How Much Does an Ohio Driver’s License Cost? Fees, Renewal, and CDL

A standard Ohio driver’s license costs $27.50 for a four-year term or $54.00 for an eight-year term if you’re 21 or older.1Ohio BMV. Driver License and Identification Card Related Fees Younger applicants pay a sliding scale, and renewals, replacements, permits, and commercial licenses each carry their own price. Most Ohio driver’s license costs went up in late 2025, so older figures floating around online are likely out of date.

First-Time License Fees by Age

Ohio prices a first license on a sliding scale because the card always expires on your birthday four years out. The younger you are when you apply, the fewer months of validity you get per dollar, and the BMV adjusts accordingly:

  • Age 16: $28.75
  • Age 17: $27.50
  • Age 18: $26.25
  • Age 19: $25.00
  • Age 20: $23.75
  • Age 21 or older: $27.50 for four years, or $54.00 for eight years

The eight-year option is only available once you turn 21.1Ohio BMV. Driver License and Identification Card Related Fees Transferring an out-of-state license into Ohio uses the same standard fee for your age, and the vision screening and knowledge test carry no separate charge.

Renewal Fees

Renewing a standard operator’s license costs $30.25 for four years or $59.40 for eight years.1Ohio BMV. Driver License and Identification Card Related Fees Online renewal through the BMV website costs the same as walking into a deputy registrar office, and you can use either as long as your license is current or has been expired for fewer than six months.2Ohio BMV. One timing catch: if you’re turning 21, you can’t renew more than 30 days before your birthday, because Ohio issues a different license format once you reach 21.2Ohio BMV. Driver License and ID Cards – Renewal

If Your License Has Expired

Expired fewer than six months? You can still renew at the standard fee, but you cannot legally drive during that window. Expired more than six months but less than two years, and the BMV charges $29.50 and requires all testing again before issuing a new license.1Ohio BMV. Replacement or Duplicate License

A duplicate license is $29.00 whether yours was lost, stolen, or damaged.1Ohio BMV. Driver License and Identification Card Related Fees The replacement keeps your original expiration date, so this fee doesn’t buy a fresh four-year term. The same $29.00 applies for a new card after a name or address change.

Learner’s Permit (TIPIC)

Ohio’s learner’s permit, formally called a Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card or TIPIC, costs $26.50 for a standard operator permit.1Ohio BMV. Driver License and Identification Card Related Fees It’s the required first step for anyone under 18.

Commercial Driver’s License Fees

CDL pricing sits well above the standard fees. A first-time CDL costs $46.50 for four years or $92.00 for eight years. Renewal is $49.25 for four years or $97.40 for eight years.1Ohio BMV. REAL ID

Federal REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025. To board a domestic flight or enter certain federal buildings, you now need either a REAL ID-compliant license or another accepted ID such as a passport.3TSA. You’ll need proof of identity such as a birth certificate or U.S. passport, your Social Security card or a W-2, and two proofs of Ohio residency such as a utility bill or bank statement.4USAGov. If your license has been suspended, reinstatement can cost more than every other item on this page combined. An OVI (Operating a Vehicle Impaired) reinstatement is $475.00. Owe at least $150.00 in reinstatement fees and you may qualify for a BMV payment plan with a minimum of $25.00 due every 30 days, provided you’ve met all other reinstatement requirements, carry current proof of insurance, have no pending suspensions, and aren’t already on a court-ordered payment plan.5Ohio BMV. Driver Education for Teens

The BMV fees are only part of the picture for a new teen driver. Ohio requires 24 hours of classroom instruction and 8 hours of professional behind-the-wheel training before a minor can test for a license. Approved online classroom courses start around $48 to $90, and behind-the-wheel instruction typically runs $300 to $400 for the required eight hours, putting the total driver-education budget at roughly $350 to $500 on top of permit and license fees.7Aceable.
