The cost to renew a registration in NY runs from $26 to more than $140 in base fees for a two-year passenger renewal, depending on your vehicle’s weight. Most counties add a use tax of $20 to $80, and residents of the New York City metro area pay another $50 for the MCTD supplemental fee. A typical mid-size sedan around 3,500 pounds pays roughly $56.50 in base fees, and county charges can easily double that.
Base Fee by Vehicle Weight
New York sets the two-year passenger registration fee on a sliding scale tied to your car’s curb weight. The lightest vehicles pay the least; heavier vehicles pay progressively more. A few points on the scale:

County Use Tax
Most New York counties charge a use tax that gets added to your renewal automatically. Outside New York City the common figure is $20 for two years, but some counties are much higher: Nassau charges $80, and Suffolk and Westchester each charge $60 for two years.3NY DMV. If you live in New York City, the vehicle use tax is $80 for two years. You do not need to calculate any of this yourself. The charge appears on the renewal notice the DMV mails you.
MCTD Supplemental Fee
Residents of the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District pay an extra $50 for a two-year registration, set by statute at $25 per year (or portion of a year) that the registration is valid.4New York State Senate. Live outside those twelve counties and this line does not appear on your bill.
Personalized and Specialty Plates

What a Typical Renewal Actually Costs
To put the layers together, here is what a 3,500-pound sedan would pay in three common situations:
- An MCTD county with no use tax, like Orange County: $56.50 base + $50 MCTD = $106.50
- An upstate county outside the MCTD, like Monroe County: $56.50 base + $20 use tax = $76.50
- New York City: $56.50 base + $80 use tax + $50 MCTD = $186.50

How to Find Your Exact Amount
The most reliable number is on the renewal notice (form MV-3 or OP-3) that the DMV mails to your address on file. What Can Stop Your Renewal Even If You Have the Money
Two situations commonly block a renewal that would otherwise go through, and they can add costs you were not planning on.
Outstanding parking and camera judgments are the most common. Your registration can be suspended or deferred if you have three or more unpaid parking, red light, bus lane, or speed camera violation judgments within an 18-month period, or five or more unpaid parking violation judgments within 12 months.
