Renewing a standard passenger car in Texas runs about $68 to $80 a year. That figure combines a $50.75 state base fee, a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee, and a county fee that ranges from nothing in a few rural counties up to $21.50 in Bexar and Cameron. The cost to register a car in Texas climbs well above that the first time you title a vehicle (you add a $33 title fee and 6.25% sales tax on the purchase price) and climbs another $200 a year if the car is fully electric.
What You Pay Every Year
The annual bill has three parts: a state fee set by vehicle type and weight, a flat inspection replacement fee, and a local county charge.
The state portion is $50.75 for passenger cars and light trucks weighing 6,000 pounds or less, $54 for trucks between 6,001 and 10,000 pounds, and $30 for motorcycles and mopeds.1Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Schedule of Texas Registration Fees The truck threshold uses gross vehicle weight, meaning empty weight plus the heaviest load you’ll carry during the registration year. A half-ton pickup that never hauls anything heavy usually stays under 6,000 pounds, but a heavy trailer tongue weight or loaded bed can push it into the next bracket on paper.
On top of that, every registration includes a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee. Texas eliminated the standalone safety inspection for non-commercial vehicles on January 1, 2025, so you no longer stop at an inspection station before renewing. The $7.50 is collected at renewal instead.2Department of Public Safety. Vehicle Safety Inspection Changes Take Effect January 2025 If your vehicle is in a county that requires emissions testing, you still need a passing emissions test on file before registration can process. Bexar County joins the emissions-required list in 2026. Commercial vehicles still require a full safety inspection.
The county fee is set locally. State law lets a commissioners court impose an optional road and bridge fee up to $10,3Justia. Texas Transportation Code 502.401 – Optional County Fee for Road and Bridge and most counties land between $10 and $11.50. A few have authority to collect more: Bexar and Cameron charge $21.50, and El Paso and Hidalgo charge $20. A handful of small counties charge nothing. Add $200 a Year If You Drive an EV
Fully electric cars and trucks weighing 10,000 pounds or less pay an extra $200 per year on top of the standard registration fees. A new EV receiving a two-year initial registration pays $400 upfront.4Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. First-Time Costs: Buying a Vehicle or Moving to Texas
When you buy a vehicle or receive one by transfer, you also pay a one-time $33 title fee. If the vehicle already carries a current Texas registration, you add a $2.50 transfer fee; if it doesn’t, you pay the full annual registration fee instead.6Tarrant County, Texas. Title Fees and Taxes
The larger charge at titling is the 6.25% motor vehicle sales tax, calculated on the purchase price or the standard presumptive value for private-party sales, whichever is higher. On a $30,000 car, that’s $1,875. The tax is due when you apply for title and is collected by your county tax assessor-collector.7Texas Comptroller. Tax Rates – Motor Vehicle Tax Guide
