How Much Does It Cost to Register an RV in Florida?

The cost to register an RV in Florida usually runs between $300 and $500 in government fees for a first-time registration, plus 6% state sales tax on the purchase price and, in most counties, a small discretionary surtax. The exact figure depends on the type of RV, its weight, and whether you’re bringing it in from out of state. For a $60,000 motor home, sales tax alone adds $3,600 before you get to any of the registration line items.

Annual License Tax by RV Type

Florida sets the yearly license tax by category of recreational vehicle, not by a single flat rate. Travel trailers and fifth-wheels 35 feet or under are $27. Camping trailers are $13.50. Motor homes and truck campers under 4,500 pounds net weight are $27; at 4,500 pounds or more, both jump to $47.25.1Florida Senate. Florida Code 320.08 – License Taxes

Most full-size motor homes clear the 4,500-pound line easily, so $47.25 is the number to plan around. A travel trailer or fifth-wheel is registered separately from the tow vehicle, so the license tax applies to each one independently.

The $225 Initial Registration Fee

The first time you register a motor home or truck camper in Florida, the state charges a one-time $225 fee on top of everything else. It does not apply to travel trailers, fifth-wheel trailers, or camping trailers, and it doesn’t apply to renewals or to a replacement vehicle when you’ve already disposed of the one it replaces.2Florida Senate. Florida Code 320.072 – Additional Fee Imposed on Certain Motor Vehicle Registration Transactions For a motor home buyer, this is typically the second-largest cost after sales tax.

Title Fees

Every RV needs a certificate of title. For an electronic title, which is now the default:

  • Brand-new RV titled from a Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin: $77.25
  • Used RV coming in from another state: $85.25
  • Transfer or duplicate title: $75.25

A printed paper title adds $2.50, and a lien recording adds another $2.50 when you finance.3Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Schedule of Motor Vehicle and Mobile Home Title and Lien Fees

License Plate

A new license plate costs $28. Florida runs plates on a 10-year replacement cycle and spreads $2.80 per year toward the next $28 plate, so you’ll see that small amount folded into each annual renewal.4The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 320.06

If you already have a valid Florida plate on a vehicle you’re getting rid of, you can transfer it to the RV for $4.50 instead of buying a new one. You’ll still owe any difference in license tax if the RV lands in a higher classification.5The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 320.0609 – Transfer and Exchange of Registration License Plates Specialty plates add roughly $15 to $25 a year on top of the standard fees.6Florida Senate. Florida Statutes 320.08056 – Specialty License Plates

Sales Tax and County Surtax

Florida charges 6% sales tax on the purchase price whether you buy from a dealer or a private seller. Private-party sales of motor vehicles are taxable in Florida, and the tax collector will collect the tax when you apply for the title.7Florida Senate. Florida Code 212.05 – Sales, Storage, Use Tax

Most counties add a discretionary surtax of 0.5% to 1.5% on top of the state rate. The surtax applies only to the first $5,000 of the price, which caps the extra at $25 to $75 depending on the county. Some counties charge no surtax at all. The rate that matters is the county where the RV will be registered, not where it was purchased.8Florida Dept. of Revenue. Discretionary Sales Surtax

Buying Out of State

Bring in an RV bought elsewhere and you’ll owe 6% use tax to Florida, with a credit for whatever sales tax you already paid to the other state. Buy in a state with a 4% rate and you owe the remaining 2%. Buy in a state at 6% or above and you owe nothing more.7Florida Senate. Florida Code 212.05 – Sales, Storage, Use Tax Keep the purchase receipt and proof of tax paid; the tax collector will ask for both.

Military and Veteran Waivers

Non-resident service members stationed in Florida can claim an exemption from the $225 initial registration fee by filing the Initial Registration Fee Exemption Affidavit (HSMV Form 82002) at a motor vehicle service center. Active Florida National Guard members get one tax-free license plate registration or renewal each year, though specialty plate fees still apply.9Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Motor Vehicle Registrations

Veterans with a 100% service-connected disability rating who have lived in Florida for the preceding five years qualify for one free license plate, issued along with the validation sticker at no cost. A VA identification card or a letter from the VA or any branch of the Armed Services certifying the rating works as proof.10The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 320.084 – Free Motor Vehicle License Plate to Certain Disabled Veterans

Late Fees

If you miss your renewal, a delinquent fee hits on the 11th calendar day of the month after your renewal was due. The amount scales with your license tax:

  • License tax $5–$25: $5
  • Over $25–$50: $10
  • Over $50–$100: $15
  • Over $100–$400: $50
  • Over $400–$600: $100
  • Over $600: $250

Most RV owners fall in the lower brackets, so the penalty is usually $5 or $10.11The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 320.07 – Expiration of Registration; Renewal Required; Penalties

What to Bring to the Tax Collector

Gathering documents before you go saves a second trip. You’ll need:

  • The original title for a used RV, or the Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin for a new one.
  • Proof of Florida insurance with at least $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection and $10,000 in Property Damage Liability.12Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Florida Insurance Requirements
  • A valid Florida driver’s license or state ID card.
  • A bill of sale or dealer invoice showing the purchase price, which the tax collector uses to compute sales tax. Florida notaries may charge up to $10 per signature.
  • For a used RV titled in another state, a VIN verification on Form HSMV 82042.13Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Vehicle Identification Number and Odometer Verification – Form 82042
  • Application for Certificate of Title, Form HSMV 82040, which starts both the title and registration.

Where to Register

Initial registration has to happen in person at a Florida tax collector’s office or a DHSMV service center. You’ll pay the title fee, the initial registration fee if it applies, the annual license tax, the license plate fee, and sales tax in one visit.

Renewals are easier. You can use the MyDMV portal or the MyFlorida mobile app, and Florida offers a two-year renewal so you don’t have to think about it every year. Online renewals add a small credit card processing fee.14Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Renew or Replace Your Registration

The 10-Day Rule for New Residents

Florida gives you 10 days to register a vehicle after you become employed in the state, enroll children in public school, or establish residency.15Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Motor Vehicle Registrations Miss it and you’re paying the delinquent fee along with everything else. Snowbirds who don’t work in Florida, don’t put kids in school here, and keep their primary residency in another state can generally hold on to their home-state registration.
