The Standard Class D Fee

Endorsements and motorcycle authorization carry their own charges on top of the base license fee:

- Hazardous materials (H), tank (N), passenger (P), or double/triple trailer (T) endorsements added to a CDL: $5 each. Late Fees, Duplicates, and Reinstatement

Reinstatement fees are the real budget-breakers. If your license was suspended or revoked, reinstatement costs $50. How You Pay Changes the Total
WisDOT accepts Visa, MasterCard, and Discover for online and in-person transactions, with American Express also accepted at DMV Customer Service Centers. PayPal works for some online services. Upgrading to REAL ID
Since May 7, 2025, federal rules require a REAL ID-compliant license or another accepted ID such as a passport to board domestic flights or enter certain federal buildings.4Defense Travel Management Office. There is no extra fee to add REAL ID compliance to your renewal. You still pay $42.50. What changes is the paperwork: a first-time REAL ID must be issued in person, and you need to bring proof of your name and date of birth (a certified U.S. birth certificate or valid U.S. passport), proof of citizenship or legal U.S. status, proof of identity, documentation of any name changes, two proofs of Wisconsin residency, and your Social Security number.5State of Wisconsin Department of Transportation. When a Lapsed License Gets Expensive
If your license expired within the last year, you can still renew it and pay only the $5 late fee on top of the $42.50 base.3Wisconsin State Legislature. Wisconsin Statutes 343.21 – License Fees Once the expiration is more than a year old, you cannot renew online and must go in person.
The cliff is at eight years. If you have gone more than eight years without a valid Wisconsin license, WisDOT treats you as a new driver.
