The cost to get a CDL in Iowa generally runs between $1,700 and $7,500 from start to finish. Training tuition is what moves that number the most: community college programs can start around $1,500, while private truck driving schools often charge $4,000 to $7,000. State licensing fees are small by comparison, usually under $100, with a DOT physical, drug screen, and any endorsement add-ons layered on top.
Training Tuition Is the Biggest Line Item
Federal Entry-Level Driver Training rules require every first-time Class A and Class B applicant to complete an approved curriculum before taking the skills test. The program has to cover theory, range, and public road driving, and the provider must appear on the FMCSA’s Training Provider Registry.1eCFR. 49 CFR Part 380 Subpart F – Entry-Level Driver Training Requirements On and After February 7, 20222Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Iowa community colleges generally charge $1,500 to $5,000, with shorter core-skills programs on the low end and longer programs with more behind-the-wheel hours on the high end. Private truck driving schools typically run $4,000 to $7,000 but may finish faster and include job placement help.
Before you enroll, verify the school on the Training Provider Registry at tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov. Only registered providers can submit your completion to the federal database, and the state will not schedule your skills test without it. You also have one year from finishing the theory portion to complete the behind-the-wheel portion.1eCFR. 49 CFR Part 380 Subpart F – Entry-Level Driver Training Requirements On and After February 7, 2022
Ask every school exactly what tuition includes. Some bundle the permit fee, drug test, and textbooks; others charge each separately and tack a few hundred dollars onto your out-of-pocket cost. Get the answer in writing before you commit.

Medical Exam and Drug Screen
Federal rules require every CDL applicant to pass a physical with a medical examiner on the FMCSA’s National Registry.5Iowa Legislature. Iowa Code 321.188 – Commercial Driver’s License Requirements Most clinics charge $75 to $150, with some urgent-care and specialized DOT exam providers charging more. A pre-employment drug screen is also required before any employer can put you behind the wheel. Typical cost: $50 to $80. Some schools include it in tuition.
Registering for the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse is free, but employers can’t complete a full pre-employment query without your electronic consent, so setting up the account early avoids a hiring delay.7Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Skills Test
Iowa doesn’t charge a state fee for the CDL skills test when it’s taken at a state or county testing location.8Iowa Legislature. CDL Skills Test That’s unusual, and it can save real money, but availability is sometimes limited and wait times longer than at private sites.
Third-party examiners authorized by Iowa typically charge $100 to $200 for the road test. Some training schools roll the skills test fee into tuition, so confirm before scheduling. If you fail, you’ll pay the third-party fee again for a retest.

Ways to Cut the Cost
The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act is the most widely available option and can cover most or all of your tuition, permit fees, and training materials. WIOA generally targets people who are unemployed, underemployed, recently laid off, receiving public assistance, or lacking skills for in-demand jobs; veterans and military spouses often get priority. Funding decisions are local, so contact your nearest Iowa workforce development office and confirm your training program is on the state’s Eligible Training Provider List.
Starting July 1, 2026, a new Workforce Pell Grant pathway allows federal Pell funds to pay for qualifying short-term training, including some CDL programs.11U.S. Department of Education. U.S. Department of Education Issues Final Rule to Create New Workforce Pell Grant Program A qualifying program must run 8 to 15 weeks, include 150 to 599 clock hours, maintain at least a 70% completion rate and 70% job placement rate, and be tied to a high-demand industry approved by the state governor and workforce board. You’ll need the FAFSA, demonstrated financial need, and a high school diploma or GED. Accelerated programs shorter than eight weeks won’t qualify, so check with the school directly.
Some trucking companies sponsor training in exchange for a commitment to drive for them, usually one to two years. The upfront cost disappears, but leaving early typically triggers a repayment obligation. Read the contract before signing.
Recent military drivers may qualify for the federal Military Skills Test Waiver under 49 CFR 383.77, which eliminates the skills test and its cost.12Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Military Skills Test Waiver Program You must apply within one year of leaving the qualifying military position, have a clean driving record with no suspensions or revocations, and not have held more than one civilian license in the past two years. You still have to pass the written knowledge tests, get the medical certificate, and meet all other CDL requirements. Contact an Iowa DOT driver’s service center for the state application forms.
What to Bring So You Don’t Pay Twice
Before heading to an Iowa DOT office, gather proof of your full name, date of birth, and Social Security number. An Iowa driver’s license with your current address satisfies the residency requirement; without one, you’ll need two separate proofs of Iowa residency, such as utility bills or a lease.13Iowa Department of Transportation. How to Get a CDL You’ll also complete a CDL Self-Certification form declaring the type of commercial driving you plan to do.
You must be at least 18 to get a CDL in Iowa. Under 21, federal rules restrict you to intrastate driving — no crossing state lines in a commercial vehicle until you turn 21.
Confirm your mailing address before you leave the office. The hard-copy license is mailed from the state’s central printing facility, and a misdelivered card means paying for a replacement.14Iowa DOT. Iowa DOT Online Services
