The cost to renew tags in Arkansas runs $17 to $30 for most passenger cars, based on the vehicle’s empty weight, plus a $2.50 validation decal fee on every renewal. Electric and hybrid owners pay a separate annual surcharge, trucks and motorcycles use different fee schedules, and you’ll owe more if you renew late or haven’t paid your county personal property taxes.
Passenger Car Fees by Weight
Arkansas sets passenger car registration fees using the vehicle’s unladen (empty) weight in three tiers:
- 3,000 pounds or less: $17.00
- 3,001 to 4,500 pounds: $25.00
- 4,501 pounds or more: $30.00
These amounts cover a standard one-year renewal and stay the same year to year unless the legislature changes the schedule.1Justia. Arkansas Code 27-14-601 – Fees for Registration and Licensing of Motor Vehicles – Definitions
Trucks, Vans, and Motorcycles
Trucks and vans used only for personal transportation follow a flat rule. If the manufacturer rates the truck or van at three-quarter ton or less, or if it’s a one-ton truck used exclusively for personal purposes, the annual fee is $21.00 regardless of weight. One-ton trucks used for commercial or business purposes are registered by gross loaded weight, which raises the fee considerably.1Justia. Motorcycles are much cheaper. A standard motorcycle is $6.50 per year, a motor-driven cycle is $3.25, and a sidecar adds $1.95.1Justia. Arkansas Code 27-14-601 – Fees for Registration and Licensing of Motor Vehicles – Definitions
Commercial trucks registered above one ton are classified by gross loaded weight, with fees that climb from $39 at 6,001 pounds into four figures for the heaviest classes. Electric and Hybrid Surcharges
If your vehicle uses electric power, Arkansas adds an annual fee on top of the weight-based registration:
- Fully electric vehicle: $200
- Plug-in hybrid: $100
- Standard hybrid: $50
The surcharges offset the fuel taxes these vehicles pay less of, or none of. A fully electric car weighing under 3,000 pounds, for example, owes $17.00 in base registration plus the $200 EV fee plus the $2.50 decal, for a total of $219.50 before any taxes or penalties.3Justia. Decal, Postage, and Specialty Plate Add-Ons
Every renewal includes the mandatory $2.50 fee for the annual validation decal, collected whether you renew online, by mail, or in person.4Justia. Arkansas Code 27-14-1015 – Payment of Personal Property Taxes and Listing for Assessment Required
Mailing the decal adds $0.50 in postage. When an actual license plate has to be mailed from the Special License Unit in Little Rock, the postage goes up by another $1.00.5Department of Finance and Administration. Motor Vehicle Registration Fee Schedule

Personal Property Tax Must Be Paid First
Arkansas won’t issue a new decal until you show the vehicle has been assessed with the county assessor and that you’ve paid all personal property taxes you owe. This applies to every annual renewal.4Justia. Arkansas Code 27-14-1015 – Payment of Personal Property Taxes and Listing for Assessment Required
The deadline to list your vehicle with the county assessor is May 31. Miss it and a late-assessment penalty of 10% of all taxes due is added, with a $1.00 minimum.7Justia. Arkansas Code 26-26-201 – Delinquent Assessments Personal property taxes owed by the previous October 15 must be paid before the state processes your renewal. Proof is either a receipt from the county tax collector or a payment certification stamped on your assessment papers.8Department of Finance and Administration. Vehicle Tag Renewal
The state database usually verifies your tax status automatically. If it hasn’t updated, bring physical receipts to a Revenue Office.
Late Renewal Penalties
Renew after your tags expire and Arkansas charges $3.00 for every 10-day period, or partial period, you go without registering. The penalty keeps building until it equals the full annual license fee for your vehicle. So for a car with a $25 registration fee, the maximum late penalty is $25. No penalty applies if the owner files an affidavit stating the vehicle wasn’t driven on any road during the lapsed period.9Justia. Arkansas Code 27-14-1004 – Penalties
Driving with expired registration is a misdemeanor. Get pulled over with expired tags and you face both a citation and the accumulated late-registration penalty when you eventually renew.10Arkansas Department of Transportation.
