to how much does a REAL ID cost in Arkansas depends on whether you’re converting an existing license or starting from scratch.
The Two Prices, and What Each One Buys You
The Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) sets the fee based on what you’re actually doing at the counter.
- $10 conversion. You keep the license you already have, and the clerk simply reissues it as a REAL ID with the gold star. Your expiration date does not change.
- $40 new or renewed REAL ID. This applies if you’re getting your first Arkansas license, replacing an expired one, or want a fresh eight-year term along with the star.
For context, a standard (non-REAL ID) eight-year Class D license runs $24, and a four-year license runs $12.2Justia. If you pay with a credit or debit card at a revenue office, expect a 1.6% processing surcharge on top, with no minimum charge.3Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. DFA Reduces Credit Card Fees for Revenue Office Transactions On a $40 card payment, that’s another 64 cents.
Costs That Can Sneak In
The license fee is only part of the picture if you’re missing a foundational document.
If your birth certificate is lost or damaged, you’ll need a certified replacement from the vital records office in the state where you were born. Those replacements generally run $10 to $50 depending on the state. A lost Social Security card is at least free to replace, through ssa.gov or 1-800-772-1213.
Non-citizens whose identity documents are not in English may need a certified professional translation, which typically runs $20 to $40 per page.
And a worst-case fallback worth knowing about: if you ever arrive at a TSA checkpoint without an acceptable ID, TSA’s ConfirmID program can verify your identity digitally for $45.4Transportation Security Administration. TSA ConfirmID It’s a comparison point more than a plan.
Where You Pay
REAL IDs are only issued in person at Arkansas state revenue offices. You cannot apply or pay online, or by mail, because the office has to inspect your original documents and capture your photo and signature.5Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Arkansas Real ID
Walk-ins are accepted at most offices, but you can book an appointment through the DFA’s MyDMV portal, which tends to save real time in Little Rock, Fayetteville, and Fort Smith.6Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Online Services
What to Bring So the Fee Isn’t Wasted
Every document must be an original or certified copy. Photocopies are not accepted, and a missing document means a return trip.5Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Arkansas Real ID You need one item from each of the first three categories, plus name-change paperwork if it applies:
- Proof of legal presence. A U.S. birth certificate, U.S. passport, certificate of naturalization, or certificate of citizenship for U.S. citizens. Non-citizens can use a permanent resident card (I-551), a foreign passport with a valid U.S. visa and I-94, or an employment authorization card (I-766).7Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. - Social Security number. Arkansas specifically requires the Social Security card; a DD-214 also works. Substitutes like W-2s or pay stubs are not listed as alternatives.5Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Arkansas Real ID
- Two proofs of Arkansas residency, each dated within the last six months. Utility bills, bank or mortgage statements, pay stubs, insurance policies, current lease agreements, recent tax returns, voter registration within four years, phone or cable bills, and college tuition invoices all qualify.7Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. - Name-change documents, if your current legal name differs from the name on your identity document. Bring every link in the chain: marriage certificates, divorce decrees, or court orders. Two marriages, two certificates.
Non-citizens with temporary legal status should also know that a REAL ID’s validity period may be tied to the expiration of that status rather than the standard eight-year term, which can affect whether you’re paying the $40 fee for a full eight years of use.
One Thing the Fee Does Not Get You Right Away
You leave the revenue office with a temporary paper license, and the permanent card with the gold star arrives by mail, generally in about two to three weeks. The temporary paper document is not accepted at TSA checkpoints.8Transportation Security Administration.
