A REAL ID driver’s license in California costs $46, and a REAL ID identification card costs $40. The DMV charges no extra fee for choosing the REAL ID version over a standard license or ID card, so the price you pay is simply the standard licensing fee.
Fee Breakdown by Card Type
The California DMV charges the same flat fee whether you are applying for the first time, renewing, or replacing a card that was lost or stolen. The current amounts are:
- Class C driver’s license (REAL ID): $46 for an original, a renewal, or adding a motorcycle endorsement.
- Regular identification card (REAL ID): $40 for an original, renewal, replacement, or name change.
- Replacement of a lost or stolen driver’s license: $37.
These fees are nonrefundable once you submit your application. If you cannot finish the process in one visit, your application stays valid for 12 months, so you do not have to pay again to complete it.1State of California Department of Motor Vehicles. Licensing Fees
Who Pays Less, and Who Pays Nothing
Not every applicant pays the full $40 for an ID card. California waives the fee entirely for seniors age 62 and older, and the senior citizen ID card is valid for eight years rather than the standard six. People experiencing homelessness, as defined by the McKinney-Vento Act, may also qualify for a no-fee ID card.
A reduced-fee ID card is available if you participate in certain government or nonprofit assistance programs. To claim it, bring a completed DL 937 verification form from the program to the DMV when you apply.2State of California Department of Motor Vehicles. ID Cards
None of these reductions apply to a driver’s license, only to the identification card.
How Often You Will Pay Again
A California REAL ID driver’s license expires on your fifth birthday after the application date, which works out to the $46 fee roughly every five years. A REAL ID identification card lasts six years, and the no-fee senior citizen ID card lasts eight. Renewal costs the same as the original application: $46 for a driver’s license or $40 for an ID card.3State of California Department of Motor Vehicles. Driver’s License or ID Card Renewal
Online renewal is the cheapest in time, though not in dollars. You qualify to renew online only if you do not need to change your address or personal description, and commercial licenses cannot be renewed online at all. If you have renewed by mail or internet for two consecutive cycles, the DMV requires the next renewal in person. In-person renewals mean bringing updated proof of identity and residency again, but the fee itself does not change.3State of California Department of Motor Vehicles. Limited-Term Cards Can Mean Paying Sooner
If the identity document you present to the DMV expires within five years, such as an employment authorization card, the DMV issues a limited-term REAL ID tied to that expiration date rather than a full five- or six-year card. That means you will pay the $46 or $40 fee again each time you renew your immigration status, which can be considerably more often than the standard cycle.3State of California Department of Motor Vehicles. Lawful permanent residents, visa holders, employment authorization cardholders, and naturalized citizens are all eligible for a California REAL ID; the fee is the same, only the duration changes.4LII / Legal Information Institute. What the Fee Does Not Cover
You will need to supply your own supporting documents. If you have lost your Social Security card, you can request a replacement through the Social Security Administration at no charge, but that adds processing time. Certified copies of birth certificates and other vital records are obtained from the issuing city, county, or state office and carry their own fees, which the DMV does not reimburse.
The permanent REAL ID card arrives by mail within three to four weeks of your DMV visit at no additional charge. The temporary paper document you leave the office with may not be accepted for boarding a flight, so if you have travel booked, that is a timing issue rather than a money issue.5State of California Department of Motor Vehicles. How the Cost Compares to the Alternatives
Since May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID or another federally accepted form of identification to board a domestic flight or enter secure federal facilities. If you arrive at an airport checkpoint without any acceptable ID, the TSA now offers a service called ConfirmID, introduced in February 2026, that verifies your identity for $45 and covers a 10-day travel window. You pay online, receive a receipt, and present it with any government-issued photo ID at the checkpoint.6Transportation Security Administration. A single 10-day ConfirmID window costs almost as much as a five-year California REAL ID driver’s license. For anyone flying more than once, the $46 REAL ID is by far the cheaper option.
